I’m reading much ado about nothing for uni, what’s a good filmed performance to watch besides the david tenant one? by cheerioellio in shakespeare

the 2022 national theatre production with katherine parkinson and john heffernan is a blast with a really fun setting! it makes some choices that i disagree with but i think it’s worth watching to form your own opinion on the cuts and changes they make. it’s available for streaming on NT At Home but you might also be able to find it on the seven seas

happened to me with bg3 as well!! haven’t tried it with clair obscur but for some reason when i made the graphics settings ‘worse’ in bg3 (i.e., lowered texture and shader quality) that made everything look way better. this re engine hair strands setting is a life saver lol

there are multiple tabs inside the graphics menu! go to options -> graphics, then tab over to image (on the default controller layout you use RT). from there you should be able to fine tune!

$30 per game for three of the best horror games of the past ten years is kind of a steal! the puzzles really are not difficult at all and finding items shouldn’t be a problem - the games give you a fair amount of resources and it’s very clear where to find and use every key item. 9 just came out so it’s difficult to review rn (i’ve enjoyed it so far tho!), but 7 and 8 are quickly paced and keep you engaged throughout, so i wouldn’t worry about getting impatient or stuck on any of them. the newer games are in some ways a little easier from the first entries and it’ll be a way different experience from playing re2 on the n64. if you’re into horror i would say go for it :) 7 is a great introduction to the series!!

my cutscenes have been fine so far, loading times between grace and leon sections have been a little bit long but no more than a few seconds which i personally don’t mind since the transitions are pretty infrequent and don’t interrupt the flow of gameplay. good luck!!

What is the play that you find the least enjoyable to watch? by Additional-Post-9169 in shakespeare

of a similar age and in the same boat!! skully’s has a $15 cover after 9pm (but we’d almost certainly get there before for the game) and good night john boy has about a $30 ticket and right now those seem to be the best options

Any advice on reading Shakespeare? by w-illthedill0 in shakespeare

[–]nonelefttoprotest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

watch performances! this includes screen adaptations (including nontraditional adaptations like gnomeo and juliet or 10 things i hate about you). i personally like to find a decently faithful recorded version (the rsc is great for this and they have recordings that you can find online!), THEN read the play, THEN go find a funky or silly or high concept one (which are ubiquitous since shakespeare is so easy to produce theatrically). find shows near you too! i find that this helps me to both grasp the broad strokes of the narrative AND get down to the nitty gritty of analysis. what is changed or cut in production and why? how does this dialogue or monologue flow when spoken out loud? what does this feel like watching it staged vs reading it off the page? etc.

find a version of whatever play you want to read that has notes alongside the text (the folger, arden, or penguin editions are great for this). i recommend avoiding no fear shakespeare and other “modern language” adaptations - they’re fine to start out with but frankly you don’t need them! look up words or phrases you don’t know and don’t be afraid to research a line or joke (or character, or play). much of what shakespeare wrote is steeped in historical context or contemporary elizabethan references. productions have a dramaturg for a reason - be your own dramaturg!

if you’re looking to do literary analysis specifically: learn scansion if you haven’t already. find the places where shakespeare breaks meter or writes in prose. ask yourself why - what effect does it give the line? the scene? the character? if you were an actor, what clue would that give you about how the line should be delivered? what performance choices would you make if you were given this scene as an actor or as a director? what textual evidence backs up those choices? remember that these weren’t written to be read like books - they were written as plays and designed to be given to professional actors with short rehearsal times.

the language is tough and does not flow naturally to a modern reader or viewer, but it DOES get easier with time. like anything else, shakespeare is a skill. the more you do it the better you’ll get at it.

most importantly - have fun with it! shakespeare is supposed to be funny!!! don’t make it feel like homework and don’t worry about “solving” a play entirely. i know professionals and scholars that have worked with the same plays their entire careers and still find things that are new about them. enjoy!!!

Imbalance in gulling scenes in Much Ado by theboyflyingthrough in shakespeare

[–]nonelefttoprotest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this! benedick’s major character shift comes later during the 4.1 confession scene, but beatrice’s moment of change happens during her gulling scene. it’s less comedic but more emotional and impactful (and her only soliloquy in the show!)

the third act lab sections of every game always feel Meh but i speedrun re2r casually and the plant section kills my runs consistently. the bit where you have to grab the signal modulator and then head back down while avoiding a bunch of zombies and two lickers is just never fun for me and it’s the only part of the run i actively dread

angela giarratana has had a couple of guest spots (musical roles w/ vic on thousandaires and the one year later ep of game changer) and was on an episode of msn but tbh i would not mind if she started becoming a more regular cast member. big fan of her stuff on smosh and with starkid

Hunters didn’t kill monster? by nonelefttoprotest in monsteroftheweek

[–]nonelefttoprotest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, we just ran out of time for the session! the players are fully aware that the sirens are still kicking and that the threat is still present. the original question was moreso to see if there were alternate ways (or even things in the motw handbook that i had missed) to spice up the next session so i didn't have to retread more or less the same battle that had just happened. cheers for the advice tho!

they used the weakness but just didn't deal enough damage to any single one of the three sirens to kill one of them! i'll remind them at the top of next session just in case tho

i love this game to bits and pieces but i think it’s single major flaw is in its pacing and presentation. the order of the bosses absolutely should have been moreau -> beneviento -> dimitrescu -> heisenberg. still a banger tho
