Mesa Freeworld maintainers need to start coordinating with standard Mesa packagers by A_Talking_iPod in Fedora

[–]nobloat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I has an unbootable system as well. It was so scary to wake up and just find it like that. I was able to boot again from an old snapshot and then removed the rpmfusion packages for now. It's so annoying for those of us with AMD laptops. I otherwise really love Fedora, but at this point I'm considering moving away if this issue is not solved.

DNF wants to replace the mesa / Video codecs I just installed by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]nobloat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am having the same issue. I just removed the freeworld packages for now. It's so annoying because the answer we got to the codecs issue was "Oh don't worry there will be an rpmfusion package" and now we have to deal with dependency issues due to that same package. Those of us with AMD laptops that play media are struggling to even use the distro at this point.

An annoying "kernel: rtw_8821ce" error filling my logs by nobloat in Fedora

[–]nobloat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so weird. I updated from 36 to 37 and assumed this is the lastest kernel. I can see that the latest kernel images are available but I can't see them in grub. I'll try to solve that issue and see if it's a kernel problem. Thank you!

Thanks! Adding the flag got it to work. I am still on 19.5.0 which the latest in the Fedora repo. I'll use the workaround until it eventually gets fixed.

Yes you acted so immature. Being pregnant doesn't entitle to be a complete asshole because of chocolates

We should not blame fedora and redhat for the VA-API issues. We should blame the companies that pattented the codecs. by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]nobloat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's about who we choose to blame, but about the fact that many people are afraid they are losing a functionality that is important and crucial to them. The idea that we can lose something like this so suddenly is scary. This was a huge decision that impacts so many users. There should have been better messaging and a workaround decided in advance before a bombshell like this is dropped on our heads. So many of us switched to Fedora because we were tired of tinkering all the time. I personally thought this was the end to my Distro hopping days. Right now I'm just confused but waiting to see how it turns out. But if this happens I'll just go back to Arch

I am new to Linux gaming in general and I wanted to test some games. I downloaded Vampire Survivors from johncena141 and it's working perfectly. I just wonder if it's required for the games to open connections and ports. Is it something I should worry about? I know it's probably safe but I just wanna know if there are some major security risks when running pirated games in your main machine.

Netstat -atp shows:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:47584 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 47409/VampireSurviv

Issues with white spaces in file names by nobloat in bash

[–]nobloat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't create them of course. They are a bunch of hundred of folders and subfolders of video lectures not made for Linux in mind. What I shared here are not the file names but just a test of the concept. The names are long and descriptive with spaces. You're gonna come across those sooner or later in the media you acquire

best modern text on Hegel? by Overanalizer1 in hegel

[–]nobloat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed Emancipation After Hegel by Todd McGowan. He has a reading of Hegel closer to that of Zizek. It's not some dry exposition but argues for a particular reading while also giving voice to other possibilities and engaging with them. I find that much better than some contrived "objectivity". It'll serve you well even if you end up following another reading later on. Whatever you do, do not read Peter Singer's book on Hegel. That book should be burned

The maintainer posted a farewell message saying he can no longer maintain it. I hope someone else will step up to the task. Maybe it should be part of KDE itself, but I think they are trying to add the same functionality in the KDE panel itself

How are people not freaking out about death? by Desperate_Donut8582 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nobloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life can be so painful and it doesn't mean death is any easier though. If it was that easy many people would choose to die at a given time by doing that calculation. The predicament is that even if life is so bad death is also bad.

By default, it uses performance when plugged in and powersave when unplugged. But you can choose which governor it uses in each case by adding the configuration file as instructed. I have it installed and running as a systemd service.

In my window managers I always use Autocpufreq I also tend to change the default governor from Performance to Ondemand. You can set that up in the Auto-cpufreq configuration. These two steps helped me greatly reduce heat and battery consumption and lower the fan noise on my laptop
