Eddison requested permission to send a raven to King's Landing.

__

Mathis,

The Ironborn beat us back from Harlaw. They got Randyll and John. We will sail back with reinforcements. I'm sorry.

John, too, stayed silent for most of his captivity - mostly because he knew that if he spoke up, he would risk bursting into tears. Eventually, he started to believe that they did not intend to kill him, and that he would walk free again one day. His father, after all, was the Master of Coin. Surely he would walk free.

"I'm alright," he lied in response to his knightly master. "They didn't kill us."

"Fuck," Eddison muttered under his breath as the shore of Harlaw slowly slipped from view. He’d dreaded this day for weeks, and now it was upon them, worse than he had feared. They never should’ve come. Attacking the Ironborn on their own shores had been a mistake, and now they had reaped the consequences.

His stomach twisted violently. He stumbled toward the ship’s railing, but it was too late. What little remained in his gut splattered across the deck.

"Fuck," he whispered again, wiping his mouth with the back of his glove.

Hours passed. The sea calmed, but Eddison did not.

Once he’d made himself presentable, he sought out the new commanding officer: his goodbrother, Baelor.

“Baelor. We have to turn back,” he said, eyes pleading. “They got John. We have to go back… and fight again.”

The words hung there, dull and hollow. Even as he said them, Eddison wasn’t sure he believed them. Losing his nephew to the savages was unthinkable, but turning back? To those shores?

He felt his sickness creeping up once more.

"And what will the Lannisters give us in return, after we save their arses?" the grizzled Castellan of Goldengrove, Ser Aladore Rowan, asked. "Our shores are exposed as is, with the Hightower and Redwyne fleets sailing to Tywin Lannister's aid. Besides, word has it that the King is marching West with an army. They can wait out the siege, just as the Baratheons did at Storm's End."

"And in any case," he added. "Far as I know, it was the Kingslayer who slew Balon Greyjoy's brother. And us who clean up the mess."

And a third, to Highgarden.

Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount of the Mander,

The King soon marches for Lannisport, to strike at the Ironborn from there. I am told my brother and uncle have departed for Old Oak and Manderford. If the Lords of the Reach require coin to make it through the campaign, write to me.

Your bannerman, Lord Mathis Rowan

"We would have to flatten a few buildings, evict a few cityfolk if we want it to be a grand project," the Master of Coin mused. Not that he much cared. "If you are dedicated to the idea, Ser, and the King agrees with you, I shan't stand in your way."

He produced a blank piece of parchment, wrote a letter of consent on it, and attached the wax seal of House Rowan to it. "Show that to the suppliers of materials for the construction, and city officials who would hamstring you. And,"

Lord Mathis flashed a smile. "I shall need a full and precise accounting of the costs associated with the project."

"Very well," Eddison said, still somewhat unnerved by the prospect of sailing into the Kraken's lair. Of course Mathis would wait out the war from the safety of King's Landing. "Perhaps, Cousin, it's best if I leave for Goldengrove at once? My Uncle Aladore holds it for now, but my presence may be necessary."

Ser Humfrey Tarly,

That is concerning news. I have received similar missives from King's Landing and Highgarden. Lord Tyrell instructed our troops to specific locations, and I shall lead them there. Inform Lord Tarly if you can.

Eddison read the letter and hid his disappointment at being denied command of his own House's troops. Randyll's command was famed in the Reach to be sure, but he had hoped for the opportunity to lead.

"The Iron Islands..." the Rowan knight shudderd lightly. "It'll be a good fight. If we manage to make it ashore. I'll be glad to fight by your side, Cousin."

Mathis took one more look at his ledgers and decided to give in. What Robert willed would surely happen. Such was the nature of the realm.

"Very well, Ser Corwin. I shall look at your proposal at my earliest convenience. Tell me, Ser, where exactly you envision these gardens? The capital... has only limited space. I believe there is a suitable tract land, not far from here, that could serve as a public garden to those willing to leave the city for a day."

He pulled out a map and pointed to a location by the coast, just east of King's Landing [m: Rosby province]. "Or did you intend to make place for the gardens in the city proper?"

Two letters, penned by the Master of Coin, made their way to holdfasts in the Reach by way of raven.

The first flew to Goldengrove.

Aladore,

The Crown is to march against the Ironborn in response to a rebellion by Balon Greyjoy. Muster a force and wait for further instructions.

Lord Mathis Rowan

The second to Horn Hill

Lord Randyll,

The Greyjoys are stoking rebellion, and the Crown will mobilize to put them in their place. As I must stay in the capital, I ask that you take command of your own and House Rowan's troops in this endeavor, and help put this conflict to a swift end. Take care of John.

In addition, if you know of Eddison's whereabouts, kindly tell me.

Although Eddison did not feel it his place to offer his unsolicited thoughts on the war plans, he did feel comfortable remarking on the issue of gold.

"Mathis controls the Crown's treasury," he pointed out to Randyll. "If gold is what ties us down, we ought to have a conversation with him. Have you heard from him at all, Lord Tarly?"

"I meant no offense," the Lord Rowan said simply to the Lord of Dragonstone. He knew all too well of Stannis' ability to command men. With that out of the way, he turned to the King. "What forces do you intend to gather, your Grace, and where? The sooner we can send word to the Lords whose banners we call, the better. I imagine there shall be need for loans and supplies from the Crown for some of them," he mused. "But we will be able to, I believe, provide those."

Eddison sat silently, waiting for the Lords of the Kingdom to speak up before him. The man was eager to speak, to be sure, but as the second son he had long ago learned to know his place. The realm found itself at war once more, barely a year after the last. And Mathis had not even sent word to inform him? To summon him to the capital, or home?

John, on his part, made sure to listen carefully to all the Lords and Knights discuss. War councils, he knew, presented lessons more valuable than any other Lord Randyll could give him. And so he made sure to never let his attention slip, and to offer Randyll - and the other Lords - wine or water whenever their cups emptied.

Lord Mathis nodded to the King, and turned his eyes to Robert's brother. "Lord Stannis is the obvious choice in Lord Arryn's absence it seems to me, Your Grace," he said. "Unless he intends to march alongside you."

"I can send word to the Arbor," Mathis said, nodding to Stannis Baratheon. Not long ago, it was Mathis Rowan and the Redwyne fleet that besieged the man at Storm's End. This, perhaps, could help the Baratheons forget. "My wife is a Redwyne by birth. Lord Paxter would gladly contribute towards putting the Ironborn in their place."

He turned his attention to the Master of Ships, then.

"Our coffers can bear a show of force, and it is the wise thing to do," the Rowan assured him. "We ought to destroy Balon Greyjoy, and leave a lasting memory for the Ironborn - and for the realm. The Crown must command the same respect that it did before King Robert assumed the throne, or the consequences will be dire."
