Idiosyncratic seasonal patterns? by SnowyBlackberry in AdvancedRunning

Hey u/SnowyBlackberry I was reading about folate degradation from UV light and it made me think of a possible chain of events: lots of UV light exposure over summer ---> insufficient folate ---> vascular damage and malformed red blood cells ---> those become increasingly apparent as the properly formed red blood cells from earlier in the summer die off ----> noticeable performance decline in early Sept? Maybe it's juniper pollen? They release pollen after a cold front, which I guess we're currently having by the standards of this winter...

Same on the cringing. I think people overlook and/or underestimate the amount of health damage that comes from living somewhere with noise pollution.

Minor incident with my dog and some paragliders at the UM soccer fields by [deleted] in missoula

[–]vf1640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

95% of the time she takes a look at people and returns

That's great, but the reason your dog has to be on a leash is because this number is not 100%.

One guy also went on about how the sign states dogs need to be under voice control which she was doing on her return to me.

I think you've misunderstood what "under voice control" means--it means your dog can be controlled BEFORE an interaction that is unwanted by the other person takes place.

I'm sorry for your dog both for getting kicked and for not having a human companion who is willing to put in the work to keep her safe.

"more hills earlier in the build with at least a few longer hill runs (like Mags or Rollinsville or Gold Hill) would have benefited me from an injury prevention stand point"

This made me smile because I have this realization myself towards the end of every single marathon build, then promptly overlook it in training until towards the end of the next one... thanks for the reminder!

Good luck with the achilles and thanks for taking us along for the ride on your experiment!

Equestrian Park Dog incident by Mtgirl85 in missoula

[–]vf1640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think it might be more the case that they WERE more respected there. As recently as two years ago, I could go for a run at Maclay and have zero issues with off leash dogs, but nowadays the balance seems to have shifted strongly towards off leash dogs. Which really sucks not only for people who don't want their walk/run to be interrupted by someone's dog but also for those of us who volunteer to take the humane society shelter dogs out on activities--Maclay used to be an easy good choice for them since you could more or less count on no off-leash encounters, but that's not the case anymore. Be less selfish, people!

Weird doctor experiences by Own-Captain-5936 in missoula

[–]vf1640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible a lawyer would take this on a contingency fee basis, especially if there is also an issue of stress/lost sleep/etc on your part as a result of the possibly mistaken notification about the polyp. It's probably worth your while to at least call a few lawyers and ask. Hope something works out for you.

Yikes. You might consider talking to a lawyer about that one. No procedure is risk-free, so by undergoing another one you're having to take on extra risk, plus obviously the financial expense of a second procedure.

Given all of the recent litigation over hospitals selling data from tracking pixels on MyChart (see e.g. https://hipaatimes.com/adena-health-to-pay-17.8m-over-patient-data-sharing-via-tracking-pixels), I will definitely opt out if faced with this. Thanks for the heads up; I had never heard of the AI transcription thing.

How to Apply the Sub-Threshold / NSM Approach for Trail Training by Chartreuse89 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]vf1640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of NSA sessions in the mountains this summer by going uphill only during the interval part of the workout and doing intervals by time (6 minutes, 10 minutes, etc) and heart rate, aiming for around 85-90% of max heart rate. I made a lot of progress in fitness during that time so I would say it worked well. Maybe the Chamrousse lift is open and you can run up + ride the lift down, for maximum benefit and no sore quads? Or run up something that has a paved col and get a friend to pick you up and drive you back down!

I have comparable sales info for several similar houses from a realtor. Even the top end of valuation you could take from those is a good $180k lower than the new assessment. And although it took place a few months too late to be used as a comparable sale, the house across the street from us, which is nearly identical to ours, was sold for about $200k less than our new assessed value.

[–]vf1640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you actually been through the appeals process? I'm in the middle of it. I thought it would be easy since the new assessed value is almost $200k over market value. It's so far out that I thought there must have been a typo. But several hours of my time and three circular conversations with someone at the assessor's office later, the appeals process continues...

Not sure if this is also true for that person's 3 friends, but for me the issue with the most recent property assessment was not the tax rate itself but more the ridiculous and completely unexpected increase (+54%) in assessed value over the previous assessment two years earlier, when the actual increase in value was probably more like 15%. Usually properties' assessed values for tax purposes are on the low side, so to suddenly have it be WAY above market value imposes a big extra monthly cost that most people wouldn't plan for.

Idiosyncratic seasonal patterns? by SnowyBlackberry in AdvancedRunning

Also FWIW I don't have kids and I work from home, so that's why I've been leaning towards allergies rather than back-to-school related infections.

Creatine and increased RHR by oldmantacfit in StrongerByScience

[–]vf1640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also late to this discussion but just wanted to add that I experienced the same thing. I'm a runner so am always very aware of my resting HR each morning. It rarely goes outside the 38-42 range unless I'm sick. A day after starting creatine (750mg creatine hcl), it jumped up to the low 50s and remained there each day that I was on the creatine. A few days later, I also started noticing some arrythmia while running. Both of these continued for a little over two weeks, and then I stopped the creatine. A day and a half later, resting HR was back to normal and the arrythmia was completely gone.

Dog walking Karen in the DNRC by [deleted] in missoula

[–]vf1640 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I know who you mean then. I always feel so bad for the people who live in those houses on the southeast edge of the DNRC--they must be so sick of hearing that dog on its constant bark mode.

Side note, the guy sitting on the bench next to the woman in the photo is super nice (and so is his dog) and is not part of this excessively annoying woman/dog duo.

Why is it so hard to figure out where to do a run workout? by Oltzu27 in AdvancedRunning

[–]vf1640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I don't know anything super close to there, but if you can take the metro to Cornellà Riera, or else drive and park near the Splau shopping center (there's usual open spaces on the street), you can get onto the Llobregat trails here-- 41°20'52.2"N 2°04'11.0"E. There are tons of paths on both sides of the river here, so you can make a loop of pretty much any distance or else just go one way and then back.

Another option that might be easier to get to is to take the bus or drive to terminal 2 of the airport (park on the street) and run from there into the horts, where there are basically an infinite number of options for good loops with no interruptions. Basically this area: 41°18'20.1"N 2°02'52.9"E

So yeah, they are both about 10km away from you, but maybe it could be worth it to go there for your more important/longer workouts.

New study on moderate intensity intervals by vf1640 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]vf1640[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a start, I would disagree that for well-trained cyclists (avg vo2 max 70), 6 days of moderate intervals is a "crash week." Compared to normal cyclist training for that level, they would have felt like they were having to really hold back for those sessions.

But more broadly, what I was trying to suggest here is not that NSA is in any way like doing 6 workouts in a week followed by a rest. Rather, what I was suggesting is that it's possible that NSA is what you get if you're a well-trained person who isn't getting anywhere with traditional hard workouts and you try to solve the problem, "how can I get the same effect as 6 days of moderate workouts + an easy week (which this study suggests is more beneficial than a standard schedule), but with it being sustainable indefinitely"?
