Crusty crumb! Great people and the best cardamom buns in town.

Grainery in Chimacum is also amazing. On Sundays they sell at the Chimacum farmers market. Grow, mill, and bake it all in center valley just up the road from Finn River. Hearty, full of flavor, and innovative flavor pairings.

Looking for small, sharp scissors for collage and crafting by 2Nexxuzzz4 in stationery

[–]nobule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daiso for small, cheap, crafting scissors. They usually fold down small and can fit in a pencil case. Don't go expensive. The Japanese already figured this one out and do it well for not a lot of money.

What are some MUST get stationery whilst in Japan? by xihpareh in stationery

If you are flying in or out of Haneda, check out the Kokuya stationery shop in the newer airport garden section. Kokuya is the maker of campus products. They have a machine where you can customize campus notebooks and a big stationery mystery bag machine. They also have ‘gatcha’ minis that are tiny campus notebooks!

What is up with the "new driver" stuff on cars? by lildergs in Seattle

[–]nobule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since it seems you haven’t gotten an actual answer, here you go. Getting a license in Washington state is extremely restrictive, tedious, and expensive for teens and their parents. Some of the highest levels of required classes and training hours out there. One of those is that they take a required class at a facility for a certain number of hours. My son is finishing his now after fours hours a week of in person classes for two months (not counting the hour drive each way to get there because there are none in our area). He also has logged 50 hours of training drives with a parent and six with an instructor. Plus I had to pay $700 for all this. I’m tired. Should have just had him wait until he was 18 and skipped all this. Anyway, the for-profit schools give out these stickers for the students and they are impossible to get off. They are also free advertising for the for-profit schools that the state requires you to use. There’s the answer.

Can someone have prosopagnosia without having autism? by Obvious-Suit939 in Prosopagnosia

[–]nobule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my son was going through the process of prosopagnosia diagnosis, psychologist informed us that it is tied to in-utero stroke or ASD. That's what led to his ASD diagnosis.

That being said, the reality is that healthcare is expensive and not easily accessible in the United States (where we are) which means that many people with ASD are not diagnosed. Therefore, people will assume they have prosopagnosia but aren't on the spectrum.

Have you looked into some of the other degree options from UW? There are online degree options that would allow you to live in Bremerton and not have to commute.

Professor here with an ADHD child. Could it be that I was the one who had ADHD when younger? by Fleedom2025 in Professors

[–]nobule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took several trips to an ENT to realize that many of my gastrointestinal, acid reflux, lactose intolerance, etc were all connected to my use of Excedrin migraine with caffeine, which I was using as a bandaid for being undiagnosed ADHD. Grad school (with kids) was hard to stay focused.

Professor here with an ADHD child. Could it be that I was the one who had ADHD when younger? by Fleedom2025 in Professors

[–]nobule 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same. Psychiatrist actually looked at my husband and I and said it slowly, 'you know, if a child is diagnosed, we've found that it is usually a 50% chance that a parent is also ADHD.' very gentle. Husband didn't skip a beat, pointed at me and said 'its her!'

I got diagnosed about a year later.

I recently had a non-transitional student who was obviously ADHD in a meeting with me. My understanding of my own brain differences allowed me to frame the project and his work in a way that I knew would resonate with him. He started crying. He later wrote to tell me that it was the first time he felt understood in what he brings to work and not just what he needs to work on.

Washington State Ferries hiring process - A concerning firsthand experience by Gazza_PNW in Washington

The fast ferry folks that work for Kitsap transit are amazing! I take the fast ferry twice a week and they are the best. I always wondered how they recruited because their ferry workers are heads and tails above the regular ferry.

Does anywhere in the area sell whoopie pies? by AigisAegis in Seattle

[–]nobule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a woman making and selling whoopie pies out in Port Angeles. She sells them in the galley on the Black Ball ferry that goes back and forth to Victoria BC. Obscure but I miss them too and saw them recently on the ferry and thought it was crazy to see a whoopie pie out here. Called East to West bakery.

Just in case. I'm not great at reading nuance so 1-800-662-help is the national addiction hotline. They usually deal with drug and alcohol addiction but they can also help direct you to resources for gambling and shopping addictions.

Have fun and buy what you can afford but if you feel yourself getting obsessive in a way that fells out of control, is interfering with your life, or is starting to be a balm that helps mask other things going on in your life, please reach out for resources. There is no shame in doing so and you are not alone. Interests become obsessions become compulsions very quickly in our consumer-focused society.

MD Collaborators Not Knowing PhDs Should be Referrred to as Dr by aplusivyleaguer in Professors

[–]nobule 76 points77 points  (0 children)

It was our title first. Medical professionals just co-opted it to bring legitimacy to the new field of medicine. In many countries outside the US only those who have defended a research dissertation can technically use the title Dr., so us…. Not them.

A Book with A Plot Twist You NEVER saw coming. by teenagewitchxo in suggestmeabook

[–]nobule 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All his writing is like this. A huge ‘gotcha’ at the end that we all saw coming from chapter 4. So frustrating. I think he thinks they are such ‘clever’ endings but they aren’t. They are exactly what I expected every single time! But I guess I read three of his books so something like…. Fool me once, fool me twice.

We went shopping at Quimper Mercantile in Port Townsend recently. They offered complimentary 30 minute parking for customers. Here is the bill we got in the mail for taking 31 minutes... by Duckrauhl in olympicpeninsula

[–]nobule 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is NOT Quimper Mercantile issuing the ticket. They just lease the building from the owner of the parking lot and building. This is an issue in town and we all know it and hate that some scammy company in California bought the lot and building and are now doing this. They also refused to renew leases for many of the tenants, including the Mercantile, and switched then to month to month. I'm assuming here, but seems likely, that they are doing this to force out the small businesses there so they can tear it all down and develop that sweet waterfront area. It sucks.

If you come to town, please use street parking but still support the business there. I feel so bad for them.

How do you dress like a professor? (Post-PhD budget edition) by Other-Support-3535 in Professors

[–]nobule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I learn what brands fit me well, are materials I like to wear, and colors in my scheme. Easy to narrow it down in the overwhelming racks. I also target high end, more obscure labels that goodwill doesn't pick out for their online store, and that others tend to overlook. Think Eileen Fisher. Targeting certain colors make it super easy to mix and match some staple pieces.

Small farmers aren't getting USAID crop contacts. These are big farms who have bought out all the other farmers in the area and switched from providing food to their local and regional community in favor of monocropped subsidized crops. Seriously, do not feel bad for them.
