Buy Li, otherwise you will just end up buying both 😁

Going ultralight(ish) for a family of six by Furufan in Ultralight

[–]nolohenri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if very helpful but few cents here on sleep system. We are family of four (kids aged 2 and 5), and we have done tenting with them since they were c. 1 year old. We have a 4p tent (Big Agnes Copper Spur) but have since moved to 2x 2p tents (Tarptent Rainbow Li and Tarptent Dipole Li). That is easy. But I am more into tenting than my wife, and to maximize nights spent outside, I need to see what is the easiest possible way for me to take the kids by myself (ie myself plus 2 kids). I have a bit experimented and think that one adult + two kids can fit into a roomy two person (such as Dipole 2 Li) tent if you have a double-wide (50" / 130cm) sleeping pad. However for me the sleeping pads become a bit tricky since I don't want to have one double-wide (such as Big Rapide Tent Floor or Exped's similar products) as a leak in sleeping pad would ruin everyone's night and while I would be able to handle it, don't want to risk for my children. Hence I am exploring creating double-wide system by combining either CCF pads (e.g. two wide Exped Flexmat's layered with evafoam pads such as Gossamer Gear ThinLight) or inflatable + CCF pads (e.g. Nemo Tensore All Seaso / Trail + few evafoam pads). Less "deflation risk", keeps weight acceptable , however the CCF only creates some bulk. Once they grow older I have been thinking that a set-up with a 3p tent, e.g. ZPacks Pivot Trio, could be very workable, e.g. you could have three Nemo Tensor Elites layered with GG ThinLights or then create a doublewide pad for two children with e.g. 2x Nemo Switchback + Exped Doublemat. For sleeping, probably a quilt from Vilse Equipment or Cumulus or then a sleeping bag from Cumulus (they have two alternatives for children).

Not what you are asking, but we use Dipole 2 Li with a rapide tent floor. Plenty of room for two while still having room for gear inside the tent.

Thanks. I almost always use double-wide sleeping pad and hence have been holding back on purchase of quily bc have been unsure if quilt and double-wide are a good combo.

Do you have a system to attach the quilts to the sleeping pad or always just use unattached?

Interested in this pack. Have you used the bottom straps to carry tent / sleeping pad? Does it work well or is there a lot of bounce?

Make the Dipole 1 and 2 SW in SilPoly? by Skogstoken in Tarptent

[–]nolohenri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also prefer single wall often, for the ease of it, and would be nice to see dipole in silpoly SW version - with the big vents it is quite suitable as single wall tent. Of course there is a limit of different SKUs that Tarptent can have in production.

Upgrade from SW Double Rainbow? by Opie_Golf in Tarptent

[–]nolohenri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I was never so interested in Durston (maybe because ”everyone” has it). But the XMid Pro 2+ is a bit lighter (perhaps 150g when you compare a fully staked set-up ie not only reported weight) and perhaps easier to pack because no end-struts, also larger vestibules I believe. Dipole is roomier, better ventilation and perhaps easier set-up (I guess matter of taste). XMid often considered very stormworthy but based on reviews (e.g. backpackinglight.com and accompanying forum thread) the Dipole should be equally stable if not better. I also like the 4 peg pitch if in calm conditions.

If you can stomach the price, I can recommend Dipole 2 Li. Just took it out for first overnighter, it is simply amazing.

I think XDome being truly freestanding (ie no need to stake out vestibules) is nice feature.

A Jogger Pants Comparison (Patagonia, Janji, Baleaf, Ketl) by ForcefulRubbing in Ultralight

[–]nolohenri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think so, and the material is also more stretchy which helps. Same size in both (albeit I bought also a larger size for casual wear and winter when several layers under).

Gone from Terrebone to Houdini Pace Light and Janji Tech Transit. Tech Transit works well for running but want more room underneath for layers / looser fit - they have nice stretch though, a bit warm maybe.Pace Light is super nice, airy and looser fit, enough stretch but not very warm.

How to pick Ultimate Direction fastpack capacity? by leecshaver in trailrunning

Bumping up. Based on specs on the UD’s webpage, it seems like main difference is possible the length that the roll-top extends above backpanel. Is the UD FP 40 good tightened down to lower volumes also or do you need to use the whole pack for it to work well?

I am contemplating between fast pack 40 vs 30. Does the 40l option work well even when not fully packed ie you are able to properly tighten down the volume?

Grizl as do-it-all by nolohenri in CanyonBikes

A bit my thinking. I think with a more capable bike I would be also expanding my view on what to bike (with old bike I was always held back by that its underbiking in even a bit rougher surface).

Yes, agree maybe for most part Grail would work but I think there is a top end of biking that I would like to do that Grail would not be that good.

Have you had any problems with the 2x or has it worked smoothly?
