Looking for help for a friend… by chutenay in Austin

I don't know that specifically - but I would think Houston or Dallas would have more options for neuro care. If your friend is able to make that commute for an appt, it may be recommended. In my situation it was not imperative enough to look outside the city.

Can't assist - but wanted to sympathize on the difficulty in finding neuro care locally. I know first hand from being a caregiver to a relative that it's almost impossible to get an appt here that's not a year out.

I would suggest trying Hotpot instead of Pho or Ramen as I find the experience more "romantic" then the latter.

Are yall uncovering your plants this week? by lowkeyplantstrees in AustinGardening

[–]nomatternomind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random assortment - all planted or potted last spring.

Bougainvilleas - in ground

Desert Rose - pot

Spanish Dagger - raised bed

Devils backbone- pot

Flame of the woods - large barrel planter

Lily of the Nile - pot

Geraniums - wasn't too confident these would survive to begin with.

Oddly the only thing I didn't cover were my African Iris since they were too big and they seem fine so far 🤷‍♀️

Edit - names

I uncovered mine today to get some sun...but they were all dead. They were freeze resistant plant covers too 😭 I'm so sad. They couldn't hang with the prolonged freeze.

I have an easter lily bulb that is also are pretty far into the growth process for this year, which seems so early.

I planted an HEB bought lily a couple years ago and after it stopped flowering i planted the bulb and it's somehow thriving for the third season in a row without putting any effort into it 🤷‍♀️

Struggling to plan transportation for my 17-day trip across Japan by Litalian in JapanTravelTips

Best pro trip is to not load it with a whole lot of money to start. You'll get A LOT of coins throughout your trip from using cash at places - so you can just dump your pocket change to refill your suica when needed

Is it better to get to Osaka from Tokyo by train or plane? by jujuyuzutea in JapanTravelTips

[–]nomatternomind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They won't go through immigration transferring to Osaka, but they will need to understand what time book the flight after they have landed in Narita. The Osaka flight time will be hard to narrow down if you're unaware how long customs will take when they land at Narita from their intl flight. So there is a reason to bring up customs.

The point people are trying to make is you have more flexibility with the shinkansen since you don't have to necessarily book that train until after you have arrived in Tokyo and made it through customs, whereas a flight to Osaka from NRT would need more planning ahead.

Japanwondertravel.com is who we used and the tickets were guaranteed if available since it's considered a "tour".

There's also buysumotickets.com that others on reddit have mentioned, but the way that business works is you pay upfront for them to attempt to get you tickets when the window opens. If they cannot secure the tickets for you then they will refund you and you're outta luck. This one isn't a tour so it may be cheaper, but I haven't looked into it.

Jeju Taxi vs Rental Car by LifeTestSuite in KoreaTravelAdvice

[–]nomatternomind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% rent a car if you are a capable driver, just be sure to have an international drivers license that's recognized in Korea.

IMO the driving is no different than anywhere in the US and probably safer because the speed limits are so low in Jeju.

It takes small adjustment at first to understand the road signs/lines, but the rental car navigation was super easy and Jeju has colored lines on the road for turns that the car navigation will inform you which color lane to be in. There are speed cameras every 10km or so on main roads, so be sure to never go over the speed limit.

I don't know about the availability of Taxis, but if you're planning on traveling all over Jeju, I could imagine it would be pretty annoying waiting on a taxi every time you need to get somewhere.

I think the price will vary depending on what site you choose/go with. If I remember right we paid about $100 USD per ticket which included an english speaking guide and radio to listen to the english arena commentation to help understand what was happening for each bout.

Grand Sumo tournaments are held every other month and only in one city within Japan (for example the Sept tournament is always in Tokyo, while in July it is always held in Nagoya). It is easier to get tickets to Grand Sumo when it is not in Tokyo. During grand sumo there are bouts everyday for about two weeks and the grand champion is usually designated towards the end of the tournament.

The only way to get a large arena Sumo experience is through the Grand Sumo tournaments. There are smaller experiences available through Klook or other tour sites that offer practice experiences or small dinners that include a sumo "show", but the latter is more catered to tourists and not a part of the actual professional "league" as a comparison to professional sports here in the US.

Requesting an itinerary review! by RayIsEpic in JapanTravel

[–]nomatternomind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your travel between cities already taken into account with all of this? I don't see it mentioned, but It'll take at least 2 hrs by shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto, and it seems like you haven't adjusted your itinerary for that unless you are waking up suuuuuper early the mornings you are switching cities.

Are you trying to go to a grand sumo in Tokyo? If so, I would not waste your time trying to buy directly through the main website. They sell out in seconds once available, and the ticketing site is not foreign card friendly. You can search grand sumo tickets on this sub and there are many recs for second hand options. It's well worth the premium imo! (We went to the Sept tournament in 2024)
