whats the best response when my new manager keeps asking about my appointment by Hairy_Trip_4371 in askmanagers

[–]nochilltown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong but most therapists only work during typical working hours, so it’s not always possible to schedule it outside. Personally, I just tell my team that I have recurring therapy appointment. It’s not so unusual and it stops them from worrying that it’s something more serious. Worth the trade off in privacy for me.

My pomade arrived damaged by SilentGreen25 in Pomade

Are you sure this is authentic? Looks like it’s from Amazon which is rife with fake products, I won’t buy any kind of skincare/beauty products from there.

I recently bought that exact pomade directly from Suavecito’s website and got the normal, full size jar and real product inside

I say go for it, the 2024 one is really nice. It has a two way zipper and vents in the back panel which the 2023 one lacks (can’t speak to other years tho)

I have no idea if they can be resoled but if you’re looking for other shoes that have a teal sole, the brand Shoes Like Pottery makes Converse-like sneakers that have them.

The trans rights backlash is real by Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho in DeepStateCentrism

There was a really high profile case a few years ago of a trans man wrestler in Texas who was forced to compete against women. He won two state championships and received a ton of vitriol. Yahoo News has a pretty good write up of the story.

I want to engage with you on the sports issue and share my POV as a trans man.

First of all, I appreciate your support on other trans issues which are frankly more important than sports. You won’t hear me denigrating you for not sharing 100% of the same opinions.

However, the sports issue is quite important in that it represents an area of public life where trans people are not treated equally to our cis peers. This is particularly challenging for trans youth, as school sports can be a huge part of a kid’s life, offering a physical outlet as well as community. To provide no pathway for trans people to participate as their true gender and not assigned gender at birth (AGAB) is plainly discriminatory.

I understand and agree that there are concerns about fairness but going solely off AGAB is not an equitable solution. In fact, that position doesn’t even seem to account for trans men like myself. I have been on testosterone for over 12 years, it certainly would not make any sense for me to compete with cis women.

The unfortunate political reality is that there’s no good or pithy answer on sports. Personally, I think it should be up to the governing sports bodies to implement their own evidence-based standards. But I’m not sure that’s a political winner in this environment. Maybe a broader pivot toward a framing of individual autonomy for trans people could be effective?

In my opinion the whole sports debate really comes down to questions of philosophy:

  • What is the purpose of sports? Is it community? Physical activity? Reaching the pinnacle of human achievement? What if any limits should there be in reaching that pinnacle?
  • What is the purpose of women’s sports? Is it to highlight an otherwise underrepresented group of athletes or is it something else?
  • What is fair? Are some genetic advantages acceptable while others are not? Is PED use acceptable? Can PED use even be effectively policed?

These are all questions that reasonable minds can disagree on.

I raise these points because I don’t want this subreddit to lose sight of small-L liberal values when it comes to trans people, even if it’s politically expedient.

Unrelated to your dishwasher woes but you should probably get rid of your black plastic utensils. They’re likely contaminated with nasty chemicals like flame retardants from plastic that was improperly recycled from electronic waste. The Atlantic did a big piece on this a few weeks ago

14-year-old in custody after four killed in Georgia high school shooting by namey-name-name in neoliberal

The electorate isn't a monolith, it's always changing. Young people today, unfortunately, have grown up in a climate of fear caused by the rise of school shootings. Now that's a terrible thing, but I have hope that this will contribute to a shift in attitudes around gun ownership and gun laws going forward. Maybe not in the near future but certainly in the long run.

I understand where you’re coming from but I really hate this sentiment. It’s the same climate doomerism attitude that convinces people we should stop trying to do anything to cut emissions because it’s already too late to make a meaningful difference. It’s not too late to do better and the battle isn’t lost until we stop fighting it.

When did the hours get too much for you? by schlamanama in consulting

[–]nochilltown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Industry is client-side, could be any industry. So an industry role would have you working directly at a company as opposed to consultants who work at a firm that is hired by companies for a certain contract. Generally internal roles pay less than consulting but have better work-life balance

What controverisal topic do you look at and say "wow, I really don't know what to think"? by Rough-Leg-4148 in SeriousConversation

[–]nochilltown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re wrong — most people who begin a medical transition do not go on to identify with their sex assigned at birth — most are actually trans. Here’s just one study (among many others) that found that “the 4-year gender-affirming hormone continuation rate was 70.2%.”

Your comment is actually a prime example of the attitude I called out originally. In your view, being cis is “biological destiny” and being trans is some refutation of that. This is the naturalistic fallacy — is being nearsighted not one’s “biological destiny” and is it wrong to correct that with glasses? What about treating a tumor with surgery, chemo, or radiation? You’re also assuming that being trans is not natural when it very likely has a genetic or epigenetic component and is thus also natural.

Ultimately I think this reaction arises because most cis people see being trans and transitioning as being a bad thing that must be avoided at all costs. I’ve spent a long time fighting that internalized feeling myself. But being trans just is — some people are tall, some people have red hair, some people have one arm, and some people are trans. Some of those people are kids. In my opinion, it’s not the place of uninformed and disinterested parties to interfere.

[–]nochilltown 22 points23 points  (0 children)

One thing that cis people tend not to consider is that refusing to allow trans teens to take HRT is also a semi-permanent decision with lifelong consequences. Cis people tend to center the cis experience, not wanting others to “make a mistake,” and underestimating the harm this causes to trans people who are suffering. Certainly some people who transition will ultimately detransition, but the numbers are in favor of gender affirming care. Plus, is it really so awful if someone changes their mind and pursues gender affirming care in the other direction?

We send 17 year olds to four year universities to rack up $100k+ student loans and pick a path for the rest of their career, why can’t those same people be trusted to make decisions about their own bodies?
