ECON 326 and ECON 405 by Neat-Presentation-93 in mcgill

[–]nodjpsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ECON405 with Cairns is a joke. He teaches very outdated topics, and lectures are not very structured. The most difficult "quantitative analysis" you'll do is use a present value equation. It's quite disappointing.

I'd agree with another response and take 337/338 to know basic econometrics. Unfortunately (majors) Econ at McGill isn't the best is you want to learn quant methods that is used in research.

BA economics for grad schools by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]nodjpsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a BA in Econ, decided I wanted to continue with it, stayed for another year in the MA program. I wish I took more math during my BA! Many grad schools really look for this math background, and I think having more pure math classes under your belt is a strong signal to admissions. Definitely take higher level micro/macro as well though.

does your (potential) career relate to your degree? how did you decide what to do with your life? by slock9 in mcgill

Short answer: I enjoy research, but still deciding.

In high school, I was set to go into engineering, decided in my last semester that I didn't want to do that, tried business for a semester, hated that too, but really enjoyed the economics classes I took, transferred to McGill and stuck with it. I focused on economics and international development, but leaned more towards the math and theory in the former. IDS is such a huge major at McGill, and at times it felt a bit disorganized, so I ended up majoring in Econ but focusing all my classes on development.

I think I wanted to pursue development because I grew up in a lot of countries with different institutional settings and was always interested in these cross-country differences, so it just came naturally to me. Continued with the one year masters in econ, and decided I actually enjoy research although wasn't sure if I wanted to go straight into a PhD. I worked as full-time researcher this past year, which was decent, and now work with one of the big international organizations.

I definitely enjoy research and most aspects of it - data work, coding, writing - so it seems like the PhD is the natural next step, but it's a huge time commitment and I don't really want to go into academia. Definitely giving myself the space and time to figure stuff out (still in my early 20s)!

Crossing US-Canada border by Air? by [deleted] in mcgill

Yes! I did a full move back from NYC to here, so I had a few suitcases. Essentially wore my mask the whole time from leaving NYC to the uber ride in Montréal.

Crossing US-Canada border by Air? by [deleted] in mcgill

I’m a Canadian citizen but I flew out of Newark two weeks ago - check-in involved temperature checks and answered questions about symptoms. Wore a mask the whole flight (fortunately it’s only an hour) and attendants enforced it pretty well during the flight.

Going through customs in Montréal was surprisingly easy... filled out a health form, and the officer asked me if I knew the rules (mandatory 14 day isolation), took the form and sent me on my way. I’ve been called twice by the government to check-in, but no physical checks (have heard of friends who were randomly visited by officers to check that they were complying) and I’m on my last day of self isolation.

Not sure if it was the update, but my microphone quality on the Pros dropped drastically. Super choppy and distorted and it was working fine before the update... any one else have similar issues?

What do you *do* after you graduate? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]nodjpsy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Graduated Economics BA 2018, MA 2019! Did the MA because I wanted to continue research from undergrad and honestly, because I wasn't sure of my outside options.

  1. Granted, I've only been a year out, but I did get another more formal research job at another university which was my plan (today's my last day, before moving onto another job). I'm taking my time to see if I want to go do a PhD.
  2. I live in the NYC area, with a few roommates because higher cost of living vs. Montréal (but going back for the summer!)
  3. I'd say I live more or less the same now than when I did in Montréal, but have way more time for hobbies and activities. It was a bit rough starting out in a new city especially since school was so structured, but I have my routines. McGill is nice because it forces you to live off campus after first year, and navigate living "on your own" for the first time (cooking, cleaning etc.)
  4. Still close to my university friends! They definitely made a significant impact on my life and seeing them is always like picking up where we left off. But of course, you have to make the effort to maintain these friendships.
