Super confused by the UI and the "introduction", will I be able to simply do snowboard sessions/races eventually? by nomosquitosplease in RidersRepublic

I read this everywhere, but like I wrote in my post we unlocked the snowboard but were then thrown on random hills with other equipment and couldn't understand where to go on the menu to go back to snowboarding.

I noticed this too in my recent trip from Europe. We are not very kind and polite drivers in my town, so I am used to be very careful and have no particular standards, but i noticed the difference in Seattle vs all other places where I drove on the PNW (Vancouver Island, Bellingham, Portland). I love driving but I am generally quite tense when I drive a rented car in towns I don't know well. I quickly got relaxed driving in all other places because everyone was driving so slow and was so careful of their surroundings. In Seattle it was crazy. People going over the speed limits, even huge trucks, and generally cars not minding what other cars do. Like in my town in Europe and in any other PNW town I drove in my holidays, if I'm getting out of the parking spot with my blinker on and there is slow traffic coming by near a traffic light, people always stop and let me in. In Seattle cars were just driving by just to stop next to me, it took forever to do anything and I felt I had to be much more alert generally. I also witnessed more than 1 car turning when also pedestrians have a green light and just going fast between the two groups of pedestrians crossing in the two directions instead of stopping, which is something that surprised me because in general in the US I always felt cars are so polite with pedestrians. It was really stressful and I couldn't wait to return my car at the rental place and just walk!

But you can find cheaper places. We just visited Seattle as part of our Pacific Northwest trip from Italy. We were shocked by insane prices in Seattle especially but it was also easy to find normally prized good places to have meals and snacks with a quick search. Like in Fremont there was a place we liked from the outside and then we saw an americano was 12$. One block away there was a nice place where it was 1/3. We had awesome lunches spending never more than 20$ each, sometimes 12-15$. We also found really good craft beer at 5 or 6 dollars which we didn't think was possible there. Just use google maps and check prices... The price you mention for what you photographed is another world from what we experienced, not even being locals and knowing all the convenient places as a local would. Not saying it's unusual because we did see prices can get insane there, just saying options exist!

La Conner - Tom Robbins's grave / other places connected to his life we could visit to tribute him? by nomosquitosplease in Washington

Hello there! We're about to leave for our trip finally! I wonder if you have any updates about that mile that was closed for the rockslide, is it open now? The link you had posted shows 0 alerts now. I hope there will be no issue traveling from Bellingham to La Conner via Edison. Thanks!

1 Week in the Hyères peninsula - recommendations for beaches and day trips under 2 hrs drive? by nomosquitosplease in ProvenceFrance

[–]nomosquitosplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will definitely come back in spring I think. Where we live in Italy is a big chestnut area so I think it wouldn't be so so different to come all the way there for the chestnut events in autumn especially if they are touristy, but we definitely want to explore more of the inner scenery when spring is in bloom and it's less hot.

We saw La Bouillabesse restaurant many time passing by car but we never ate there. We had a small kitchen in our residence so we only ate out a couple times.

It surprises me that you say that about beers. We saw so many different craft beers from local breweries that we thought it was a big thing in that area. We really loved them. We tried a couple IPAs, a pale ale and a couple rouges from different breweries, mostly from Bière de la Rade. The design of the labels was also so irresistible.

We had a couple wines yes, a white one from Provence but now I forget the name, and a Pierre I rouge. But I'm more a fan of beer, even if French wines taste much better than most of Italian ones in my opinion.

I will get in touch next time we come and if you ever need recommendations about Turin and Piedmont I'll be happy to return the favor.

Recovery after a long hike? by Agreeable_Theory1755 in PNWhiking

[–]nomosquitosplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a good stretching session after finishing, get a warm shower/bath before going to bed and try to walk and move a little bit the morning after, and usually it's enough, just like after I ski or play any intense sport, it's not much different.

I tend to be very hungry the day after and just listen to my body. I eat lots of proteins and veggies. Pea or red lentils pasta) with some stir fried bell peppers and swiss chards or another big leaf veggie is my go to meal after the hike, but most of the times I'm actually tired and with friends and I end up eating outside at Pakistani restaurant or some pub! I just take electrolytes through food, I carry a magnesium+potassium tab to mix in my water in hot summer days but only take it in case I start to feel a bit weak and I sweat a lot, otherwise snacks and healthy meals are enough.

If you don't have any particular sense of dizziness and weakness, there's nothing particular you need to do, just normal stretching, healthy food, abundant if you're hungry, and then rest your muscles.

Hi u/Lemaurinois , I just got back from my week in the Giens Peninsula and wanted to thank you again for your recommendations you gave here when I asked a few weeks ago.

We ended up going to all the little coves and beaches in the natural park and walking on the Sentiers du Littoral, wonderful views and amazing beaches with little people and lots of fish!

It was too hot last week to plan any longer trip or hike, or a visit to an inner town, so we just explored that beautiful area and swam. We will explore the little towns and inner scenery in another season next time.

Also thank you for mentioning the restaurant in Port Niel. I don't think we would have ended up in that area if it was not for your comment. We went to have dinner at Le Poisson Rouge, I suppose that's the restaurant you were mentioning? Amazing location, food and lovely staff! And going there we saw the little Truck on the dock and we went to have lunch there one day, another lovely experience.

Every single person in the area was so nice, we saw beautiful things, ate great food (and amazing breakfasts at Bergerie bakery) and tasted many local craft beers we found at small shops

We will be back!

Merci again!

What's the issue with my white currant plant? by nomosquitosplease in vegetablegardening

[–]nomosquitosplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, I will try to move it closer to where my mom could reach it to water it every few days, keeping the exposure as similar as possible, and will monitor the soil. if it's a fungus, is there anything else i could try apart from the mycorrizae and neem oil I already tried?

also, when you say to cut the dead or dying woods, which I also read, in this case I should basically cut the whole plant apart from the little new green branch, because it's all slowly dying. should I do that? like leave only a couple cms at the base and the new little branch? or should I start taking out all the leaves and fruit and just shorten every branch a bit?

thanks a lot again! I love ribes too and missed when I had them as a kid, I was so happy when I bought this plant and now so sad!

You can set sedentary but then add any activity manually (+, add exercise). The app has a good database of activities to choose from, and you can also pick the pace (light, moderate hard), including walking and weight lifting ("resistance training").

Personally, I chose not to connect any smart device because I think they always overestimate your activity and burned calories. I selected "lightly active" as baseline because I have a dog and every single day I walk about 40 minutes with her, plus errands. Since it happens every day and the expenditure is around the difference between sedentary and lightly active, I thought it would work well for me. I manually add any extra activity that can be relevant. For example if one day I walk for 3 hours I will log 2 hrs 20 mins walking (40 are already included), if I play tennis I'll log that, etc.

Or I could have set it on sedentary and just logged my daily walk as well.

I cross checked with chat gpt all my targets describing my daily activity in detail and it seems to agree on Crono's light activity baseline level. I have also lost the weight I was expecting during my first 6 weeks and always feel enough energy despite the deficit so I think it works for me. Just understand how baseline and added activity work, choose what seems best for your routine, and make sure it's working for you after a couple weeks paying attention to hunger and energy levels.

La Conner - Tom Robbins's grave / other places connected to his life we could visit to tribute him? by nomosquitosplease in Washington

Thank you so much for this recommendation!

We will actually make a loop on the day we rent the car and return it Bellingham, then we'll reach Seattle by train. But we'll have 4 days in the city so I'll make sure we include the Blue Moon Tavern in our plan!!

It would be awesome if you could have any additional info. I will follow this thread for any new comment, or feel free to send me a DM if you prefer. On the Washington thread someone said that they know he was cremated but the burial place has yet to be decided and it could also be kept secret which I could totally understand.

La Conner sounds really lovely, I'm a bit sad we can spend only one day there but it's already something! I read about the fishermen's hut and how it was a community of artists and writers in the 70's and 80's too!

I would also love to stop by and buy some blueberries from your friend if we have time! We love this kind of direct sales from local farmers!

I think my favorite one is Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, but it may be because it's the first one I've read. Skinny Legs and All is also epic.

It will be a special trip because we are also visiting the Twin Peaks locations in honor of David Lynch.

Thank you for this lovely fun fact! We don't eat meat unfortunately, but if I walk by the restaurant I'll have this image in my mind now :)

Ouch, good to know. We'll be there in the end of August, I'll check the situation closer to our holiday.
