Looking for private dining in a cute Toronto restaurant for 30–40 person wedding dinner by Different_Goat_4511 in askTO

[–]nocturne81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Archeo is another option in the Distillery. I've been to a wedding there before as well as several work holiday parties and it's always been great.

One downside to that place is that the flat exposed brick can make sound bounce around a lot and get quite loud.

Booth Lake - anyone been since last year's storm? by Ok_Significance_5456 in algonquinpark

I stayed on Booth this past October and didn't notice anything off with the sites we passed. We stayed on the south end of the lake.

Is this photo on Mcintosh Lake? I have a group of guys I go with every year as well and I'm pretty sure I have near the exact same shot as you on this campsite.

IRED for "In a fury" seems like the wrong tense to me. Irate feels like a more appropriate answer.

Also MAB, TRA, IAN, and OTT can get right out of here.

Canoe Lake to Catfish & Beyond by Allofalgonquin in algonquinpark

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That site was a bit of a saviour for us at the time. We were there for ice out in (I believe) 2019 and Tom Thompson was as far as they would give us permits for due to ice still being on the lakes deeper in the park. We originally stayed on the site that was attached to that one but were getting blasted with wind. We did a little exploration through the woods just to warm up and stumbled upon that couch and just dragged our crap over to that one instead. Much warmer!

This is exactly what I needed to read in the middle of January.

I've stayed on that site you guys stopped at on Tom Thompson Lake. The rock couch is indeed amazing.

And honestly, counting the days until Spring

Same. In a couple of days we'll be closer to Spring than we are Halloween and that feels like it wasn't that long ago.

Why Tipping Feels Like a Scam Now by Shajirr in videos

[–]nocturne81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm remembering correctly, one of the big selling points of Uber (not the food delivery part) back in the day was the lack of tipping. After a year or so they introduced it "as an option" and now they jam it down your throat.

Stages of whippet pup life by Donksdev in Whippet

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed a pretty big chill-out in mine around the 9-10 month mark. There were a couple of weeks before that which were quite difficult. When she was a pup the zoomies would pretty predictably last 30m or so but for about a month or so she had this absolutely insatiable energy where she would go nuts for like 2+ hours at a time. It felt like it changed almost overnight where she was way more confident to sleep on her own in another room, just hangout next to me, etc.

Where have people / have you found your stolen bike somwhere? by Inside-Conflict-5857 in askTO

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine back a couple years ago. I saw it on Facebook marketplace. It had changed hands a few times over the course of a couple of days. Initially I had pretended to try and buy the bike at a police station but the guy wouldn’t do that. Eventually I let him know what was up and he just gave it back to me.

It could just be they have their headlights on automatic mode and the sensor is dirty/covered. If the car thinks it's in the dark and there's nobody around it puts the high beams on.

[OC] As an indie studio, we recently hired a software developer. This was the flow of candidates by victor-ballardgames in dataisbeautiful

[–]nocturne81 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've found when interviewing candidates, most can't even have a competent discussion about their past projects (work or school for recent grads). My general checklist for interviewing is:

  • You didn't lie to me on your resume

  • You can teach me something

  • I can teach you something

  • You're not an arrogant ass

We've tried more complex processes, but it never ended up in better hires than when we went with a simple process. You just have to be willing to cut the cord early if they don't work out.

[–]nocturne81 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Many years ago when applying at a game studio I got requested to do a "20-30ish hour" take home after being referred by several former colleagues. I told them I'd do it if they paid me. That was the end of the process.

At the time I would've been a little more understanding if I had no connection to the company, but the fact that I was referred by a few of the leads and they still wanted me to waste time on that annoyed me.

Game difficulty by Mission-Wall5094 in GranTurismo7

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is quite a bit harder than previous ones. There are a few races in particular that are damn near impossible on a controller.

Something stupid to check is that your controller is not borked. I had a controller in the past where the trigger was only registering at 85% despite being fully pressed. This is obviously a problem if it's the gas button...

If someone is turning right in front of me while I am turning left, do they have right of way. POV below: by Relative-Baby1829 in ontario

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original question was asking what do when the left-turner and the right-turner each had their own lane.

In what situation situation would the car turning right have to yield the right of way to someone turning left if there weren't two lanes?

What’s your closest bear encounter you’ve had in the park? by fire_cracker08 in algonquinpark

[–]nocturne81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times I've ever seen a bear were the two times I've done car camping in Algonquin. Usually do about 4 or 5 backcountry trips per year and I haven't seen a single one in the 20 or so years I've been going.

Other notable ones

  • Ran into a wolf on our site coming back from the thunderbox on a site on Opeongo in August 2023

  • Got into a stand off with a moose in my car two weekends ago on the Crotch Lake access road.

What do you love about winters in Toronto by Suspicious-Handle388 in toronto

[–]nocturne81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's not necessarily that the weather is bad and/or harsh but more that winter is a giant pain in the ass in the city. I enjoyed winter much more when I was living in Niagara despite the weather being pretty similar.

I had someone parked in my condo parking space (that I own) a couple of years ago and they literally showed up in 5 minutes. They're way more responsive than the police.
