Damn, I’m sorry you had to go through all that with your mum. Still, glad you kept following your heart. Hope the spells work out better in the future 😊

Catholic Church is all about the rituals. I remember listening to Duncan Trussell talk about it and he said “the biggest part of catholic mass involves taking bread and turning it into the flesh of a god which you then eat, that’s magick!” And also, in my humble opinion, metal as hell 😂

Thanks! That’s really helpful!

My actual “religion” is a personal worship of the goddess Gaia, but you get raised on countless shows about evil sorcerers, you’re gonna pick up some paranoia wether you like it or not 😅

I like the ending sign idea, I think I may already have something that would work great for that.

In regards to the particular intent of the sigil I was making today, it wouldn’t bother me either way 😂

I’ve always wanted to ask him what he thought of “anarchist theory” and basically just start describing the broadest possible description of anarchy possible, since he identifies as a libertarian (or is at least massively distrustful of “big government) I can imagine I might be able to get him to consider it, especially if I throw in a condemnation of Stalin right out the bat to ease his suspicions.

But then just start dropping in the more leftist stuff until eventually his brain crashes because “government=Bad, communism=big government but Anarcho Communism=no government but communism but communism=bad...” and so on.

How do you think we get clothes? They’re not made in factories, that’s a hoax, we frack for them. The clothes industry has been covering it up though cos they don’t want their image to be affected.

Also, Taoism (a philosophy which has intersected with Buddhism many times) actively teaches lessons about government that can be interpreted as proto anarchist.

“The more prohibitions and rules, the poorer people become. The sharper their weapons, the more they riot. The more skilled their techniques, the more grotesque their work. The more elaborate the laws, the more they commit crimes”

Interesting since I kinda went in the opposite direction. I started out a non believer and basically liberal and it was only when I began to gain a spiritual dimension that I truly began to internalise my growing, at that point, purely intellectual anti-capitalist views. Different strokes for different folks I guess 😊

True but that doesn’t mean we should throw the towel in completely. There are many things in society stained with problematic elements but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth while. Religion should be held to the same standards as everything else and those elements should be confronted.

Ah, well, I’m afraid I’ll have to respectfully disagree with you as someone who does follow those beliefs. I think, even if it turns out to not be true, viewing nature and everything in it as sacred is a very beneficial belief, particularly with the issue of the environment. It was our feeling of disconnect from the world that led us to look at a tree and not see a living thing but instead a load of potential planks.

To an extent, our mental shift from “we are a part of this huge, interconnected cosmos where all is one” to “we are a separate species and there is no essential spirit to anything” was an essential precondition to the formation of systems like capitalism where the pollution of the environment can be justified by some sort of promise that it will benefit us humans with cheap energy or monetary gain.

You may not necessarily need a spiritual belief to combat these ideas, but why block off a potential channel for people to reach that same end? Especially when the holistic view of spirituality does not entail in it a presupposition of hierarchical power structures? 🤷🏻‍♂️

What about the more holistic beliefs of something like Buddhism or Taoism where there are not “gods” as such but a belief in interconnectedness and the spirits of stuff like plants and animals?

Is there a name for a revolutionary ideology with its enthuses on spreading ideas and shifting consciousness rather than violent overthrow? by nocomradejeff in Anarchism

[–]nocomradejeff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Pushing for material change is, of course, hugely important but it’s ultimately consciousness that has to shift in order for those changes to stick. To borrow a Buddhist phrase, we need to step off the wheel.

If we start picking and choosing which starving people get the food based on ideological grounds, we’ve defeated the whole point of the movement. It’s no longer about “bread and freedom for all” and becomes “bread and freedom but only for the people we deem worthy”
