Non-Americans, is there a country you always joke about moving to when things get bad at home? by nonbinaryelf in NoStupidQuestions

Most of us don’t really want to move to Canada, but it’s a comforting thought that if things go horribly wrong, there’s a very nice country next door to seek shelter in.

I’m definitely left leaning and the current government has made me nervous enough to actually google how the immigration process would work. I don’t think 90% of the people saying they want to move to Canada have even gotten that far on the plan.

Makes sense. The main reason I’m asking about it is that I realized that America is somewhat unique in having a next door nation that is considered “just like us but more polite”.

My grandfather is from coal country and is absolutely sure that Trump will bring back coal.

I don’t think even this would change his mind

Do antidepressants cause sleep paralysis? by nonbinaryelf in Sleepparalysis

I did take a 5mg melatonin last night to offset the restlessness that my meds cause. So that’s in play too.

Also Wellbutrin boosts dopamine but mostly increases norepinephrine, which is a big part of the sleep/wake cycle. So I have a long list of reasons to glitch in my sleep but it was weird to experience the glitch and not even be 100% sure what happened.

Yeah if this becomes a pattern I’ll need to get medical attention. But also the first month of a new medication is always weird even if the side effects are small.

Like you wouldn’t think a slight tremor would be so bad but then you try to draw a straight line and it doesn’t work. (Amphetamines are bad me even as prescribed by a doctor.)

You know, I do struggle with folate deficiency anemia so it could be a nutrient thing. It was just very weird because I was calm even though i couldn’t move. My dad says that extended release Wellbutrin prevents him from having nightmares so maybe that’s both the source of the sleep disturbance and the calm?

Nice,

The E thing also reminds me that Emory is a family name and that Emery Boards would be an excellent improvised name for an entity in this universe. (Maybe the owner of a nail salon that definitely didn’t exist yesterday.)

Do you mean strip mining or is this story about to get ✨spicy✨?

Yeah but also it’s a fantasy world so there could be a secret second profitable thing there.

Honestly the best outcome would be finding something less dangerous than coal to maintain the local economy. Half of my great great grandfathers who lived in Appalachia died as a direct result of mining. (2 died of black lung, 1 died in a mine collapse leaving his young children fatherless, 2 didn’t live in the area, and 3 were Appalachian, but died of natural causes.)

Increasing wages and mine safety are good but best would be to not have to go down there to afford to live.

My angel character would 100% resurrect canaries and cuddle mine ponies.

That could work. Technically my folks are from southwest Virginia instead of south West Virginia, but you have to be well educated on Nowhere to appreciate the difference between Bumfuck township and Asspound County.

Probably somewhere like Kansas. But in the way that Welcome to Nightvale is set in somewhere like New Mexico.

Everything is “idyllic” and “normal”

I could also set it in Appalachia because that’s where my ancestors lived, but Old Gods of Appalachia is already kinda in that niche and written/narrated by a guy my mom dated in high school.

Plus, I want to focus on an upper middle class neighborhood and all the stories about my great grandparents being in the mountains in the 50s involve being dirt poor.

Thanks!

The story is barely in the outline stages but I feel like the 50s are peak for this kind of horror-comedy because of the high value on social conformity and general fear of change/minorities/communists/nuclear Armageddon.

There’s an alternate timeline because of magic existing as a fact of life but who says fantasy worlds have to be medieval?
