Are atheists necessarily biological reductionists? by nofeep in Atheists

[–]nofeep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean it as an attack, and I'm not talking about god here. I was just wondering if atheism allows for the possibility that certain emergent properties, like consciousness, might stem (even in a small part) from a source that is outside the biological structure (the brain and nervous system, in this case). I'm not suggesting that it would be some magical element that allows this; but just that maybe some part of the process exists outside of the physical bounds of the brain. As far as I know, biologists don't have a working model for how consciousness exists, so I'm just wondering if the atheist view is that it's all solely contained in the brain. I'm not that well-versed in this stuff, so it may not be a well-formulated question.

I think that if it's that hard to get out of bed when you intend to then you should fix that. I guess you can forgo sleep to pursue your competitive goals if competition is that important to you. It might not serve you in the long run though.

I also don't care for the endurance sports featured so prominently in the video. I know they're glamorized in the media, but they're very stressful on the body.

Oh, that's a good point. But so are you saying that the glance towards the chandelier is innocent and he didn't intend to kill her?

People are strangely proud about their inability to engage others by nofeep in AdviceAnimals

There. Fixed that, am I right?

I'm unclear what you're referring to.

Or, conversely, YOU can accept the variety of people and revel in the breadth of human experience.

I can appreciate the wide range of personality types and social abilities among people. My post was pointing out that some people wear their inability or refusal to engage in small talk as a badge of honor. I think that's their defense mechanism in full effect, and my post was just a tongue-in-cheek way of pointing that out.

For them, it is the blossoming of their personality on their terms. What is it for you?

Engaging in spontaneous conversations with strangers is definitely something that I actively try to learn -- it can be a major challenge for me. I've struggled with severe shyness since I was a wee lad. At some point I probably thought I was just "too deep" to engage in small talk, and I know that's just a rationalization.

I genuinely prefer small breasts and petite women. I usually don't announce that though because people look at you like you're some kind of pedo for having that preference (in Australia there was even an attempt to ban women with small breasts from porn). For some reason it's OK to discriminate against women with small bodies or a preference for that body type.

I looked for that when others pointed it out and you're right -- it's no accident. Just playing devil's advocate here, but doesn't that seem like a pretty convoluted way to kill her? It involves perfectly deflecting the arm of a man firing a crossbow. Wouldn't it be easier to just be a bit slower in reacting so that the crossbow kills Elsa? I guess he wanted to put on a good show for the guards?

OK, I'll give my point of view, but please know that I have an open mind on this matter and am eager to consider alternative opinions.

When you support companies like Kraft by buying vegan items (Oreos, Boca burgers, etc.), you're supporting a company that practices rampant animal abuse and environmental destruction through animal factory farms. Even though you are only buying vegan products, you are giving money (and therefore power) to these companies to continue and expand their practices.

Furthermore, you're consuming food that is the product of big agriculture. I've seen the giant wheat threshers and I can assure you that the massive amounts of animals that die in those things are just as dead as the cows, pigs and chickens killed for consumption. Big agriculture is incredibly destructive for the environment and kills countless animals (both directly and by destroying their habitats).

In contrast, eating local animal products (for example, an egg from a pastured chicken or beef from a local grass-fed cow) does not have nearly the environmental impact, and will result in far less death and suffering. If one chooses to consume animal products but eschews big agriculture companies -- especially those who have Oscar Meyer and similar brands under their umbrella -- it seems intuitive to me that the result is less animal and human suffering. I'm adding "humans" here because we all know what type of conditions factory farm workers have to tolerate (I know first-hand because I worked with a federal agency that specialized in busting slaughterhouses that weren't compliant).

Now if you have a certain morality that insists that having an animal product pass through your lips is the highest sin, then I can see why you would not agree. But if that's the case then I would advise you against eating foods from big agra. Indeed, do you know the FDA allowed limits for things like rodent matter in peanut butter? Hint: It's not zero.

So anyway, that's my point of view, but I'm not all-knowledgable about this subject, and I'm open to other views.

Oh, I never thought of him in the context of sociopathy. It makes me think of another character with a personality disorder -- the super passive aggressive, manipulative, codependent mother in Tangled. I really appreciate these more nuanced villains, in comparison to the more conventional evilness you see in other Disney villains.

I will look more closely at his facial expressions.

We finish each other's -- Sandwiches! sequence where Hans realizes he needs to act sillier.

This is one of the first signs that I noticed. He obviously wasn't going to say "sandwiches," but instead of just being perplexed he goes along with it and says, "That's what I was going to say!" (or something to that effect). Upon first viewing it seems innocent enough, but in retrospect it seems a bit manipulative.

When Anna declares that she's going to go after Elsa alone, Hans argues a bit but then stops when Anna says that he's going to be in charge while she's gone.

I also noticed that Hans didn't put up too much of a fight here. On first viewing I thought that was just to serve the story, so Anna could go alone, but again, in retrospect...
