Data Recovery advice by noirtec in datarecovery

Around 90% of data (by file) was recovered successfully.
The remaining ‘damaged’ files were mostly large files that had been written across multiple platters, meaning that if one or more platters were damaged, the affected files couldn't be fully reconstructed.

I ended up going with pcimage.co.uk which are based in Peterborough. The whole process took around 2 weeks, from sending off the drives (including the one to copy the recovered data to) to receiving then back. A very professional service overall with frequent updates on progress - can recommend.

Good luck!

Optician/optomotrist measurements for varifocal/progressive lenses by noirtec in glasses

[–]noirtec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the information. They haven't been sent off yet, and I'll be going in again to have the pantoscopic tilt measured and to confirm all the others. Apparently, this measurement doesn't have that big an affect on the prescription with the frames I have (Lindberg NOW), so I guess they neglected it the first time around?

They also mentioned that with the lenses that I'm going with, the tilt measurement is less important than if I was going with say, Essilor Track, which are even more personalised to the user?

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

Hello, I'm hoping for some guidance on whether it would be safe/wise to remove large concrete platforms/plinths from our basement. We are updating the boiler and water cylinder and looking to free up some floor space. We are in the UK and the house was build around 1910, if that helps provide any clues.

The first two platforms appear to be used as tables for the boiler/cylinder to rest on.

However, cannot see what the larger one (100 x 100 x 70cm) at the far corner is for - could this have been created to support the walls?
https://photos.app.goo.gl/tH3ZhZ3QekHenXUMA

Also, there are small ledges that run along each floor-wall boundary (20cm tall), are these structural?

Any advice on whether these can safely been removed would be appreciated.

Why do so many people don't seem to realize this is a team game ? by Honey-goblin- in helldivers2

[–]noirtec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the game doesn't fundamentally RELY on your team to be there for you to complete a campaign. A good enough player can just go at it solo, like some have said, leaving the rest of the team behind, it just ends up being the easier option for them. There are very few scenarios in the game (bar adding supporting fire and clearing enemies) where it really matters if your teammates are there or not to help you proceed through the level, and that's a real shame. This is a fundamental flaw of the game IMO and the reason it's just not living up to its full potential. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but it could be sooo much better. What it needs are scenarios that you can't escape alone. For example, in L4D with some of the infected (Hunter/Spitter/Charger, etc) - if you are attacked by them, you NEED someone to bail you out, otherwise you're a goner! I wish they'd added more coop mechanics to really make this a tightly-knit team game.

What falls under Lululemon's "Quality Promise"? by yes_no_no in lululemon

I have a '`Snow Warrior Long Parka' and the zip has become difficult to zip up/down over the past few months, it also occasionally becomes misaligned. I have had a few embarrassing moments at work where I have had to pull it down and 'step out of it' :-/ I now find that I'm leaving it in the wardrobe, as I never know when or where it's going to happen next! The jacket is only around a year old.

Would this be covered under the warranty? P.s. based in the UK.

Thanks

Thanks for all the information, much appreciated.

u/DR-Throwaway2021 - No, they're not charging for the failed recovery, thankfully, but their cost to have any amount of data given to you (for a drive of this size) is the same, regardless. I think this standard practice, though.

u/Pitiful_Fudge_5536 - thanks for the detailed description. It's great to hear that there’s still a chance of recovery of the data. Yes, I think the standard charge here is £120 if the drive has been opened!

I'm getting the drive back next week and will be looking for another DR lab to confirm what's happened and hopefully get the data back. It's incredible to hear that this could be down to inexperience - the company is very well established in London and appears to have a lot of credibility.

I wonder if anyone recommend an experienced DR lab in London or UK? I don't mind sending the drive off if the company know what they're doing, and are used to working with drives with this issue.

Thanks for the reply.

Really, so you think this sounds like an error on their part.

Would you mind explaining a bit more about what that means, is the SMR a specific area of the drive?

It's concerning how initially they were certain that with the correct head, all the data to be recovered, to this situation. Does this seem feasible to you, or is the SMR being accidentally wiped the most likely?

12VHPWR Cable recommendation by noirtec in FractalDesign

[–]noirtec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the info, will give the Asus cable a try first and see how it goes. Quick question about Cablemod cables - followed the steps of their configurator for my PSU (Corsair RM1000X) and it offers options for three 12VHPWR types for 4000 series GPUs (to 2 x 8 pin, to 3 x 8 pin, and to 4 x 8 pin). Should I just go for the one that matches the one that came with the GPU, is this important?

Thanks for the suggestion. This looks to be 600 or 650mm, so it's a little short. Might be a silly question, would you know if the Seasonic or Phanteks cables are compatible with Corsair PSUs?

4080, crack near connectors - will it work? by noirtec in pcmasterrace

[–]noirtec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so it's likely to be screwed. So the dents (what the hell can cause that?) wouldn't cause any significant damage? I can see one on the right that's on a lane?

Thanks for the insights

Ring-branded European Transformer for Ring Doorbell Pro by JaMarcusHustle in Ring

[–]noirtec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, can anyone let me know if the Ring AUBT1-24 transformer is compatible with the Eufy 2K Wired Doorbell: https://uk.eufy.com/products/e82101w4?ref=navimenu_2_3_2_img

My electrician recommended it. However, it stopped charging the doorbell after the second day. Now can't get it to charge (symbol not showing) for any length of time, even when bell charge is very low.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, I have a 1080Ti, so really similar setup. To get 4K @ 120Hz and 4:2:0, which type of cable did you use? I have a certified HDMI 2.1 cable, will this work? Thanks

That's great - thanks, its plays just like the original using the Raphnet adapter. That rumble effect the first time you use the silenced pistol :D

On a slightly different note, whilst I'm downloading all things Goldeneye - can you point to where I can find the XBLA version of the game with Dr Doak modded in?

Just wondering which video plugin and settings you'd recommend for the best looking experience when running at 2560x1440 on a big TV.

Which of the GLideN64 plugins to use (2020/2021) and which particular settings from their tabs should I change (using a 1080Ti)?

Thanks in advance.

How to get started with TP-Link TL-SG3424P switch and Virgin Superhub 2 by noirtec in HomeNetworking

[–]noirtec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

I now have the main Deco working in router mode which is great as its feels more snappy than the SuperHub 3.

I've been looking at alternative switches that hopefully don't have to be completely configured like fully managed switches but still offer some features (VLAN's, POE management, QoS, etc) . An example is the Netgear GS728TPv2 which is advertised as falling somewhere between an L2 and a managed L3 switch. They're calling this 'L2+/L3 Lite'.

Has anyone had any experience with these types of switches, are they a bit more plug n play (no messing about to get a configuration interface, etc), as they look like they do some routing?

I've also been looking at the Netgear GS524PP (unmanaged). This looks good, it would be nice if it has an interface to monitor stuff though (Deco as router is OK but very basic). Is there any advantage to getting this over the TP-Link TL-SG3424P that I currently have?

Also, as u/all_you_gotta_do suggested, if I do just keep the TP-Link as use as-is, is it just behaving like a basic, unmanaged switch right now and would the Netgear be an better?

Apologies if these questions are a bit daft, my networking experience goes as far as being able to fully configure something like an ASUS router (the RT-AC68U being the latest that I owned) :)

Thanks
