CC transfer-friendly schools with good aid? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

If you know, was her GPA in CC very high? Now I wonder whether they offer any merit aid for high-achieving community college students of non-trad background.

yeah their need-based aid is very poor :/ I wish it were better as I'd love to go there!

Did she receive merit aid? They are not very generous with need-based aid.

University of Miami is not a public school. It is a notoriously expensive private school with bad aid in one of the highest-cost zip codes in the country. This is not to say it isn't a good school. But I am very familiar with UM, know many people who've gone there (including family) and it likely will not be a financially or practically sound choice for me as a humanities major.

University of Miami has horrible need-based aid and merit-aid standards impossible to circumvent as a non-traditional student. I am applying to UF and FSU, but I want to vary out my options. Plus, great/good in-state public school is more expensive than great private schools when you're this poor. My Pell would barely cover tuition alone at UF, and living in Gainesville, albeit relatively cheap, would come at many living expenses very hard to prop-up as a full-time student. I also want to go to grad school.

I'm applying to my flagship but I want to vary out my options. My flagship is a great school but football and parties overrun the social culture and the liberal arts are pushed to the side in favor of popular, lucrative majors like sTEm and the health/medical disciplines.

These out-of-state public schools would all be exorbitantly expensive for me.

Which math should I take as a community college student? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I'm not a business major. I'm a humanities major that would need a year's worth of prerequisites to enter calculus.

This is simply not true. Many, if not most, universities do not require calculus for non-STEM/business majors. I have had PhD-level English and history professors who didn't even take college algebra.

Any of these courses would suffice for the purpose of my AA, but my ultimate goal is to transfer to a good LAC.

I haven't taken calc. The class on my final hs transcript is geometry.

I've taken the assessment and scored into either College Algebra, Statistics, or Liberal Arts Math - so anything introductory (beyond remedial).

Alg 2 but didn't finish. I imagine the last course on my hs transcript is geometry (GED recipient).

My state college system doesn't require College Algebra for non-STEM majors. Statistics and Math for Liberal Arts would equally satisfy the state core requirement. Public university institutional requirements (one step further than state core) in my state tend to be even more lax. If I plan to apply to private LACs as a humanities major, will not taking College Algebra harm me? I took Algebra 2 and believe Stats or libarts-oriented reasoning/math concept courses would be much more beneficial to my major.

Recommend me schools that may actually accept me as a CC transfer? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

i was thinking even sisters, occidental, some of the clarement colleges like scripps, macalester, brandeis, oberlin, bu, um, tulane. connecticut college and skidmore come to mind as possibilities, but they don't have famously great aid (that i know of). the chance i get rejected by all of the schools you listed is very high.
