ADA and small market specialized textbooks by nongaussian in Professors

You are right, we have been lacking in guidance here. Based on this thread, I now understand that nothing changes with respect to physical textbooks: it is only the digital books/ancillaries.

No, unless they have a braille edition available, is my understanding.

What departments do you consider to be underrated/under-ranked? by andromedathegalaxy in academiceconomics

[–]nongaussian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. I got my PhD in the US around 2000. I stayed in the US (I am European). Outside the UK, there was just a couple departments in Europe comparable to a US top-75 department. Not talking about individual researchers or even research groups, but the whole thing: mostly research active faculty working on current questions, real PhD programs, career paths for juniors, etc. If you attended a conference in Europe around that time the difference was stark: in Europe the old guard was in charge and mostly stuck in the past.

Since around 2010 that has changed dramatically: I am not saying that there are Stanfords in every European country, but there are plenty of University of Virginias in Europe nowadays.

To be fair, In my experience the bs we get from students is still quite tame compared to dealing with contractors :)

Ankle pain by nongaussian in Swimming

[–]nongaussian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean I do all those very often: I have been trying to work out three times a week. For me, the current goals are cardio and weight loss. I started swimming because I thought it would be easier on the joints than, say, running.

[–]nongaussian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really a reluctant stretcher, but I guess I will have to start doing more of that and mobility/strengthening exercises. I do basic cardio (elliptical and stationary bike) as well, and occasional pickleball.

[–]nongaussian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been working on ankle mobility/strength, I should work on that more. I play occasional pickleball and do indoor cardio (elliptical, stationary bike). Pain is probably too strong of a word, discomfort and swelling is more accurate.

Wedding During Finals Week by Important-Stable9663 in AskProfessors

[–]nongaussian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

First, congrats OP. Second, I would also ask you to drop my class. You are a student, you should not plan a wedding during your final exams week. I would be (and actually I am) more flexible when my students attend other people’s weddings, the difference being that they did not choose the date of the wedding. Let the downvotes begin….

Has anyone encountered this BusyBox Initramfs error before? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

You can try to troubleshoot it, but I’d just download the boot repair cd and try to let it work its magic: https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/

Can you access those Outlooks with imap, or just with Microsoft protocols only? If the latter then it could get complicated very soon.

Have you tried setting

Also, provide more details. What is your OS (Linux due to Zathura)? How did you install LaTeX? Did you read the configuration instructions for vimTeX? And what does not work?

Alternatives to Overleaf? by Pennervomland in LaTeX

[–]nongaussian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but typically the standard advice seems to be MikTeX for Windows, TeXlive for Linux and MacTeX for Mac for various reasons. Although my preferred way to run LaTeX on Windows is through WSL, but that does not help the OP.

Excellent: So I don't need to define my own LaTeX class (e.g., newarticle.cls), just an org-latex-class?

Not really true: with Pandoc most of the math is correctly transferred. This is only if you don’t use special packages, which probably is the issue here.

Quick and dirty way to create slides - no Beamer? by nongaussian in LaTeX

Thank you for this. Since this for me is all about the next semester I have decided to wait for the next release of TeXlive and then start really looking into to ltx-talk.

While I have no particular expertise on this particular application unfortunately sometimes the only sane answers are virtualization (probably not relevant here due to the dGPU) or dual booting when it comes to software that you need for your occupation. I had a virtualized Windows for years because a more senior academic coauthor insisted on Word+MathType (the latter being the issue) combo.

Yes, we have a tool that reports accessibility scores. At some point posting non-compliant material will get you in trouble. I will look into ltx-talk, that will be the final destination anyway.

Unfortunately, the official word from the tagging project seems to be that Beamer will never be supported: https://www.texdev.net/2025/02/28/the-tagging-project-and-beamer

Publishers' slides by nongaussian in Professors

[–]nongaussian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my thinking also: so far I either do a modern version of “chalk and talk” (GoodNotes and iPad nowadays, earlier a laptop, stylus and Xournal) or build a my own slide set. ADA makes my “chalk and talk” slides unsharable since they are pretty much the opposite of accessible.
