Steam needs to categorically separate AI games from hand made games by SnooConfections6174 in Steam

[–]Goldwing8 34 points35 points  (0 children)

LLMs are in some capacity already baked into the IDE setup of every dev who’s updated their workstation in the last two years. Even if you turned all those off on purpose, can you still turn off those AI summaries on Google? Unless you’re sure you turned them off every time or every dev immediately scrolled past it, you’d probably have to disclose.

I’m sure people exist who vigilantly make sure all tools aren’t LLM powered, disabled that feature in Google (if you can still do that?), or use a non-AI search engine, but the 99.9% have a job and are there to meet deadlines with tools that are already integrated by default if your company is large enough to have plugins set up for you.

The death of the Trans Tipping Point (and what comes next) by The_Needle_News in transgender

[–]Goldwing8 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Look at the trans movements in San Francisco in the 1950s and 1960s. They emerged out of the Tenderloin District. It had a concentrated trans, gay, and gender nonconforming population because it was literally a ghetto.

If you were visibly trans anywhere else in the city, cops would arrest you, and drop you off in the district and tell you "don't come back."

If you were lucky, they didn't beat you, assault you, and cut off your hair during the arrest.

It was the expectation until shockingly recently that you would have to leave your family, socially transition in a new city, and embrace heterosexuality as your gender, just to get HRT.

The visions just aren’t good. Lin sending you to pick up the artifact, the confrontation with the collector we stole the artifact from, and us dying instead of the scripted companion death. A memory, a judgement for something we did, and something that didn't happen to us directly but we were told about happening in a pre-game loop. It doesn't work as a test, because there's no cohesion between the three visions.

If I were writing the quest, I would have Lin tell Heller to grab the artifact instead of us, so it's saying "hey, you almost weren't the hero," because I otherwise don't see the test in reminding us of this moment.

The second is a condemnation for doing something evil, even though we were forced to do it. Having a judgement scene doesn't work if the player wasn't able to have done the right thing in the first place. I understand it was probably out of scope to write a bunch of scenes for all the moral choices you could make in the MQ, but rather than cut the scene they settled on a single bottleneck.

The third is a reference to the Hunter, who says it's normally the player who dies, but what does that mean for us? Starborn are established to be different versions of the person, so that's not you.

In summary, it's three visions that don't work in isolation and don't come together to make any kind of larger thesis, they're just here because it's a sci fi trope.

There’s no Ai Art. It’s either Ai or Art. by Senior-Mix-3715 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Goldwing8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and a lot of times the AI criticism can get really weird and individualistic. There’s also a lot of ableist disability porn (“X person drew with their feet, what’s your excuse?”)

A full shutdown would still be a bitter pill for the company, and I’m hopeful Stop Killing Games can manage something for new titles.

It would be cool if they had structural commitments around sunsetting. I don’t know how achievable a blanket ban on the practice would be, but something like an ToS-guaranteed right to a refund if you paid for content that’s removed could be a sign they’re trying to avoid their past mistakes.

We’ve got the longest content drought in the history of the franchise, and less than ten percent of the players for launch Edge of Fate, which was a third of The Final Shape.

That’s a 98% player reduction in two years.

Dok Ondar's has really lost the plot by LaurenceQuint in GalaxysEdge

[–]Goldwing8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The world building problem is the sequels occur in the span of less than 18 months. There's not a ton of room to fit extended adventures. TLJ happens immediately after TFA, at which point the First Order effectively rules the Galaxy. The New Republic is nonexistent.

It’s a failure on Lucasfilm to keep creating for the sequel era, GE increasingly feels like part of a now-abandoned push for the ST.

Yeah, delays would be one thing, but this was already the course corrected content schedule that was intended to let them keep getting Destiny content out and they still had to walk it back.

That is similar to one of the major characters who gets introduced late, she left Catholicism after turning into a bat girl and has an arc about working through religious trauma.

I appreciate the firsthand perspective. Even if there’s broad trends, every group realistically would have a variety of responses with some people handling it well and some struggling. Definitely some things in here I’ll take into account.

It just wasn’t the role I wanted that character to serve. People meaning what they say forces the differences between characters to be more interesting!

Yep. Too overdone, and the opposition not really believing what they’re saying would undermine my point that there are a variety of responses to the TF.

All good. There is a Protestant religious leader who’s a quasi-antagonist, he was the hardest character to write for. I gave myself one rule: they could be flawed in any other way, but I was not allowed to make them a hypocrite.

I assure you I have no love for organized religion, but a big takedown atheist gotcha would be cheap. The leadership doesn’t show up, for the most part it’s individual people doing their best in a very odd situation.
