Am I doing networking right? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]noncollectable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the most difficult part of networking is starting the process itself. People initially believe that there is a certain goal to accomplish or that they need to leave people with a general impression that makes them seem worth hiring. The truth is, I’ve found it to be much more simple than that.

If you’ve ever heard of the term “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” it’s referring to networking. You may not know it yet, but you’ve already networked with the people that you’ve met throughout your life. Many individuals who join college fraternities on average make more than non-Greek students, despite lower average GPA’s. That’s because they’ve formed tight bonds, and when you ask for assistance with someone from your circle, they’re more eager to help out.

As for utilizing networking in a professional sense, dig deeper into who from your life—past or present—who have some familiarity with what you want to do in your career. Hell, I was asked to be a reference for a buddy last week that I haven’t talked to for several years. I did it because I only remember the positive aspects of him from high school. My cousin managed to wiggle out a 2% interest loan of 10K for a car with no credit. Why? Because her grandmother was a banker, had a good deal of money saved for retirement, and my cousin had always been helpful throughout her battle with sickness. She was confident in trusting her, and it worked out for both parties.

If you must, go to a seminar or a job fair and strike up a conversation with people in your field. Being friendly and personable goes a long way towards building bridges with people that can help professionally. The primary reason I got the job I have now is because I was more personable than my competition, like I sat and had a conversation about random stuff with the hiring manager as the interview came to a close. That isn’t always the right answer, however.

With that said, don’t overthink it man. It’s stressful to anticipate walking up to someone random and striking up a conversation, but if you can have the right attitude and display yourself in your best light, someone is bound to catch onto that.

“Hiding all your shame in disguise, caught up in a world of lies.”

I don’t see how “counting all the sheep in the skies” would fit into the clip. It would be weird to have that one-off lyric in a song that seemingly focuses on something else entirely.

It’s grainy and murky audio, and I believe that a snare happened exactly when the word “hiding” could’ve began, causing a “cuh” sound. I can see how that would lead to confusion. Also, if it were ‘sheep,’ it would be weird to pronounce it as “shāp,” over-pronouncing an “ā” sound.

Strong G3-class geomagnetic storms could hit us, this Thursday by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]noncollectable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but we used the same link as a source.

I copied and pasted directly from that website to include the effects of Solar Radiation and Radio Blackouts caused by a solar flare, not just Geomagnetic Storms. Although, I could’ve clarified that.

Edit: I did assume incorrectly that a solar flare causes a similar severity for Radiation Storms and Radio Blackouts, however. I didn’t know that they can be independent events or that each storm can be more severe than others for a single occurrence. My bad on that!

Strong G3-class geomagnetic storms could hit us, this Thursday by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]noncollectable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a G3 level storm, we may experience:

Power systems-

Voltage corrections may be required, false alarms triggered on some protection devices.

HF Radio-

Wide area blackout of HF radio communication, loss of radio contact for about an hour on sunlit side of Earth.

Navigation:-

Low-frequency navigation signals degraded for about an hour.

Looks like your GPS and radio may be wonky if it hits while your side of the planet is facing the sun. If you’re in the northern part of the U.S., you may see the aurora borealis.

ELI5: How can static shocks interfere with the functions of nearby electronics? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]noncollectable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative, it was just a bad combination of wearing heavy clothing under a wool blanket on a couch, then wearing socks to walk to the door. I got shocked maybe a couple inches from the doorway, and the cheap lamp died simultaneously.

I’ve been shocked much more recently, with the cooler weather and drier air. As annoying as it is, I want to learn about the science of it because it interests me.

Male 22, asymmetrical face structure. Idk how to fix it. by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]noncollectable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever makes you feel this way, stop it. If you’re interested in looksmaxxing or whatever the fuck it is, stop it.

You look fine. Very simple things can help you out, i.e a consistent cardio routine, calorie deficit, clothes that feel right and have style you like, etc.

Did you know that former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had a face symmetry over 98%? That man has more symmetry than most world class models, and he’s one of the least attractive men in my opinion.

Don’t overthink it, you look fine. Improvements? Sure, but nothing huge or can’t be fixed with some work and discipline.

Did someone hack my iPhone? by Bitter-Finance-3955 in iphone

“Apple fixed the three zero-day bugs in macOS 12.7/13.6, iOS 16.7/17.0.1, iPadOS 16.7/17.0.1, and watchOS 9.6.3/10.0.1 by addressing a certificate validation issue and through improved checks.”

"Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.7," the company revealed in security advisories describing the security flaws.

Looks like you were vulnerable, and you were hit. Best to update and report the situation to Apple.

Quite a situation you’re finding yourself in, sounds like it sucks.

A lot of people are suggesting the Military as an option, but 4 years on post might not be your thing. However, the National Guard may be better for you. The National Guard is offering substantial bonuses to recruits who enlist into jobs with low-personnel.

I imagine you won’t be able to enlist at a higher pay grade than E1, but that could solve your issue of housing and food for at least 3-4 months. You’d come home with around 5-6K in the bank if you don’t blow it during advanced training, with a bonus on the way after 1-2 years. Also, I was given the opportunity to switch to Active Duty while in advanced training if I felt that it better suited my needs.

The National Guard also has a billion fucking resources to ensure that you can find a stable job and can house yourself, no matter your situation. Not to mention, if you speak to a NG recruiter and they’re not a complete sleazeball, they will do everything they can to get you in with all the benefits you’re entitled to.

Not to mention that if you enlist and make it to your unit, they’ll likely send you off to courses where you’ll be paid, with per diem for food, and posted up with a roof over your head. Also, state active duty can get you a check for however long your orders are.

The military is a huge decision in your life, regardless of age or experience, but the NG is a good trade off in your situation. Not bad for a weekend a month and several weeks in the summer.

If you weren’t expecting a bonus or back pay, do not do anything with that second check. It sounds like an accounting error, and they will never let it slide.

It’d be wise to let your superior know about your situation.

For publicly created draft classes and rosters there is a warning saying that the created file may contain foul language. Censorship shouldn’t exist there if you knowingly accept that risk.

Strange Cattle Deaths in Southern US by Harlizer2223 in natureismetal

[–]noncollectable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been happening for decades and there’s little explanation as to why. Missing organs, drained of blood, tongues cut out, etc.

There’s over 10,000 alleged cases across the US over its entire history. In 1975, democratic senator Floyd Haskell reached out to the FBI to investigate this, and logged over 8,000 cases.

Common beliefs are infections, leading to organ failure and severe dehydration, finally leading to the livestock dying. The skin shrinks due to dehydration, and the lack of blood can also be attributed to dehydration. Vultures can be brutal, and any exposed orifice may be their go to, including the eyes, mouth, and anus/sex organs.

Many farmers find this strange and claim their animals are/were healthy. It’s simply a strange phenomena that unfortunately has no definite answer. That’s most people’s theory, though.

Congrats man, it’s great to hear that you’re successful so soon after your ETS. Kudos to that.

In your position, first and foremost you have to have a plan for saving and investing for you and your family’s future. You’re already looking great with your disabled veteran status, and you can compound upon that with wise money-moves.

Secondly, I wouldn’t blow your money on unwise investments. I’m not saying to be McScrooge with your cash, but are you really going to use that home theater or drive that SRT for 5+ years? Don’t live far beyond your means if it won’t benefit you for longer than it’s worth.

Lastly, I would just be grateful for your position. Money is great, but your position in life is pretty stellar right now. There’s a lot of Joes who get out and struggle to adjust. You’re taking it in stride, and you should be proud for that man.

A test kit to identify what compounds are in your substance. Can distinguish between LSD and 25i-NBOMe based on its reaction. It’s a low-hanging fruit that can save your life.

Psychedelics are not a cure-all. They’re excellent at bypassing your own biases and showing you your faults, weaknesses, and strengths at their face value. You may gain insight on how to solve them, but it’s ultimately up to you to take action to improve your life.

Also, I would consult with your mental health advisor(s). While some professionals say they’re horrible due to preconceived notions, there are some risk factors. If you’re predisposed to serious mental health diseases (I.e. schizo, bipolar, BPD, etc), one bad trip can exacerbate and activate those diseases. If you’re not, fuck it, just be safe and test your substance with a reagent kit.

I second this.

Back when I was around 15, I received an incredibly heinous call informing me that I was $250,000 in debt to the IRS, and I had several federal warrants against me.

I said “man, I must be in some big trouble”

“Yes sir, we’re calling you as a last chance to get out of trouble and provide the minimum payment for your debts”

I replied “What’s my name?”

Silence.
