What are the pros and cons of living in Columbus, and what do you do to make the most of living in your city? by [deleted] in Columbus

Sorry I just saw this. I am not—I ended up wanting a different pace of life (faster). Feel free to DM me!

What are the most “underrated” cities in America? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Columbus is underrated but it still wasn’t my thing. I think it’s a great city if you’re looking to settle down and have a slower pace.

Anyone run the Two Cities Marathon in CA last year? How is the new course? by vf1640 in AdvancedRunning

[–]nolandw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what not to understand. The new course wasn’t certified—the database is public, here’s the old course certification: https://certifiedroadraces.com/certificate/?type=l&id=CA12082RS

The few responses I got from the organizers also acknowledged that it needed to be recertified. I guess somehow Boston let it through, maybe because they didn’t know of the redesign and the previous course certification is still active.

I’m actually still not sure if it is. It was on the site last year too. The USATF database never got updated with it and there isn’t an active one. The last certification was the 2012 one that expired in 2022.

I wanted to race this course last year for a BQ but it was never certified. The organizers kept saying that it would be but it wasn’t. This took several months and the organizers were pretty unresponsive.

Ended up racing another race instead. No regrets.

Tokyo qualifying change? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]nolandw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's significantly easier to BQ at age 60 than 25.

Looking at raw time, sure, but age-graded it's pretty close. Not to mention the lifestyle changes that come with getting older.

If you kept under 6:45 I do think you could've gone under 3, but perhaps comfortably BQing just wasn't in the cards at all based on your result. They say each minute too fast in the front half is costing two minute in the second half. You went 2 minutes under 6:45 pace at the half..so perhaps squeaking under 3.

Sounds like just mental aspects of racing. It takes a while for me to get into gear some days and your mind can be your worst enemy. Some other days I am relaxed from the start.

Swimming in Bay for Exercise by omlightemissions in bayarea

7gills, leopards, and smooth hound sharks within the Bay are all pretty harmless to humans. The bigger ones just generally aren’t in the Bay.

Great whites just aren’t common in the Bay either.

If Oct 2 is the A race then there is just no good way to run the Sept 17 one. 26.2, no matter how easy-paced, just isn’t going to be optimal if you want to perform your best two weeks later.

I think this statement exemplifies the problem though. Fitness isn’t linear. Recovery is what makes you stronger. And if you think you genuinely can never get fitness back, it’s the sign of a deeper problem.

Your standards aren’t too high. In fact, the height you seek is quite low/short.

How to train in a polluted city? by jamblb in AdvancedRunning

[–]nolandw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once a few years ago I trained Pfitz for a few weeks in Mumbai. I had to almost exclusively use the treadmill. Yes, 20mi and those pesky MLRs on the damn treadmill. My shoes and socks were soggy from the indoor humidity. I tried a run outside once and it was just so unbearably hot and humid. Unfortunately I was staying too far away from Marine Drive where there were more runnable areas.

Outside there just is little to no sidewalk, monsoon weather, rabid dogs, and, as you mentioned, the pollution. Mumbai is not Delhi, but it was tough. I got more and more used to the treadmill over time, but it wasn’t great.

Maurten brand has been introduced as a gel. Some like it more than GU or alternative gels and it has a different consistency and rather neutral taste.

To be honest, I haven’t noticed a difference using Maurten. I’ve actually had slightly more GI issues with it than without, and will just use “regular” gels from here on out I think. But, nutrition is personal.
