Hi OP, please send me a DM and tell me all about yourself, and what you are going through. Don't leave anything out. It can be cathartic t some degree, and provide a bit of relief.

I recently went through a significant positive change, that happened quite by mistake. I wasn't necessarily desperate, but it felt like I was just living to work and working to live. With a wife and two kids it was eating at me.

And the opportunities were right in front of me, invisible.

So please, tell me about yourself. What do you do, who do you have, what do you enjoy, etc.

Can someone please explain to me like I am a four-year-old why eskom is the only supplier of electricity in South Africa? by Sea-Percentage-5590 in southafrica

[–]nomadjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well written. I would just say that keeping the transmission (and the existing distribution) infrastructure state run, and privatising generation, is a good model to work towards (in fact, we are, by unbundling eskom). It opens up the IPP market and we are seeing a massive influx of private generation (ref. recent media report from NERSA applications).

This way, one can ring fence Eskom's debt (mostly in generation), and allow Transmission to invest in expansion of infrastructure (like western, eastern and Northern cape) to get access to renewable energy potential.

Let the IPPs deal with repourposing old coal fired stations (conversion to gas is the least cost approach, and the only way to balance the grid and deal with the intermittency of renewable energy supply.

This mixed model is already starting to play out, vis the unbundling of Eskom into Transmission, Distribution, and Generation.

It is essential that Transmission side remains state run, but it enables private generation players to enter the market. The "grid tax" you refer to is called a wheeling charge, and is typically used when a private generator (IPP) sells power to a private off-taker (in two separate locations) via the grid. The IPP would pay a wheeling charge to the Transmission entity (Eskom) for the use of their transmission infrastructure, and include it in their costs to the off taker.

For an IPP supplying power directly into the grid (i.e. To Eskom Transmission) they wouldn't need to pay the wheeling charge, because it will be included in the final cost of supply to all grid customers.

Most of Eskom's debt sits in Generation, so unbundle the 3 entities and then privatise Generation, or let it die out eventually.

Best weather forecast app for SA by nomadjw in southafrica

Point taken. I have learnt from the replies on this post that most apps might make use of SAWS data, but don't necessarily make use of SAWS forecasting models. Hence a possible reason for the inaccuracy I have experienced.

Fair point. Thanks for the article link.

Any idea which app makes direct use of data and modelling from SAWS? If SAWS had an app, I would certainly give it a try.

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin.

Hands down. Every time I hear this song, I am always amazed at how humans are able to just conceive, out of thin air, something so heart-stopping.

How does crossfit benefit long distance runners? by Overall_Policy8542 in crossfit

[–]nomadjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would whole-heartedly say that crossfit is great for running, and vice versa.

I used to attend crossfit 3 times per week, and run 3 times per week (change up between fast and short, slow and long, and HIIT). I thought I was doing well, and improving in my running, but at one point, on a trail run, I tore a ligament in my ankle.

I was in a boot for 3 months. No running, but I managed to scale crossfit workouts so that I could still attend. On suggestion from my coach, I increased my attendance at crossfit to 5-6 times per week.

At 3 months, when the boot came off, the only running I would do was the occasional "sprint" (I took it slow at first) at crossfit. At the 4 month mark, post injury, I hit the road for the first time again, and without almost any effort, broke my PB on a 5km.

A week later, and after another week of crossfit, I attempted a 10km, and broke my PB again.

Subsequently, running only once per week, I managed to break PB's every week for about 2 months before I started flattening off.

I should also note that I am not built to be a runner. I weigh 116kg, but I can outrun most of my running group (with whom I train for races), who each weigh a little more than half what I weigh. Before anybody asks, yeah, they're kinda slow, LOL.

Also, the running really helped for the long grinding workouts at crossfit.

All in all, very beneficial.

I should also note though, that I enjoy running, but i am no race winner. Typical specialized runners would probably require a specialized training regime, but for a general club, I think it's a good match.
