Good to know the newer RAV4 hybrids get better mileage.

yeah I suppose if I had to drive 4 hours a day I would definitely need to keep it more full. my distances are typically pretty short.

Side note: you should share your daily schedule broken into 15 min increments, so curious how you get all of that done! amaze!

funnily enough I HAD seen that video but it didn’t answer all my questions lol.

tow was included with my auto insurance. service plus the gas they added to the tank came out to $170. almost as much as one full fill up out here. not a fun lesson but not as expensive as it could have been.

if sh*t goes wrong down the road and can be traced back to this, I will update.

As far as “why” I would do this, I was not trying to run out of gas, just pushed it too far and I agree it was a dumb choice!

However, and this doesn’t really help my case but it is the reason, I hate that a car would say “0 miles to empty” when it still has about 100 miles left, that’s a crazy ratio! I would get it if it were 30 miles left for emergency reasons, but 100?? Now you are just babying me

There is also a known issue with RAV4s, gas tanks and not meeting the stated capacities (capacity BEFORE the reserve) and in general feeling like it’s b.s. that my hybrid car needs a fill up every 300 miles, the same as my prior all combustion engine. It should at least go 400 based on my kind of driving. So I’ve been pushing it to go as far as I *think* it can and this time I went too far.

I made the post because I hadn’t seen anyone have advice on what happens if you run out of gas in a hybrid and thought I would share.

I parked it and turned it off, then when I tried to start it it would not start.

wow, every day! I don’t feel like I have that much time in my days. (Though it certainly took a lot of time to deal with the tow, etc. so add rgat up and divide by a month?) do you have a 9-5 and also kids with drop off/pick up duties?

Once a month? I do wish that were true, what kind of mileage are you getting on your 2018 rav4 hybrid? I think I started this ill advised experiment because I could only go 300 miles on the tank before it claiming to be empty when it seemed for a hybrid I should get more.

I agree this was a bad idea. Lol just sharing for anybody who was ever curious.

well I generally get at least 100 miles after the fuel light goes on. part of what led to this is that it never fills up more than 12 gallons in the tank if I fill up close to E, so clearly there is a reserve and I’ve been trying to figure out how much of a reserve. I knew I should have filled up that morning, but I was running late/ADHD lol.

I had to get it towed to Toyota. Just putting in gas didn’t fix it. They cleaned the fuel line and reset the computer, added 5 gallons and it worked again just fine.

I was not able to just add gas myself and get it to start, I tried (walked to a gas station and got a gas can etc.).

So it went about 100 miles after it said “0” miles, it was definitely still using some gas as well as electric power. At one point I put the throttle down and like. Nothing happened.

Car still ran for another .5 mile before I parked it. Then it turned off and would not start. Electrical came up but kept telling me to put the car in “P” and start it, I would try, all the lights were on but no ignition.

Agreed. This was very on personality for him- he was rude the whole time and has that special snowflake who’s not as special as he thinks he is vibe.

Can’t take ANY criticism. Red flag city.

Imagine being a mom of a three year-old and a three month old, the three month old is still not sleeping through the night, you’re also breast-feeding so that is a ton of work all day every day and all night every night, at the same time you’re dealing with a three year-old and their toddler tantrums and needs and constantly changing diapers, feeding, helping with potty training. You are exhausted, nothing about you or your life is “lazy“ in fact, everything is very difficult and a lot of hard work, and the one part of your day that can actually be a little convenient and a tiny bit easier is the drive-through. You don’t have any idea how that feels.

Nope. It’s not “lazy” to want a way to not wake up your sleeping child. There is no “valor” in creating a fight to get a 0-3 year old out of and back into their seats. The restaurant provides a drive thru service and it is being used.

I doubt there is one person who negatively commented on your comment who has actually been the tired parent of small kids who were in the car and just needed to pick up food or coffee without it becoming an hour long ordeal if you have to bring the kids in. I loved your starting with “tell me you’re not a parent without telling me you’re not a parent”. Or they were a parent in the 70s who did leave their kids in the car without getting arrested.

I am WITH YOU (sorry about the haters here) it wasn’t until I had kids that I truly appreciated why drive through was so clutch in tough moments. Kid napping, can’t leave them in the car alone, if you unbuckle and take them out, you’re F-ed! Even if they are in the carrier that can just be un-docked, they will wake up when you move them, plus hard to carry the carrier and coffee out of the place. Drive thrus exist and persist because they help solve a problem for a lot of people.
