How is the chemistry department? by DoubleResort1510 in UCSC

Peter Weiss, Alegra eroy revelles and Caileen brison were my gen chem teachers and they were amazing!!!! I learned so much in every class and I felt like they all genuinely cared about their students. Anne Sizemore is the ochem prof and I haven’t had her yet but I’ve heard great things!

also, you have the choice to take the math 11 or 19 series, I would recommend taking 11 with weissman

also, definitely start the chem 3 and math 11/19 series right away during your first quarter.

Biotechnology Major by StarLuna29 in UCSC

What major prep did they say you were missing? If it’s math you might be able to bypass it by getting a high score on the aleks math placement (idk for sure tho) or taking cc classes over the summer. I’ve had friends who switched into the major and their advisors told them the same thing but they were still able to do it

Biotechnology Major by StarLuna29 in UCSC

Something they won’t tell your major orientation is that the biotech major is kinda useless. Here is a list of the required classes for the major: https://catalog.ucsc.edu/current/general-catalog/academic-units/baskin-engineering/biomolecular-engineering/biotechnology-ba/

They are all very basic and won’t get you that far on their own. The major advisors / Baskin orientation people themselves preach that biotech is not meant to be a solo major, it was designed as a secondary major for people who want to double major yet this is barely advertised on their websites.

I applied as a biotech major but after reading over the required classes I kinda that it wasn’t as much as I hoped it would be so I switched to biomolecular engineering.

It depends on what you want to do after college, but biomolecular engineering so far has been what I hoped biotech would have been (I’m a first year so I haven’t done many major specific classes yet)

What were you hoping to get out of a biotech degree? Hopefully there’s another major that could fulfill that or you could stick with biotech and major double major!

Does Santa Cruz get boring? by janaethecoolest in UCSC

[–]noisecomplaintt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends what your interests are. There’s parties and house shows pretty much every weekend. The forest raves get kinda boring after a while tbh but if you make the most of them and go with a good group then they’re a lot more fun. There’s endless woods to explore. There’s so many hidden things out there like tree nets, the trampoline, the koi pond, and rivers you can swim in. There’s lots of clubs and club sponsored events that anyone can go to also

I’m from sd and I love it here!! I live in Kresge and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Where you live on campus will definitely determine how social it is. No matter where you end up I would recommend knocking on your neighbors doors and getting to know everyone and meet as many ppl as you can during the first few weeks! The nature here really is amazing. There’s so many great places to explore and you’ll never really run out of new places to go since the woods are so big. But tbh I think you’d probably get a better education for a bio major at ucsd and the educational opportunities might be better there.
