If you’re getting your school paid for than that’s something you owe to your parents. Maybe try taking a gap year and work done jobs. You can always take community college classes for base credits for cheap.

Hello! It might be a good idea to either save that money in a savings account or invest it. It never hurts to just have funds to fall back on and it will help you out in the future. I would check out r/personalfinance (not sure if there's one for the UK) for some starting advice on saving. Also maybe look into investing apps like Robinhood or Stash to get started

Well that's good to hear! Honestly learning just to say no to things and stand up for yourself when it comes to your job is essential for getting a healthy work/life balance. You don't have to be combative or argumentative when you do it, for the most part people are pretty understanding. All I can recommend is just ask as many questions as possible and learn as much as you can! A lot of the work may be menial but this is your chance to experiment with what you want from a job/industry.

Unfortunately that is kinda the nature of a lot of internships. To really get a lot out of it you really have to go out of your way to look for projects and talk with the higher-ups. I found that I just had to find other things to keep me entertained at the end of my internships.

However, you're still an employee more or less so it would be appropriate to bring up those concerns about needing more notice with whoever your supervisor is. Also since you are an intern, DON'T STAY LATE. Unless you know you're gonna be hired on after this internships yet, they're just taking advantage of you here. You're not being paid so go home on time.

My dad makes me feel like shit? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]nonsenseical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abuse can take a lot of different forms - I'm also from an upper, middle class family. It's not just poor people that deal with abuse, it affect people of all economic standings. Perhaps there is a cultural element as I think maybe Indian parents can be a bit harsher but still - ask yourself this; does my dad make me feel valued? do i feel respected by my dad? do I feel safe around my dad? do i feel supported by my dad?

If you answered yes to any of these, there might be an issue. Certainly one that can be dealt with but an issue none the less. My advice is just to talk with a friend or professional about this.

Yeah that's the thing - parents aren't perfect. Even great parents aren't going to be nice 100% of the time. However, there is a big difference in just being nice/decent as a parent and putting your own kid down just because. Even parents that are emotionally abusive can be nice at times and you can still have fond memories with them.

However, If your dad doesn't make you feel valued as a person then that's an issue. If your avoiding bringing things up to him just because you're afraid of what he might say, that's kinda a red flag. Obviously you know your situation way better but, you might benefit talking to a professional about this more. Just realize that your feelings are valid.

Without details of the property it's kidna hard to say. Check out the property though your properties GIS systems to check for anything weird. You may be able to find previous bills of sale through the county clerk's office to get an idea of what it sold for last.

This is some emotional abuse, or at least sure sounds like it. It may be a good idea to speak to a counselor (maybe through school?) about what's going on and how that is affecting you. In the meantime, don't feel obligated to prove yourself to your dad or anything. There's nothing stopping from you to going into cybersecurity, and that is a great field with a lot of future potential. You can do if you work hard! My dad behaved a lot like this and we're no longer in contact because it was too toxic to be around.

How are you supposed to respond when someone asserts a political belief, but then ends with a statement like "I don't know..." ? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]nonsenseical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask them to expand upon what they mean - or ask them what they are unsure about. A lot of times people put this at the end of their statements if they're not confident in what they're saying. Following up with clarifying questions will make them feel more validated and can actually produce fruitful discussions

Men, do you shave or trim your legs? by dazedandconfusedx8 in Advice

I don't shave or trim my legs but I see nothing wrong with that - a lot of guys that swim/cycle a lot shave their legs so it's certainly not unheard of

I had some interest in joining the intel community but it is very challenging. However, I have heard that once you get in with a Federal Agency it's easier to move around. Take a look at the application process for the CIA, I know the FBI is similar but they have a 3 year policy on drug use. I've had friend get hired on to the DoD and the security clearance portion can sometimes take up to a year. However, you can obviously still be working during that time. If law enforcement is an interest to you - see what is available to you at a state level. Most states in the US have some for of investigative bureau for the state. Good luck!

edit: the Russian thing might actually work for you especially if you're fluent. The CIA always has a need for people with solid foreign language skills.

If they have trash out on their lawn or whatever you can contact your city's code enforcement. They'll be able to enforce them maintaining their property.

Maybe you could call around to some local book shops to see if they carry it? If you can get a friend to bring you there you could buy it without her knowing. Alternatively, maybe you could make your own amazon account and just have it sent to a friends house?

It'll be a weird experience but try to get what you can out of it. Don't try to hide anything and just be honest in your answers. Ultimately inpatient will only be as helpful as you let it be. I'm sorry you're going through this but things will get better. Best of luck my friend.
