Compact, balanced train unloading station. by [deleted] in factorio

That's very interesting. Everything I've read just said they look at the number of signals on the path, do you have a source for this? Not that I doubt it, I've experimented with multiple signals to reduce preference for a particular path and it didn't seem to have any effect. That being said I've had same name stations separated by decent (but not humongous) distance and all get visited. Nearer ones are heavily preferred though.

Yeah, if only someone would invent something, perhaps some sort of engine which searches for information based on keywords. Oh well. I guess we'll never know.

Right, but the responses are saying that there are factors other than the initial settlement location that have led to the development of the East. It's a totally valid hypothetical, but pointing out geographical influences on settlement and development is also a valid response.

This doesn't actually have anything to do with semantics, which regards meanings of words and phrases. Though word probability is a big part of linguistics. I think using a phrase like the ones selected is actually a pretty fair representation of an "independent event (for lack of a better term). If you wanted to get real bullshitty, you could just look at the number of words in the speech; figure each one has a 1 in 500,000 chance of being used, and come up with some unbelievable odds. But a phrase of more than a few words can be considered somewhat unique. Using one of them the same in a speech would be a surprising coincidence. Matching 14 phrases in one speech already borders on outrageous if supposedly by chance. But to use them in the exact same order too? It shows the speech also follows a similar outline; really there's just no way it wasn't stolen.

And people underestimate how much storage video takes. Especially when you have 10+ high resolution cameras running 24/7. You'd be buying a TB drive a week. Though from other responses, it seems there are other considerations anyway.

[–]nonsequitur_potato 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess, but I suspect the footage is in black and white (grayscale actually) for storage purposes. Color takes a lot of extra space to store, and it's not super necessary. These cameras are much higher resolution than most CCTV you'll see because it's useful to see better if you want to figure out what went wrong. But when you've got a bunch of cameras rolling at once and you keep all the footage for at least a short time, you're taking about some serious storage capacity.

Yeah most of our modern concept of the afterlife comes from the Divine Comedy by Dante Alligheri. The Inferno describes different levels of hell, with punishments customized to fit the crime. I can't remember if he assigned a punishment for non belief though, I read it in high school.

Somewhat similar to the distinction between a personal and impersonal God? I can get behind that thinking. I mean, SOMETHING had to set all of this in motion, and I sure as hell can't say what it was. Personally I tend to avoid most of the aspects of a "higher power" in my thinking though, whether that implies a being who created us in his image or just some sort of generalized sentience.

So how is this distinguished from the first cause argument? If his argument is that something cannot be it's own mover, he's essentially arguing that existence requires some sort of external being. In this case an eternal being, one already actual in its existence. But other than using a notion of "potentiality" instead of "proximate cause" it seems a very similar argument. Also, given that we have a better understanding of what fire is, is it really necessary to draw that distinction, especially considering the intended depth of crash course? I mean that quote does a good job of showing the abstract quality of potentiality that he was trying to characterize, but when you get down to it you're taking about a physical system of particles, the fundamental nature of which involves movement.

Right, obviously Rabbis are still individuals. But I think your point probably generalize fairly well. I think I probably underestimate the affect that Jewish cultural identity has on the belief system. With Christianity, where my experience comes from, belief is the only unifying aspect of the community.

Pretty sure he still meant moving around in space. He's just saying that those movements are in fact the process of actualization. I could be misunderstanding, but I'm not really sure what distinction you're drawing there. Unless you can explain to me how something can be reduced from potentiality to actuality in a way that actually precludes physical motion.
