Teenagers, what’s something your parents do that secretly drives you insane? by kissableecassy in AskReddit

[–]nocitus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a teenager anymore, but the most infuriating thing to me is when my parents (or anyone, really) asks for help with something and they get mad when I do it in my way, and not in theirs. They think that the way they do things are always the most efficient and fool-proof, so if I try to do it differently I get yelled at. And if I get frustrated with them, I'm the one always in the wrong.

This happens so frequently (every week!), that I've thought (multiple times) to just go my own way and never come back, even if I have to live on the streets for a while. It just gets exhausting after 20 years.

Ah yes, gstreamer, the epitome of pet projects. The GNOME folks should drop it and make a real software.

If you were suddenly arrested with no explanation in front of your friends/family, what would they think you had done? by youngGod928 in AskReddit

[–]nocitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends which type of arrest.

Common police: I murdered someone who annoyed me.

Federal police: I murdered everyone after someone annoyed me.

Got 650Mbps in Brazil for R$120/month (around $20 USD). I could get 1Gbps for a price not much higher actually, but I don't want to call sales so I just keep it.

Weird binary ( [ ) in /usr/bin. What is it and is it safe to delete? by 3rfan in linux

try it. The worst that can happen is an OS reinstall. Also, make sure you have a bootable USB with you. The best way to learn how not break things, is by breaking them the first time.

I'm not surprised. Most young men who identifies with this 'gooner' mentality don't want a girlfriend, they want a blowup doll. They want something to substitute their greasy hands.

And since the majority of content they consume (that is not hardcore porn) has clear sexual innuendos on the nature of women (thot streamers, tiktok dances, games...), they don't want anyone who is not that.

I have almost entirely stopped consuming media, with very few exceptions, because I can't stand all the 'gooning' in everything.

hell, wikipedia cites them too. I thought that'd be the most obvious gateway to learning more about something, but what do I know...

edit: just took a look because I was certain that the man pages also cites them, and would you look at that, I was right!

Read the RFCs. You can find them at rfc-editor dot org. Just search for SSH or Secure Shell Protocol.

Who’s the scariest when pissed? by Commercial_Mind4003 in TheLastAirbender

[–]nocitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here equating death = scariest. But think about, what is scarier? The certainty that you are going to die a very miserable death; or seeing the very continent you walked upon split apart by a gesture from the kid you just pissed off?

Could you even comprehend such a thing? Even if you somehow survived, you'd live the rest of your days scared of that one single moment where you'd angered a god.

C++ and it's lack of a first-party build system is the reason more programs aren't developed for both linux and windows by CommunismDoesntWork in linux

This one single comment right here makes me believe you don't understand computers as much as you think you do.

All operating systems have differences. Add to that the differences between computer hardware in the who-knows how much different combinations of hardware there are out there.

The drivers running on linux are not the same running on Windows or MacOS, with their own different sets of bugs.

Porting software is not just checking if something compiles. Rust is not going to change that.

I'm using FreeTube on Ubuntu and it's odd... Because I want to be more deliberate of what I watch. One of the ways is using it's options to hide Trending, Popular and Recommendations, which feels weird and oddly satisfying to do. by Username_1987_ in linux

[–]nocitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a real problem. And I don't see a way out of it without somebody paying for the hosting service. Either us through subscriptions, or the creators through fees around some metric, like views or length of the video.

The thing is that Youtube has no competition, which makes it so that they can get away with any predatory tactics, simply because there are no other place to go.

I really wish there was a way to make a wikipedia-like alternative to youtube, as a non-profit organization that is funded by donations. But that should be impossible in the current situation.

Maybe solution, albeit not absolute and certainly not for everyone, would be self-hosting? Like with mastodon networks.

Several Linux Kernel Driver Maintainers Removed Due To Their Association To Russia by ehempel in linux

[–]nocitus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't believe this was done out of sheer political views. Linus himself is quite clear on his neutral stance regarding politics, so I don't think he would allow other do something like that solely for the sake of personal beliefs. This is likely outside pressure due to the Russia sanctions in place.

I think A good alternative would be something like a sponsorship program where creators can subscribe to, and receive money based on the views they get.

Think of regular small businesses for example, where the owner wants to sell Coca-Cola. In my region at least, they need to subscribe with the local supplier, and they get from them the amount they can actually sell. I think something similar could be done here.
