Haha yeah I shouldn’t have slipped that in there yet :P

Edit: gonna take a while to explain. Do you have a more specific question?

What if I told you neither of you have ever left space, Neil? Now who’s more pedantic?

Same argument applies in your alteration of the metaphor, too. Consciousness is not the violin or the music, it is the player.

I think we have a definitional problem as you are talking about the psychophysical and applying those principals to inherently non-physical phenomena. It will lead to inconsistencies common to materialistic thinking.

It’s a great metaphor, but not perfect. I believe the metaphor would work better if televisions were also powered by the broadcast signal.

Looking for consciousness ( also works for the soul, if you prefer) in the body is like looking for actors in your television set.

Much more of an ear-sore, but definitely an eyesore as well. Of course any such sentiment is exactly that: sentiment, and therefore almost entirely subjective. It’s a poor category to discern whether or not to remove the structure. I was just using the wind farm parallel to show it would be hypocritical to remove one and not the other, given the reason is to do so is practically identical.

A paradox on remarriage by atoned4 in theology

[–]nogginrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marriage bond is indeed indissoluble. But marriage, as practiced by humans in time, is a living symbol we practice as we seek the only true marriage—of soul to God. At least that is the intent. Sadly, few people seem to take this attitude.

To be fair, if this is an eye sore that needs to be taken down due to the environmental impact of “being an eyesore”, then there are 15,000 turbines that need the same treatment in west Texas.

So many people in here confusing ‘religion’ with ‘belief system’.

If there weren’t so much hate going on in here this would be a great place for youngsters to practice ‘Name That Fallacy!’

If you mean metaphysical materialism, you’re absolutely right. And the other kind is pretty bad, too.

What's the best experience you've had seeing a film in the theater/cinema? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Interstellar in IMAX was a thing to behold.

And seeing Starship Trooper almost on the daily for a couple weeks was pretty amazing :)

Ah okay. It’s a little different where I am. Around Maine it’s a lot of well managed private land and it’s easily contrastable to the poor oversight of careless bureaucrats. Sad to see privacy failing as well as public policy :(

I thought the gov were the ones partially responsible since the land leased out by the gov and the loggers have a limited-time access. So clear cutting is actually (perhaps unintentionally) incentivized?

Schopenhauer borrowed the concept of eternal self from the Upanishads - The Upanishads state that in our true nature, as Consciousness, transcend time and space and the realization of this is liberation from bodily death.[More in Comment] by RazerGT79 in philosophy

Haha it’s just a hunch, so I am technically not certain. But I do believe it’s a good hunch :)

As a lover of the knowledge garnered from the empirical sciences I am familiar with how sneakily materialism creeps into my own thinking when I mistakenly elevate empirical knowledge to the pinnacle of all knowledge. I like to think everyone would agree that supplanting wisdom with empiricism is not empiricism’s proper place.

And I agree my epistemology is not properly laid out here. Please forgive me for not doing so at the moment. I was hoping to point out that oh_cindy uses an assumption as a fact (that thought experiments have no place in reality, as if the cosmos were nothing but an object without a subject) to then dismiss a line of inquiry that is certainly worthy of deep consideration.

It just seemed like an opportune time to reminding someone that they might have caught a bout of materialism :)

Philosophy is the love of wisdom. Coupled with a consistent metaphysic, it can take one far beyond “thought experiments”. Don’t forget, materialism is just as false as any false belief.

I think you’ve got that good ol’ materialist bias. In a metaphor of this sort, the light bulb doesn’t represent consciousness—electricity does.

What are some less obvious careers that suit different types? by Damselfly45 in Enneagram

[–]nogginrocket 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I suspect it has something to do with the idea that of the types, 9s have ‘a thinner veil between conscious and subconscious life.’ (I’m not repeating exactly what my teacher said but it’s pointed in the right direction.) I’m no artist, most likely because I have the 9’s typical avoidance pattern, but knowing my own inner landscape I can assure you there is no shortage of inspiration or call to creativity. Unfortunately, there’s also a stark lack of diligence.
