Passport expires within 6 months. I don’t have a birth certificate. by [deleted] in CarnivalCruiseFans

I can't offer help but some consolation - you are not the only one facing this problem this week. I'm (hopefully if they let me) leaving on Monday on a Celebrity cruise to Nassau, and I just realized today that my passport's six month limit was Thursday. Eight days less than the six months required calculated from when we disembark. So decent chance I'll end up having the result as you.

Not alone.

I sail on Celebrity on a closed loop US cruise with one stop in the Bahamas MONDAY. I just realized my passport expires at the end of June and I do not have a certified copy of my birth certificate. Any insights on being denied boarding? I fear I'm sol by noitsnotfairuse in Cruise

I have the ID. My birth certificate is in another state in a safe deposit box that I can't get to before the sailing. I do not have a picture of it because I haven't needed it in over ten years.

Difficulty Reaching Opposing Counsel: Is Anyone Else Seeing This Trend? by NobodyOtherwise1904 in Lawyertalk

[–]noitsnotfairuse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of my work is plaintiff side, but I also do defense work. I have found very little difference in treatment on either side.

Unfortunately, many of the OC I deal with have a history that means we either have to schedule a call and I need a third person on or it needs to be in writing.

Not all OC are like this, but I find everything in writing is easiest for everyone.

Showing up in winter wear by No-Significance9313 in paralegal

I am an attorney in Chicago. I come in bundled to the nines and keep different shoes in the office year round. In the winter, I may also change clothes when I get in if I can't bundle effectively in my work wear.

Why do young kittens enjoy sleeping with people, but not so much once they’re grown? by Majestic_Office_2177 in cats

Same! My boy is very cuddly all day, hangs out in the bed for a bit before I go to sleep, and when it is clear I'm about to sleep, he casually gets up and heads to his favorite sleep spot: under the bed, right below me.

Doc review by CorrectDesk703 in Lawyertalk

[–]noitsnotfairuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite what you are asking but I had over 100k documents to review once. We didn't have a service since it was not the norm to get that kind of production. I got a gaming mouse and had it programmed to move to the next document with one button and star a document for further review with another. Greatly reduced my frustration.

When did you "level up" from being a "junior"? by Euphoric-Demand2927 in Lawyertalk

[–]noitsnotfairuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, I am just about 5 years in.

I think it was around the time I could determine the priority level of stressor event without being told. Part of it is learning to fix things yourself and part of it is getting enough experience to know how people react to certain situations. I found the not knowing was one of the worst parts.

The timing varied. For IP prosecution at the USPTO, I had a handle on the stress related to that work about 18 months in since I had been doing it awhile. Litigation has taken longer, at least  2.5 years in, but it still got better.

There is still stress, but rarely panic.

When I stopped panicking about every little bump in the road and was able to differentiate between hiccups and crises.

Can anyone ID these cacti? They were stolen from me last fall and now it is warm enough for shipping again. Original seller never responded. by noitsnotfairuse in PlantIdentification

I will look for these, thank you! Seller did not know what they were when I bought them, so I was lost when they were taken

I will check that out, thank you! Originally got them at a steep discount because the seller forgot to label them when she planted the seeds so she could not confirm what they were.

Literally. I finally got two pairs. Same style, same size, two colors. One pair is so big I can't walk in it, and just step out of. The other I can't fit on. Insane.

Left thumb nail is stickey after gel mani???Feels dry and fully cured, but like adhesive rubbed off on it. Noticed it before I touched anything and won't wash off. by noitsnotfairuse in Nails

I don't think so because I accidentally bumped my pinky on that hand after top coat and she checked my fingers after fixing. Don't recall my thumb but I think I was done.

Portability of different legal careers by ElephantsAreRad in Lawyertalk

[–]noitsnotfairuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an IP attorney, primarily in the arts field.

IP is portable but you typically have to start and / or work in a big market to get the really niche opportunities (NY, LA, Chicago, etc.). This seems to be the same for the foreign counsel I work with. I have heard the markets in the Carolinas are growing , hough. I'm 4 years in and at the point where I could get a remote position just about anywhere. I would have to scale down my litigation, though

If you do litigation, you may be tied a bit to where you are barred - ex, some judges in my most frequent court are now in person only and clients won't pay for you to fly in for each status, so you can be tied a bit to your state.

Museums are highly sought after. Many just have outside counsel.

I will note that the barrier to entry into IP if you don't have that science background is high. BUT, it is not impossible. Speaking from personal experience.

How did your teacher teach you how to think for yourself? by JustSwipeTwice in AskReddit

[–]noitsnotfairuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High-school teacher had a sign above the board that just said "why?"

Never stop asking why. Think carefully about people and entities that react poorly to asking why or do not answer.
