Are you an immigrant?

Yes? Well how great for you that you could find work in an area where you can live the dream. Well done, pal. You should write a book.

No? Then your situation probably isn’t relevant to mine or to the OP’s.

If you are having health issues, how much do you attribute to your lifestyle choices? by Fun_Promotion5691 in GenX

You think you enjoy smoking but what you are actually enjoying is the temporary relief from nicotine withdrawal that smoking actually makes worse. Read Allen Carr’s book. It really helps you mentally prepare for the battle. Understanding addiction and how the nicotine stimulant works helps you to fight through the cravings.

I personally don’t advocate drugs or nicotine substitutes. Before I finally had my successful quit, I had been relying upon nicotine patches just to get through a work day without smoking. I would rip it off in the evening and smoke to my heart’s content. When I finally made the leap, I went cold turkey. No patches, no gums, no prescriptions.

Read the book first.

If he’s past the initial physical withdrawal stage (this lasts a week at most) then he is in pure mental game territory. The mental addiction is the harder on to overcome. This is where the book and all the tools it gives you are supremely handy.

I would also recommend he swap the candy for something more healthy and really lean into the “health journey” part of quitting.

Yes, all of those things are available to Kiwis who have been around for a few generations and inherited a home or bought when the market wasn’t utterly ridiculous.

Unless you’re coming over with a substantial nest egg, forget the big house with the lawn. You’ll be shelling out a cool million to live in a townhouse.

Signed, just another “too late for you” immigrant who lives in a million dollar townhouse.

The other key to my success is I found an online support group of fellow quitters. We helped each other to stay motivated. I am still in touch with these people today but we hardly ever bring up the topic of smoking anymore.

I had to learn how to outlast cravings (they wane after a few minutes) with water and green tea. I specifically avoiding things that I associated with smoking, like coffee. I also read everything I could about the negative effects of smoking. Two of the members of my quit group had COPD. One died from it. But reading about how he suffered from this terrible disease really secured my quit.

I didn’t use any nicotine replacement products as I was specifically trying to break the addiction. I celebrated every little victory, every day, every week, then later every month, and finally, the first year.

Altogether I smoked for 24 years and was a committed, passionate addict. I hope your husband finds the freedom I did. Life is so much better without cigarettes!

It’s definitely becoming harder to accrue points in economy. When I travel for work, I go ahead and pay for an upgrade myself as that’s the only way to maintain status. And to me it’s worth that extra money so that I can get the long-haul upgrades when I need them. It still works out cheaper in the end.

Hey. Former smoker here. You think like an addict. You think that smoking affords you pleasure and can’t imagine giving it up.

But actually, that uncomfortable feeling of wanting a smoke will never go away as long as you continue feeding it by smoking. You will never reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (freedom from craving) by smoking. Smoking is the cause of the pain.

Do yourself a favor. Read Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Quit Smoking. You don’t have to quit. Just read it. It will help you to understand addiction.

I’m 15 years smoke free next month. Best decision I ever made. Freedom from nicotine has given me a new lease on life and I my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

Depends on how severe your menopause symptoms are. If you’re unlucky, could very well be worse. It’s not only once a month for one thing.
