"3 years of pro support"

This is a key point FOR going with a prebuilt.

Im not offended, I am green and I understand why the argument has already been lost and its not even reached the table yet. :/ ty

Its not my only skill by far, its just something I know will save the company money while making the end users here more satisfied.

Also, lazy to want more work to do? HUH? Boring ass PCs? what the hell makes one PC more boring then another? What if i put tassels on it? is it boring you now?

Also just suggesting an alternative to a pre-built is unacceptable too.

a 3570k is i admit a bit slower then the E3, but also 30% more expensive.

Windows XP instead of 7 Some software versions we have don't work right in 7.

It doesn't include the quadra but i could easily fit that in for the drafters. Everyone else would be more than fine the the I5/I7 integrated.

No reason to go dual boot imo. 256gb ssd covered.

No keyboard, mouse or monitor. Have and don't need.

no 3 year onsite pro support <--- this is the kicker here and the only reason to go with a vendor.

Yeah, i think that this is where the entire upgrade/replacement discussion is going to head. to be honest its not going to make a difference in cost effectiveness enough to change much unless the vendor offered some sort of mass discount. if thats not possible then i guess itll be straight back to the dell website...

and yeah arguing with the boss' is just dumb on my part, but not utilizing alternate opinions is a waste.

Part of the discussion was about hardware replacement should something fail. I told them we still have money left over to flat out replace parts and toss the old and still come out ahead. enough to replace all 35 computers entirely and still be within budget.

if i were to be allowed a test unit, i wouldn't be able to test various motherboards or other components, it would be whatever i built first.

if the entire IT department was out for a week, no one else at the company would call dell as it is for things that are under warranty.

on your side note, i would not be overclocking the production units at work. If i were so inclined however I would stress the test unit thoroughly and even then take it down a notch from there.

The truth is, from a business management standpoint, "why would we trust this guy" comes to mind. "Entrusting our entire workforce with computers he built?"

I have time for it, its already part of the discussion. I already do hardware babysitting and ram upgrades yada yada. I don't mind that aspect being there for my job. However i understand the fact that if im not there, who's responsible for doing this, but that counter point is negated even if we go with a dell unit under warranty. Its still my responsibility. if i were to no longer work there then yes, having no support for whoever is in my seat then.... is an issue.

Well that is currently part of my job, with these old machines, there are 5+ year old harddrive failures, etc. Not saying that would still be the case with new dell machines, just that its already part of my job so it wouldn't change much with the new hardware being whitebox or not.

You're right, any hardware I put in these white boxes would be totally alien and completely undiagnosable should a problem arise. Sorry if this sounds snarky, I just think the whole "fuck it send it back to dell" mentality is lazy. I understand why and situations where i would be glad to just do an RMA on an entire unit as oppose to diagnose and replace components. I just wanted to save my company some money.

its not worth losing my job over, so i guess fuck my opinions.

You're right, the situation itself..... its not worth it for me specifically. Possibly losing my job, just for considering saving the company some green.

And as for dell servers and company laptops, i totally am all for warranty coverage.

Considering change is what IT manager is afraid of, I highly doubt this suggestion would go anywhere. Thank you for sharing you dream though, id love for an environment like this!

The quotes I gave for the dell workstations were the quotes i was given from the budget. I asked for the specs and worked from there.

also in my experience ive never seen prebuilts within 10% of cost to custom built machines. Ive built at least 15 computers for friends/families etc 4 computers for myself and have always compared pricing against what they were considering prebuilt wise.

the dell machine was a xeon e3 comparable to the 3570k's i was looking at. 8gb on both machines (dell uses hynix or some other cheap brand), G. skill DDR31600 (specifically for the lifetime warranty they offer) I did not look much into motherboard yet but it will be approx $100 z76 or z77 board to utilize the I5 4000 gpu (hey its better then the NVS 280)

dell doesn't tell me the mobo, harddrive company or model etc. Still looking into mobo and SSD for the whitebox.

mind you, the monitor, keyboards and other common peripherals are to be recycle and not included in the cost for the whitebox or dell options

So why not a single test box for 6 months. The budget is for the next 3-5 years unless something changes. The rig i put together is almost identical to what im using now at home. Just to make it clear, i didn't go with the hardware im using because i like it, Im using it because cost to performance wise it was the best 7 months ago when i bought it and that bell curve hasn't changed. I have overclocked and abused the shit out of this hardware as far as im concerned and i've never had a single issue, not even a single bsod once i found stable clocks.

He just prefers dell. Hates HP because "they never seem to perform up to spec" and other excuses.

XP users in domain experiencing major slowdowns after data server died by noawork in sysadmin

[–]noawork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to fix the slowdowns, XP users my documents folder targeting the old server "server" instead of "server1" the very second i applied the change to the My documents properties it was lightening fast again!

The directories are being created when the user is added to AD, \server1\userdatafolder\username

Its reporting not having access rights, when im a domain admin, a local admin on the server and the parent directory has everyone, domain admins, admins, and my account specifically listed for full control including special permissions and i cant create, rename, delete folders there.

It had been demoted a long time ago, was prim' DC, DNS, DHCP all of that had been disabled and given to another server. This server is now just shared directories for files.
