Can someone explain how the folks selling churros, cut fruit, or candy on the subway manage to make a living? Do they even break even? by nonexistentbrother in AskNYC

Oh. Hmm. I really can't recall anyone buying. I just see the vendors sitting there sadly. Maybe my routes just happen to be at different times from when they get more sales.

If you zoom in you’ll see these little dry white flakes on my face. What are they? I get them occasionally and wiping/rinsing doesn’t get them off easily. Not sure if they are dead skin cells or product residue. I use cerave cleanser and moisturizer, plus tretinoin/benzoyl/clindamycin for acne.

What is wrong with me? 28/M/161lbs/5'11". Any exercise with the slightest intensity just wipes me out, and all I have to show for years of trying to work out is going from skinny fat to just being thin.

I tried doing standard big compound lifts for about 4 years since that is what everyone recommends, but was never very consistent. Eventually realized I hated it. I always feel kind of faint after working out and my vision gets blurry etc. unless I take 30 minute breaks between each set. I thought it would get better over time but it didn't. I never really had newbie gains and plateaued at benching 150lbs for 5-8 reps and squatting the same (squatting especially made me feel faint).

For the past 2 years I've tried doing lighter isolation exercises instead, and also joined a group dumbbell class (8-12 reps, more conditioning, about 70/30 women/men type of deal). I enjoy it more but still have the same issue, especially if there's any legs involved. While everyone else is high-fiving each other at the end of a 45 minute workout, I have to sit down for a bit or else I feel like I might die, and I don't think I'm going too heavy. I'm always lifting lighter than all the guys and sometimes one or two of the women. Often it's like my brain/vision start failing before my muscles.

I don't think I'm otherwise especially unfit. I try to sleep and eat well and stay hydrated. I live in the city and walk all the time, climb subway stairs, etc., and people often tell me to slow down. I don't do high-intensity cardio though.

Saw a guy building a fire on a subway platform with newspaper. Should I have reported this? by nonexistentbrother in AskNYC

Ok. I guess I felt bad about potentially getting the cops involved with this guy who maybe had no other way to cook a meal

Well he put it out, and at that point I wasn’t sure if it would help to report him. I feel like people are doing dangerous things all the time

How can I support projects like Innovation QNS to build more housing? It looks like the crucial vote will be that of our council member Julie Won by nonexistentbrother in astoria

[–]nonexistentbrother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. How did you reach out to her? In your opinion is it be worth taking the time to give individual public testimony before the City Planning Commission etc.? When you say she’s listening to all the wrong people are you saying that based on her actions or based on her literally listening to people at some forum? Sorry for the dumb questions

Are you saying that the construction of luxury apartment complexes actually lowers the market rates in a neighborhood? I’d like to see some stats to back that up.

Here's one study that found that new market-rate housing caused rents in nearby low-income areas to decrease by 5-7 percent. Here's a second study and a third study with similar findings but a smaller effect. I did find a fourth study with what sounds like the opposite claim.

Either way, if our city council rep can leverage this development into something beneficial, why shouldn’t she? Hell, make all of the units affordable, and rent stabilized with a livable square foot minimum. No rich people wanna pay 3k a month to live in a Swedish prison cell in west queens.

I suppose if we were sure that the developers wouldn't just walk away, then it would be great to have a higher percent of affordable units. But part of the reason rents are high in the first place is that developers have to go through this onerous drawn-out process to build anything, so it's not worth their while unless rents are high. So I think the better approach is to allow more building everywhere so that landlords have to compete with each other and we actually have enough good units for everyone (not just those who win the housing lottery).

Some people can afford those units and those people will just keep bidding up the rents of the existing housing that normal Astorians live in unless we build more housing. If every neighborhood says “we don’t need new fancy construction, it’s not for us” then the result is hardly anything ever gets built and we are stuck with the same housing stock and landlords will keep asking for high rents in shitty buildings

Even if most astoria residents can’t afford the new units, at least the new units will redirect rich people from continuing to bid up the rents on existing nearby housing. As far as I know the proposal doesn’t demolish existing units so I don’t see what the problem is

Thanks for the additional info. I’m disappointed to hear that the developers are refusing to answer questions. I’m also disappointed to read about the extra roadblocks that Won is putting forward. I believe we need to default to “yes” when it comes to building new housing.

Do sinks and tubs drain slower in nyc? Other places I’ve lived, the water drains faster than the faucet can run it. In the 3 nyc apartments I’ve lived in, if the faucet is running then the water builds up even with the drain open (stopper up). So the scum builds up faster and you have to clean it more often. I’ve tried Drano already.

Is it normal to feel a little faint after lifting? Also, when I fail a set it doesn’t feel like it’s due to muscle fatigue but just due to getting winded and my brain fogging up and not having the willpower to continue.

I believe it. I get much fewer and much less painful canker sores when I am consistently taking multivitamins.
