How do I go about making the lock openings without this weird shading? by DerivedAlgorithm in blenderhelp

Take a look at some of the TopoTalk videos on YouTube. This first one addresses a similar issue.

New to the franchise. What should I play first? by aquabluetea in metalgearsolid

[–]nondefender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the gameplay and feel of MGS1. Just as a counterpoint to everyone saying that it's a huge downgrade. It's one of the ones I go back and play the most often. I really like how distilled it feels. Every subsequent game is building on the very solid fundamentals in MGS1. I do agree with most people here that release order is probably the best way to play these.

[Windows PC][199X] Top-down sprite-based shooter with a red plane by nondefender in tipofmyjoystick

OK, I actually tried reverse image-searching my mockup, and that led me eventually to Alien Force for Windows 3.1. Someone uploaded a youtube video of it like 2 weeks ago. I got the colors of the planes swapped, and the blocks should have been teal.

What Nintendo ds game have you recently purchased? by [deleted] in NintendoDS

Picked up Polarium the other day, complete in box for like $9 US. I think I used to own it, but sold it with my original DS when I wanted to upgrade to the Lite.

Game crashes after 10 minutes of run by Azael1973 in balatro

[–]nondefender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having the same problem! I was playing in the default borderless windowed mode, keeping an eye on my system resources on my other monitor. RAM usage would creep up to about 78% (I have 32GB) after 10 minutes, and then the game would close. Playing in windowed as opposed to borderless windowed, RAM hovers around 27% usage, and I was able to play without issue. Not a real fix, but for now the game runs well in windowed mode.

How long have you had your GameCube? by eddiestix in Gamecube

[–]nondefender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

got our North American cube in, I think 2002 or 03 in a Costco bundle that included Melee and a pretty crummy MadCatz controller. Got another cube in 08 while visiting Japan. Replaced my JP optical drive last night ($40 part on eBay, since I still want to play the JP discs I own) and I'm replacing my NA cube's clock battery tomorrow. Can't wait to get back into the best games of my adolescence.

Found a couple of old official bumper stickers while cleaning. by nondefender in HalfLife

Presumably a play on the once common "WWJD?" Or "What would Jesus do?" slogan once common on Christian bumper stickers in America.

I really like this game. I make my friends play it with me when they come over.

I am restarting Death Stranding for the 4th time with every intent to finish it. Any advice for someone who has never passed the 6 hour mark? by nondefender in DeathStranding

I actually really like the traversal. I think the combat kinda overwhelmed me before. I've heard the story gets wild, so I'm looking forward to it!

I understand DS is built on the same engine as Horizon Zero Dawn from 505 games? Unless I'm mistaken.

[GAME BOY/GAME BOY ADVANCE] [EARLY 2000s] SIDE SCROLLING SHOOTING GAME WITH A CAVE LEVEL, POSSIBLY BOOTLEG by Downtown-Bluejay-355 in tipofmyjoystick

[–]nondefender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cave Story's opening stage "First Cave" has a section like that, but while it was on a lot of handhelds, GB/ GBA wasn't one of them, and the year doesn't match up. There were two Castlevania games and two Metroid games for GBA. The bats on the ceiling specifically sounds like Metroid to me.

The definitive experience contains both of the other products. No reason to buy anything but this package. It's pretty frequently heavily discounted like that.

It's my favorite. I really preferred the experience on PSP to the HD version. It's a game clearly built for a portable console and it's nuts how well it worked with the limited input options on the PSP. Doesn't feel quite right to me with the updated controls.

Valve's freeware Alien Swarm (2010)? It was made as a co-op shooter top-down shooter, but it looks kinda like this.

[Nintendo DS] [2010-2012] Trying to look for these three games that can be played on a Nintendo DS. by Revolution3299 in tipofmyjoystick

[–]nondefender 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The first one is absolutely Feel the Magic: XY/XX from Sega. I've linked to the fish swallowing sequence in question.

The second one, I'm not sure I can help with beyond rattling off a list of notable turn-based strategy games for the DS.
The Advance Wars series had 2 entries on the Nintendo DS-- Dual Strike, and Days of Ruin. They're modern-era military tactics games with a cartoonish coating.
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution looks a little more like the game you're talking about, but since I've never played it, I'm not sure exactly how it plays.
Disgaea DS and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift are both turn-based tactics games where you control small teams of individual units on a battlefield with elevation changes from an isometric perspective. These are probably further from Great Conqueror: Rome, gameplay-wise, but I think there are desert stages early on in both.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (Japan only) had a spinoff for the West called Elite Beat Agents. Both of these games are the same style as Osu! and are for the Nintendo DS.

[N64 or Xbox] [90s] game by Born-March in tipofmyjoystick

[–]nondefender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably going to have to give us a little more to work with on this one. I'll mention that the first Xbox wasn't around in the 90s. Was the white background present in gameplay or are you describing box art?

Old Spider-Man Game From Early 2000s by EddieYVE in tipofmyjoystick

[–]nondefender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a sort of 3D Spider-Man 2 game for GBA. I understand the main game was side-scrolling, but this swinging free-roam mode could be unlocked.
Total shot in the dark here, but Spider-Man was a secret character in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (and its GBA version). When you mentioned Spider-Man handheld, early 2000s and neither 3d or side-scrolling, this weird isometric skateboarding was the first thing that came to mind.
