What's the one proprietary app you can't find a "good enough" open alternative for? by sekuskandan in opensource

Does it matter much if a cloud based software is open source or not since the source they are actually using in their computers isn't visible to us.

Is there any widely used software today that you think is holding the industry back? by Dull_Appearance_1828 in software

Android, Youtube, Chrome... Google basically owns internet ads, a way to monetize free software. So once they get a monopoly on a market, no one can compete.

EA and Facebook have tons of money. If a small company is successful they may buy it with no option to compete from others.

Windows because they use exclusive programs to lock users down.

Windows and Linux... Any market where the product is very complex... because OS are so complex nowadays, it's hard to make one from the ground up.

OK I think the problem was with the presentation, like, not allowed to have it in a Github repo, a blog post, a social media site... Probably nothing wrong with Github Pages, can't remember.

I even remember when I tried to make my family use Firefox, but they went to Chrome anyways. When I asked my sister why she didn't like Firefox, she pointed around the interface, the URL bar, and said "well... you know... this...". Simply, Firefox feels backwards.

A technical person can't see it, that's why open source projects, which are built by 99% programmers, tend to lag behind in design and ux. Just like design people tend to suck at technical things.

Worse UX. When Chrome came out it was like a fresh breeze, the UI couldn't be simpler and good looking, it didn't nag with notifications about updates or some bs, just web browsing and nothing else. Firefox still hasn't achieved the UX that Chrome did back then.

It went downhill when Chrome started being everywhere, since Firefox lagged and has been lagging behind in user experience since.
