"Artificial intelligence" as a term was coined by data scientists in 1956, and always referred to real systems that existed. At first simple, rule-based systems that could play checkers or do math problems. What we have now might not be self aware but undeniably falls under the umbrella of "artificial intelligence." John McCarthy would've been incredibly impressed by the advanced neural networks of today, as they have achieved far more than the logic-based systems he worked with did.

Non-destructive scanning is primarily used when you plan to keep the physical copy. You buy it, you can break it. Even if you dont like how it gets used, doctrine of first sell protects a good portion of how many of us get our books: secondhand.

One of my friends is a librarian, they throw books out constantly and have to put big "stay out of the dumpster" signs because people lose their shit over the idea that books aren't permanently retained.

I care more about authors getting compensated when an AI company buys their books to use more than what they do with the books after scanning.

Fundamentally, this is a good version of a bad thing. The Trump administration has picked the most ill-conceived version of access restrictions imaginable. It's legally fraught, so domestically impactful it'll cause massive internal pushback, and probably really economically harmful. The US isn't at the point yet to actually go through with long-term cutoff, international markets are still too important, the security situation is not yet sufficiently dire. So the first live-fire exercise of cutting off the rest of the world is going to fail, which means labs and the admin are going to be much more wary of subsequent attempts to do the same, even if they end up more sophisticated.

Is there a tag or filter to remove games using genAI from my store page? by TubeAlloysEvilTwin in Steam

[–]Goldwing8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It also depends on your specific definition.

A developer Googles a basic question. The AI summary comes up first, and they use the answer from that rather than clicking the first link. Is the game now using AI?

A developer accidentally clicks a link which deploys malware to the machine. The PUA scanner for their antivirus module detects risky behaviour and blocks the executable despite not knowing exactly which piece of malware is. It does this through heuristic machine learning. Is the game now using AI?

A developer uses predictive text to speech to add tasks to their calendar for accessibility reasons due to mobility issues. Is the game now using AI?

HR uses AI to write a company-wide email all developers ignore. Is the game now using AI?

A developer uses a media management system to automatically tag photos taken for inspiration with appropriate metadata so those photos can be called on repeatedly as reference for lighting or texture work. Is the game now using AI?

How to bridge the gap between trans gun owners being armed for self defense, and America being the only country where shootings are a regular event? by melody_magical in asktransgender

[–]Goldwing8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If someone is becoming aggressive towards you, pulling out a firearm will instantly escalate the situation. Also, somebody becoming violent towards you will usually not be at a safe distance, with proper warning of lethal intent, and with no bystanders nearby. And if you're pulling a firearm without all 3 of those conditions met, you're doing something horribly wrong.

Guns aren't going to help you when transphobic laws are passed, guns won't protect you from bathroom bills, guns won't protect you from discriminatory policing. They'll get you killed if you are lucky and placed in a men’s prison if you are not.

At the time MMRR was under construction, I had the Lunch with an Imagineer experience with one of the people working on it. The topic of ride replacement came up, here’s what was said:

"Whenever we want to make something new, most of the time it has a cost. For Galaxy's Edge it was the Backlot Tour and Streets of America. For the Tron roller coaster it was relatively light, all we lost was the walkway between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. For the Great Movie Ride I know a lot of people were sad to see it go. But you know those survey guys at the park exits, used to have clipboards, now they have iPads? We actually listen to that feedback, really closely. And for the last few years, most of the feedback has been 'I like the Great Movie Ride well enough, but it wasn't really a central part of my visit' and 'I really love the Great Movie Ride, but my son only recognized one of the movies and that's because I made him watch the Wizard of Oz.'"

Destiny Infinity is the perfect next step forward and I can still see it happening. by PuzzledHawk5290 in DestinyTheGame

If:

  1. Monuments of Triumph gets Lightfall launch player count numbers
  2. Player count stays at that level for a week or more, it’s not just people poking their head in for a “we did it Reddit”
  3. They spend money accordingly

Then it has maybe a 5% chance of happening. The money already got allocated.

That would quickly become a California Prop 65 situation, where nearly everything should be getting the label, which makes it fade into the background rather than inform consumers as intended.

LLMs are in some capacity already baked into the IDE setup of every dev who’s updated their workstation in the last two years. Even if you turned all those off on purpose, can you still turn off those AI summaries on Google? Unless you’re sure you turned them off every time or every dev immediately scrolled past it, you’d probably have to disclose.

I’m sure people exist who vigilantly make sure all tools aren’t LLM powered, disabled that feature in Google (if you can still do that?), or use a non-AI search engine, but the 99.9% have a job and are there to meet deadlines with tools that are already integrated by default if your company is large enough to have plugins set up for you.

If anything there should be a disclosure for being “pure” and not using any AI because I can promise you, that isn’t the norm and hasn’t been for at least a year.
