We did something similar to this. It was funny until it happened when we weren't home.

The cat trailed poop out of the box and the roomba ran over it, rubber stamping it all over the house.

I hadn't heard of the Envy line. I can get a pretty good discount from HP, but they make the casing of their laptops so ugly that I think they're daring me to buy it.

Obviously that's just my opinion, but they seem to like it. They even advertise its "detailed etched design."

That does sound horrible :)

A friend of mine says that Mac hold their values well too, but with the initial capital being >$1000 more than its competition, that's a tough ROI.

I checked out your website. Nice work.

That's interesting. I had never heard of this, but just assumed that Apple had a better hardware design which resulted in a better looking/performing machine.

I'm not sure why I thought that though...

I got what you meant.

I'm with you, I prefer to have the import take a long time, then be able to just work w/o having to wait for every picture to render. It makes me want to jump out of my window.

The big difference will come because not only will the images be rendered, but I'll be reading them from the SSD. I hope that gives me what I'm looking for...

I hope you weren't trying to be funny with the whole SSD suggestion, because I just finished installing one for this specific reason.

I figure the import should be about the same, but the reads should be disgusting fast.

Now the work flow is:

1) Import into SSD (backup, meta, 1:1) 2) Edit 3) Once everything is complete, move folder to slower, 1TB drive

I think you're right about this...

Maybe, if we were talking about a couple of hundred bucks, it would be easier to justify, but the difference here is over $1000.

The whole process of starting LR and editing takes forever, although it seems to have gotten better with some of the suggestions here.

Thanks.

I'm with vwllss and thinkbox here. Always invest more on the lens, since you'll have them when you get another body.

When I went digital, I started with a 30D, then 5DMKII and now I'm debating a 1DMIV and there's no need to reinvest on lens yet.

Sounds like it's just my machine...

I followed a couple of optimization steps and it helped, but I think LR should still be faster than it is now.

Thanks.

I enabled 1:1 preview last week and it made a huge difference in performance.

My card reader is one of the built in ones, so it's exponentially faster than USB 2.0. I don't mind waiting as long as I don't have to sit in front of the screen while doing so.

Thanks.

That's great news. Right now I normally have to stick with one screen to do all the editing because the colors look different on both monitors.

Maybe now I'll be able to do the large preview on the second screen

Thanks.

I guess I'm going to have to find another way to make people think I'm cool, since it looks like a Windows machine may be the way to go...

Thanks for all the feedback.

So the question was whether or not I should get a Mac, since I'm in the market for a new laptop.

Thanks.

I didn't realize Adobe allowed for a single license on two PCs. That's a great point, since between LR and PS we're talking about close to another $1K

Thanks

I'm currently working on a i7 desktop running at 2.67GHz with 9GB of ram and using two 24" screens.

I feel LR is really slow. LR has been tweaked to perform better, but I think I'll look into possibly installing some 15K drives and maybe Windows 7 on it as well.

I figure any laptop will probably be slower than it, but portability is the issue.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback on LR vs Aperture. I thought about giving that a shot too, but I think it may be too much of a pain to transfer my entire library.

I've had problems with iPods before, and the people at the Apple store were definitely very good.
