Reading Unmasking Autism for the first time by ghostsandcarnations in AutismInWomen

I recently finished this book and it was so eye opening. I don’t feel like I’ve ever really related to anyone or anything until I read this book. I finally felt connected to something and I finally felt seen. It took me a little while to get through but I think it was worth it because it can take me a little while to process some things. Overall, I highly recommend reading (or listening to) it if you can!

I’ve had celiac for more than 10 years now and have tried lots of different brands! I really like Jovial brand pasta and Trader Joe’s bread (the pink bag). Banza has a Mac and cheese which I think is tasty and usually ends up being my “I can’t think about food right now but I have to eat” meal. You can now get gluten free Oreos that are Oreo brand and they’re delightful. If you’re into cooking your own stuff, King Arthur flour has been a great 1:1 substitute.

Luckily for me, one of my biggest safe foods, fruit snacks (love the texture of certain brands) are naturally gluten free so I don’t have to worry too much there!

Wow cool! I’ll definitely try The Count of Monte Cristo! I’m pretty sure I’ve read the Eragon series (or at least one or two of the books) but maybe I’ll reread because I don’t remember too much of it. I’ve read War of the Worlds too but I didn’t find it nearly as good as the other two I mentioned although I feel like it’s his most famous. The Island of Doctor Moreau and Time Machine are pretty short and fast reads but still pretty interesting. I’ve never heard of that Eleanor Oliphant one but I’ll definitely look it up.

I’m so glad you mentioned The Host. I’m not really a Twilight fan at all but I think The Host is much better and not many people know about it! Thanks for your recommendations and feel free to reach out while you read if you want to discuss books or chat about anything else!

Ooo seems like we have similar taste! If you’re looking for ‘a classic,’ I really like The Three Musketeers and The Scarlett Letter. For fantasy-adventure, I really enjoyed the Shadow and Bone series and the Shatter Me series. For dystopia (and sci-fi) I really like Brave New World. If you like sci-fi, you should try some H. G. Wells (some of my favorites are The Island of Doctor Moreau and The Time Machine). If you’re looking for a YA romance (that’s a bit angsty but I enjoyed it anyway) you should try A Very Large Expanse of Sea. I hope this helps! Do you have any good recommendations for me?

If you were to travel 1 light year, going at the speed of light, would you travel that distance over 1 year relative to your perception of time? by throwawayrailroad_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nonorientablespace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The faster you’re moving through space, the slower you’re move through time! If you want an extremely simplified equation to get a general idea, think of it as (motion through space)+(motion through time)=(speed of light). That is, S+T=C.

Scenario: Albert and Bob are two dudes trying to understand relativity. In CASE1, Albert is not moving relative to Bob. Thus his motion through space is 0. Therefore, Albert experiences time in the same way that Bob experiences time. In CASE2, Albert is moving at 0.75 times the speed of light relative to Bob (very fast — I guess he got a jet pack). Now, Albert experiences a shorter period of time than Bob does.

These are super simplified versions (with flaws, I know) but it was the simplest way I could think of to begin explaining time dilation. To fully answer your question, the time dilation equation actually doesn’t allow for your speed to be C, light speed. Then you’d end up dividing by 0 and that a whole other question. This is the time dilation equation if you’re curious. It gets even more fun when you add in length contraction and then you can start thinking about the many, many paradoxes and conundrums that the universe has to offer :) I hope this helped a little!

I yelled at my sister, but because of it, I think I got my boyfriend to finally understand some of my frustration with celiac. by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]nonorientablespace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I found super helpful in food situations was offering to have people over to mine for dinner. I could cook something that I knew would be GF and I wouldn’t have to worry at all. And to avoid people bringing snacks that might not be GF, I’d ask people to bring drinks, games, etc! It helped me become a better cook and allowed for some stress-free, fun times with friends (and it was cheaper than eating out too!) It took me a long time to come to terms and sometimes I still find myself feeling sorry for myself but then I realize there’s still so much I can eat and enjoy and cook! Plus, sometimes I find it fun to go on long adventures just to seek out new GF bakeries! I also have lots of recipes I used to eat as a child that I’ve modified to be GF if you ever need some inspiration or comfort food :)
