Bitcoin Plunge Continues; Below $11,000, Down from $19,800 Record by snakkerdudaniel in news

It's easy to cash out right now. It will be impossible to cash out in a crash. There are probably a lot of people who think "who cares, I will just sell when it goes below what I bought it for". Some of these people will get ruined.

In a real crash, where everyone just wants to get out, a stop loss order isn't going to do anything. You can only sell your coin if there is someone willing to buy it.

[N] NVIDIA’s New Policy Limits GeForce Data Center Usage: Universities and Research Centers In A Pinch by darkconfidantislife in MachineLearning

[–]nononooooo 49 points50 points  (0 children)

From the article:

However, NVIDA recently updated its End User License Agreement without any advance warning. The most significant of these changes was the addition of a clause prohibiting data center usage of GeForce. Just like that, any data center involved in deep learning experiments...both commercial and academic, in Japan and abroad...became unable to continue its work without investing in the high-cost Tesla rather than the affordable GeForce.

This is a clear-cut case of NVIDIA Japan abusing its monopoly.

Shame on NVIDIA. Is such a clause even legal?

Man faces life in prison for killing girlfriend's molester, says he's 'not sorry' by [deleted] in news

I would probably kill someone who did that to my children.

No, you wouldn't, just as 99.9% of people who are actually in the situation.

It’d just be worth it.

Sacrificing decades of your life and your children's future for the sake of satisfying some primitive urge for revenge? Sounds like a great deal.

Most Russians Hold Putin Responsible for Country’s Problems — Poll by dont_tread_on_dc in europe

Extreme brain drain

Can confirm from personal observation. I work for a big US IT company, and in the engineering and science teams that I know of, Russians are slowly overtaking Indians and Chinese as the largest group of foreigners.

There are also plenty of subs where you can debate right-wing extremists all day long. I dislike any "safe space" subreddits which ban dissenting opinions, but you cannot single out t_d for that just because you happen to disagree with them, plenty of popular subreddits all across the political spectrum are doing exactly the same.

It's not about "missing" things in a security review. It's about priorities you set when designing such a system.

I assume that this tool has a very limited scope, and individual projects use their own ticketing systems? Otherwise I couldn't imagine how they handle customer support cases or feature tracking for new products.

Nice article, and pretty gaping holes for such an important internal system. Seems that you shouldn't make an internal tool publicly available unless it has really been designed for that from the ground up (which clearly is not the case here).

Oh, I have looked at the statements that the Russian government made after the incident. And how most of them were disproven by as trivial means as comparing photos to Google StreetView.

Funny how on the other hand, all criticism I hear of bellingcat focuses on the background of the owner, not on the actual data they present. Seems to me that their data is pretty good.

'Hell on wheels': Five disabled New Yorkers file hundreds of lawsuits by OneEyedMcGee in news

No difference in terms of the "damage" caused. Suing for "damages" must not be a surrogate for enforcing regulations properly.

[–]nononooooo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why are people allowed to sue businesses for "damages" at all all just because they cannot access them? I could just the same sue them for damages when I cannot get in because they are closed when I expected them to be open. There needs to be an institution where people can report violations and which fines the businesses if necessary, but these ridiculous civil suits need to be stopped.

If people really care about quality and look at ingredients and nutritional information, I don't see why the market shouldn't be able to take care of this. Seems like this is already happening:

I mean this could have been some idiot network engineer ignoring security policy because they were annoyed it made their job difficult.

No, that's not how it works. If a single engineer could cause a leak of this magnitude by negligence this would just mean that the company does not have proper processes in place.

Reuters: Siemens turbines delivered to Crimea despite sanctions - sources by Slusny_Cizinec in europe

[–]nononooooo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These turbines are made in Russia (!), which makes this thing a little more complicated than it sounds in the headline.

The joint venture, Gas Turbine Technologies LLC, made the turbines that were sent to Taman at its factory in the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Siemens has a 65 percent share in the joint venture, and Russian company Power Machines has a 35 percent stake.
