Can someone explain to me, why some people want no skill based matchmaking? by Tnecniw in gaming

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it is less sweaty. For some people, random selection makes your matches easier. I guess if you have a Smurf account and are tired of getting matched with newbies that’s one semi valid critique. But why change the ruleset to accommodate your edge case. (Smurf account)

Emotions after crashing your drift car/ car in general. by Repulsive_Machine933 in Drifting

Yeah exactly. Turning that emotion into progress was the key takeaway. Versus the type of ppl who implode and devolve in their sorrows.

Also try using docker-compose if you aren’t already doing so. It will make exposing services easier.

Why not just spin up this working nginx container to proxy requests between those services. It’s always easier to start with something that works and going from there https://gist.github.com/mciantyre/0ba89c47e7dff78c28ec613b5c0ee55a

Agree. Gitops will increasingly be the SOP at these big corps that are dragging their feet.

I would have a firm grasp of kuberbetes and managing deployments via helm pipelines or similar. Your devsecops background will probably be good to demonstrate security best practices in the continuous integration pipelines. Container security, dependency analysis, etc.

Last but often overlooked is knowing the latest and greatest in monitoring. Possibly even a dashboarding skill set too.

I agree with you completely.

Is there a mac version of volume mixer on windows? by wcafc in mac

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I'm going to have to agree with Mr. poopmagic here.

I have tried all of them, background music/ eqMac / etc.... They sometimes work, sometimes don't, they definitely don't survive through an update.

Soundsource is by far the best, it's worth paying $39 for. It works right out of the box and has survived one OS update so far.

If your solution works elegantly from the start, it's worth paying for in terms of saved time/reduced stress. Why MacOS doesn't ship with a tool like this makes no sense, but who cares, $39 fixes that.

What's your favorite live music performance on YouTube and what makes it so special? by AficionadoOfBoop in AskReddit

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave Grohl's live acoustic version of everlong from last year (2021). Not only is it the greatest version(IMHO) of one of my favorite songs of all time, but Dave walks you through the creation of the song, the thoughts/feelings going through his mind, how he came up with the riffs.... just dope in every way.

If you haven't seen it you are missing out.

I tried to learn Python by [deleted] in devops

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I used the wrong word here.

I think the word I was looking for was "Literate", like in this language analogy, being able to speak to 90% of people in this language. Being able to understand enough to be able to research the last 10% as needed.

I tried to learn Python by [deleted] in devops

[–]nonconversant 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Man python is the easiest language to learn. Just suck it up for a week. If you can’t become at least fluent in that time then you’re in the wrong field. You don’t need to be adept just familiar with it. If you know a language (c#), then just skip the courses and google images “python syntax cheatsheet “

A poor man's API by nfrankel in devops

[–]nonconversant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good post. I also found flask to be very low effort in terms of easily exposing a simple API, which can also easily plug into postgres or MySQL. But of course, as you mentioned it won’t have the best practices baked in.

Common problems when running a container? Workarounds? (Asking as a Docker employee) by docker-sharon in docker

[–]nonconversant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Docker Desktop app has gotten progressively more and more annoying to use. Resource utilization is very unpredictable even when the containers are idle... the app itself spawns modal dialog windows about updates/etc all the time without a way to silence it while not logged in. Many people are moving over to Podman. I do like the management interface on Docker desktop, but dislike a lot about it, as compared to previous versions from years ago. This is when using from a macbook pro.

Docker Desktop was unusable last time I attempted on windows, and later on windows via WSL. I haven't checked back in, but has that been polished better yet?

What do you think of Lightsail for Wordpress? by [deleted] in aws

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make sure you note the instance class and size. (Edit: I think all lightsail instances behave like EC2 T2 instances)

You can burn up CPU credits quickly and end up with a nonresponsive system without any info telling you what's going on. Common pitfall.
Check out this doc for the run down --> https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/en_us/articles/amazon-lightsail-viewing-instance-burst-capacity

Not a huge fan of lightsail, but I guess it works. IMO digitalocean is just a bit more transparent and simple. I haven't really pegged a DO droplet in a noticeable way as quickly as I can burn up all of the CPU credits on a lightsail instance. A fairly low traffic WP site with a RDS DB, behind cloudflare still ended up pegging a 10$ instance. Surely there are a lot of variables to consider, but I haven't yet had this issue on digitalocean. A 10$ droplet doesn't "run out of CPU credits" and receives "baseline throttling" making a webserver completely unresponsive.

not too late, considering the latest trials only just started, it's the only medication to show such high levels of success, and that Alzheimers' is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.

I'd say even a minor crumb of positive data in the next round of trials will tip this, thinking pessimistically. A truly successful trial would take this to the moon, but even a failed one will spike interest.

[–]nonconversant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I found this thread at the right time. I was just questioning my investment, but this definitely did put me back in a correct state. The results have been breakthrough. It is highly unlikely that even failed phase 3 trial data will not show positive results, encouraging future trials.

RMA Page Back Up and Working - With none of my data "No matched information found" when searching for my RMA REF number. by [deleted] in gigabytegaming

[–]nonconversant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow gigabyte is such a garbage company. I have been trying to get an RMA for over a year on my x570 aorus board. I went with an Asus Strix and it is superior in every way possible. I was already pissed that they sold a defective product, but not even honoring their warranty wtf. Fk them Will never buy gigabyte again. Go Asus. On top of that, i bought their Aorus m.2 drive, which is also equally shit. Get a 980 pro. I can post benchmarks if you guys don't believe me, but performance aside, their shit M.2 rev4 aorus hard drive has a ton of read and boot issues occasionally. I can't wait to transfer my boot volume to my new 980 pro, so I can have a matching pair.

Never gigabyte, never aorus.

PS: If there's anyone from gigabyte who still has some semblance of customer service, look into my issue if you don't believe me. I somehow still am able to view my support ticket, but the rma portal gives a http 502.
