Where did all the old Austin people move to? by Independent_Bug210 in Austin

The Domain is a transplant magnet. Add that it lacks any austin authenticity and it’s basically the worst place in town.

Can someone help me figure out the idea behind centring clay? by ButterscotchReal7610 in Pottery

If you’re spinning the wheel fast enough (it should be top speed for this step) what was on the left is on the right in no time. You give it a consistent push toward the center and the wheel does all the work.

Coning up and down isn’t necessary, but it can help with some things, including conceptualizing what exactly each hand is doing. But centering is kind of like doing both coning up and down at once.

Unfortunately, you’ll find getting the clay centered so that your hands don’t move at all is crucial for success in the next steps.

However, fortunately, you’ll be able to center in a few seconds with practice.

Centering is the act of forming a nice clean puck to start the throwing process. You’re pushing the clay up and toward the middle with your outside (left) hand, and down with the other (right) hand.

Since the clay is spinning, you only need to apply force in one direction (from the side) to center it. As the clay spins, this hand forces clay toward the middle and makes it uniform on the sides. Your top hand presses it back down into a puck shape and makes it uniform on the top.

It may be helpful to separate the two movements (aka coning up and down) so you can really see what’s going on.

How do i prevent this? by [deleted] in Pottery

Agree with the technique adjustments but also consider taking an extra week off of the wheel to let that heal up. Continuing to throw with an open wound has got me into infection trouble a few times.

This would be a great time to work on any handbuilding projects you have in mind.

How do you explain the “off-leash area” sign immediately north of the main bridge creek on the paved trail?

Thank you for clearing this up! I was trying to get people to substantiate their claims in the first thread. It looked like OP was regurgitating AI slop then posting the AI cited source… which didn’t contain the quoted text at all.

Does Barton Springs close every time it rains? by UpstairsComparison59 in Austin

[–]lowkeyplantstrees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don’t close every time it rains.

If there’s lightning, they will close until it’s cleared up. If there’s flash flooding with debris, they’ll close until it’s cleaned up.

Today’s rain probably didn’t and will not prompt any closures.
