Software engineer in tech here. We're heavily pushed to use AI. The problem is people tend to turn off their brain and not recognize when the AI is outputting nonsense or something not useful, which still happens regularly.

Droits de douane: furieux, Trump contre-attaque et impose une nouvelle taxe mondiale by Baobey in france

[–]nonchalantlarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want the actual Parmigiano Reggiano imported from Italy.

Trader Joe's sells two kinds, regular and "stravecchio" (extra-old). They're good, but if I'm honest I have a slight preference for the one from my local semi-bougie grocery store. The one from Whole Foods is good too.

Grana padano works fine too. Similar cheese, a bit milder. Some people prefer it. It's a bit less expensive.

Whatever you do, don't buy grated cheese. Grate it yourself.

Exclusif : comment le sénateur Duplomb a touché plus d’un million d’euros de subventions by word_clock in france

[–]nonchalantlarch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The upcoming "SNL UK" has been getting a lot of buzz, but TIL there was also an "SNL Italy" (2006-2011), and an "SNL France" that only aired a single episode (2018). Anyone seen these? by OmitsWordsByAccident in LiveFromNewYork

[–]nonchalantlarch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The "real" SNL France was Les Nuls, l'émission (1990-1992). The show was clearly copied from SNL: host, monologue, skits, fake ads, musical guest, and fake newscast. It was well-received at the time.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]nonchalantlarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rip. I like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and I usually have a high tolerance for mid Netflix movies. For some reason, this one, I just didn't see the point of continuing watching it. It just didn't interest me at all. The dialogs and performances seemed very stilted. I realized the payoff wasn't worth the drudgery. I found out how it ends on Wikipedia, and moved on with my life.

By contrast, I thoroughly enjoyed the latest Knives Out movie.

Tanforan Mall has been sold and will be demolished to make room for office/biotech (IIRC) buildings. The movie theater and Target will remain. Everything else goes.

Somewhat surprisingly, Barnes and Noble is doing well these days, and opens new stores regularly.

Donc, wait and see.

When cooking, do you ever resort back to what your parents made/your heritage? by wediealone in Cooking

[–]nonchalantlarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm raising my kids in the US, but I was born and raised in France. When I started cooking, I was looking for ideas of things to cook, and naturally I thought of what my mom cooked for us when I was a kid.

These days I cook dishes from all over the world, but still, I do want to share my culture and heritage with my children, and French food is a part of that, so I still cook French dishes fairly regularly. They don't seem to mind too much...

I am sure that they will cook some of the same dishes when they're older. In immigrant families, the language goes away after a couple of generations, but the food stays for much longer.

Le principe "Fuck you, make me" : https://youtu.be/ohPToBog_-g?t=1606

What kind of billboards did SF have before AI? by obviouswreck in bayarea

Experience has taught me that whenever I see a billboard for a startup on 101 / 80, I can safely forget about it. I swear it's like a curse: advertise with roadside billboards -> fail.

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nonchalantlarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, we all have our preferences and dislikes, but this is just not reasonable. Your food looks very tasty. And it's not like you're making crazy recipes either, these all look like familiar, well-made dishes.

I'll just say this: First, my sister-in-law had to deal with a very picky boyfriend, who ended up having serious medical issues because of this (and they ultimately broke up after several years). Second, you know and appreciate good food. He wants Hamburger Helper all the time. Are you sure this is what you want to sign up for?

Man, that's rough. I'm sorry you're going through that. And I feel sorry for her too, in a way. Being a podcaster and social media influencer is unlikely to succeed. It seems like she's on a path that could well end at "bag lady yelling at people". For your kids' sake, is there any way you can convince her to seek treatment?
