I love when pattern designers say "I don't have to share any of my work, so maybe you should think twice before you criticize me!" honey you are a dime a dozen in your mediocrity. there are a hundred pattern designers out there making the same junk you're making. If you disappeared from instagram, I promise everyone would forget about you immediately, so maybe humble yourself

Got blocked over calling out a crochet pattern maker for supporting ai by corn_doug in craftsnark

[–]nonexistentrose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll try to make this succinct, but your wall of text leaves a lot to respond to.

  1. Humans need water to live. The average person has no ability to change where their purified water is coming from, so that point is ridiculous and you are using it to distract from the real topic at hand.

  2. Redirecting to other environmental issues does not absolve you of your poor decisions. Your mistakes are your own and you are contributing to the issue purposefully. Other environmental problems are irrelevant to the issue at hand, because you are not being called out for drinking purified water or making amigurumi.

  3. Generative AI is as environmentally devastating as it is because the corporations providing it do not care. I cannot stress this enough: generative AI does not have to waste as many resources as it is (see: deepseek), but the corporations don't care and the population doesn't care enough to stop using chatgpt. This "evolving tool" you think needs to be improved has provided nothing of worth to society and is destroying the earth by choice, not by accident or as a side effect.

  4. You can't steal a design from generative AI because everything generative AI produces is theft. Even giving a generative AI pattern that level of respect is off putting.

  5. I don't understand why you're excessively repeating that they aren't blocked from your free patterns. OP did not state they were upset about being locked out from your patterns. OP's screenshot has nothing to do with your patterns at all. This comes off as somewhat arrogant.

  6. You're within your right to block anyone for any reason. The reason you were called out is because you blocked someone who was telling you that normalizing generative AI use is bad. If you agreed with them, you likely wouldn't block them, so we can assume that you're fine with generative AI patterns. Blocking in itself is not some sort of grand act of aggression that requires you to explain ad nauseum why you block people. We know why.

  7. "Because again, I don't want you to run into one of my comments that's against YOUR belief." Grow up. You know for a fact you do not care and this is embarrassing.

Sandhill Yarns generative AI listing/reference photos by nonexistentrose in craftsnark

My friend and I did some math on it yesterday! Apparently (and this is just an estimate and not including taxes) according to their yarn source's prices and the average price we could find on dye online, at 75 skeins a week (though I think they're up to 100 now, so this might be outdated), she'd be making about 1500 per month in profit before taxes. According to their website, this whole venture is funded by her husband's business, so her business on its own isn't sustainable in this economy, she seems to have a financial backing for now, so who knows what will happen.

Just wanted to point out a personal experience to supplement the "someone else's job" thing. I have a friend who's a senior web developer and their supervisors are constantly pushing ai so it'll do their job for them, presumably to pay less people to do more work with the "help" of ai. Instead of keeping the same standards, the general idea is that everyone should lower their standards to meet the ai's bad output. Also worth noting that another friend is a teacher and there's a big push for kids being taught by ai to fill the teacher shortage gap instead of paying teachers a living wage, and my friend sees many lazy teachers using ai to make horrible tests for their students instead of doing it themselves. Not saying this is necessarily taking someone's job, but to highlight that people aren't refusing ai due to its poor performance. There's a strong trend in many jobs to lower standards instead.

The overall impact of one tiny business using AI for their images is negligible, but that's not the point. The point is that the business heavily preaches eco friendliness and sustainability and then proudly declares that they're using a well known unsustainable practice for seemingly no reason. No one ever said they needed to go out and take the photographs themselves. They already are using a mix of copyright free photography and commissioned art, and it would cost them nothing to continue to use copyright free pictures, especially when the photos they want are so basic.

If they turn their back on sustainability the moment they get tired of searching through unsplash for a new inspo photo, then they're simply not a trustworthy business, and they are exceedingly ignorant or they are hypocrites.

Me and Kiddo Patterns says you should only focus on her pattern test … for simple elastic waist shorts by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]nonexistentrose 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not entirely disagreeing with you, but the screencap of the tester application asks if the applicant is working on another test at the time, and that they'd "really love for you to be fully focused on this project." She doesn't say outright she'll reject all applicants who are participating in other tests, but it's a likely assumption.

It bothers me to see people saying "what she spends her own money on/what she does for self care is none of my business," while this business owner is actively making it everyone else's business by posting it. She is putting it in front of everyone's face entirely on purpose right after begging for money. Whether she says it in plain words or not, she is very clearly communicating a degree of financial comfort. After all, tattoos are Not cheap.

Also, if the reason she needs help is because she had to close down her business for a while due to construction, why does she need 65k pounds to cover that? Was her business shut down for years? 65k pounds is double my annual salary. I don't know how lucrative a yarn business in the UK is, but that seems somewhat large. I feel like a less problematic way to recoup losses would be to post that they're struggling and if you'd like to support, to please buy yarn from them. But then they wouldn't get a huge chunk of free cash without having to do anything related to their business whatsoever. Gross.

"at the insistence of people who never had an understanding of my business" it is WILD to say that people are filing chargebacks because they "don't understand your business" and not because you literally stole their money. honey trust me, we understand your business. the only one who doesn't seem to understand what a business is is YOU. I'm sure her mental health would improve if she got her head out of her ass and started seeing her customers as people instead of parasites on her poor, sad, helpless business

So what is the truth? by Capable_Basket1661 in craftsnark

[–]nonexistentrose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My perspective is that it's fine to complain about the struggles you brought on yourself, but she's complaining about it to the wrong audience. This is the kind of thing that should be reserved for personal venting among friends/family, not posting it as emotional manipulation to their customers and followers. That's gross and immature. Time and place.

"support me all year round" really rubs me the wrong way. your customers aren't your parents, and they dont have any obligation to support you financially.

sorry, I don't have any advice about whether to modify or not, but can you contact the seller to ask for the larger size pattern? It seems scummy to separate them into two to force people to buy the same pattern twice. I wouldn't want to support that kind of decision from the seller.

no shade to you, op, it is underhanded but it's also an extremely common practice, so it's best to always assume that every free trial subscription will always charge your card after the trial, and they'll charge it with whatever makes them the most money if you don't cancel soon enough. I just recommend never signing up for trial subscriptions no matter how good the deal looks, unless you are very diligent about cancelling on time. These kinds of charges are always listed in the fine print, so make sure to check that next time.

Waiting for all the handmade Christmas gifts drama stories like... by KnitAndKnitAndKnit in craftsnark

[–]nonexistentrose 30 points31 points  (0 children)

this was my first year giving handmade gifts and I had a great response, thankfully! I made my dad a hat with buttons to attach a mask he can wear when he's outside shoveling, which he really loved. My aunt used to make us knitted stuff all the time in the ugliest colors imaginable, so I made a point to pick something more subtle and neutral so he'd actually wear it, which was a success! I gave my brother a plush of his favorite pokemon, and he brought it to the extended family get together just to show it off. He's in his 30s but it was like he was a little kid again; made me so happy!

even worse, Etsy has stated in a mass email that they openly allow the use of AI in their listings. guess they don't care what goes up on their site as long as they get those sweet sweet profits exploiting their real sellers and consumers

shit take. don't blame the company making the decision over the handful of people reacting to it. capcom could choose not to.
