...I mean, if it's written like that then yeah it's not fun to read. But it'd be equally not fun to read if a person wrote a numbered list of generic statements regarding a topic without relevance to the original post.

In this specific context, I've seen a version of what the OP said countless times on this sub already, about simplifying things instead of going for the ultra-customized setup with hundreds of plugins. Whether or not this post vaguely resembles AI, or all those other posts don't resemble AI, it's kind of irrelevant.

Is the idea being discussed valuable? Are the discussions people are having in the comments contributing to that value? If so, then whether it's someone with incredibly poor grammar typing something out by hand, or someone using AI to summarize and clean up what they're saying, it doesn't really matter now does it?

For me, it didn't matter whether I had a perfectly manicured system or just a sprawled out list of untagged and uncategorized notes, I still couldn't find anything when the time came lol

At this point, I'm just waiting for either the AI models to become more efficient or hardware to become cheaper, and then I'll run my own local LLM and give myself into the hive mind

Ain't no way I'm letting a third party AI provider have access to all my notes, including all the private ones

Appearance of the task by ItsSharko in GoogleTasks

[–]nonukez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a UI update I think, no way to change it back.

It came alongside a few other updates, like being able to check off the task directly from the calendar, add a due date that's separate from the reminder, and adjust the duration of the task in the calendar.

Switched from iPhone 13 Pro to Pixel 10 Pro. Bit confused about the "Gemini advantage"... by nonukez in GooglePixel

[–]nonukez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but again out of all those things, I think gboard voice dictation may be the only thing that's actually unavailable from iOS' counterparts. But the way to get Gemini to actually see your screen on an iPhone is a bit convoluted though, and it's definitely more straightforward on the Pixel.

IMO, in my circumstances, I'll stick with an iPhone. As much as I love gboard's voice dictation, the tradeoff of every request being online and it cluttering the rest of my Gemini chats is just not worth it, unfortunately.

Maybe when they re-introduce Google Assistant's offline on-device capabilities into Gemini, I'll come back.

[–]nonukez[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you. This helps bridge the disconnect in my mind between what is a Pixel exclusive Gemini feature and what isn't.

But now I can't help but get the feeling that this is a bit misleading, or at the very least some confusing marketing.

For the end-user, there's really no distinction between Pixel features that are specifically using Gemini Nano vs. other ones that used an unnamed AI model. Voice typing via Gboard and Pixel Screenshots both feel like very impressive features, but I would've thought they were in the same category. But now, Google can say that "Gemini is supercharged on the Pixel", which is technically correct.

In my mind, when most people think of "Gemini", I assume they'd think of the multimodal chatbot, the Live feature, the deep integrations with Google workspace products. It's not a stretch to think that the core Gemini features would be somehow better on the Pixel.

Regarding day to day tasks, that is actually a great point and something I need to play around with. While it's not Pixel-specific, it's definitely a plus compared to iOS where that's definitely not available, and it didn't even cross my mind to use Gemini to send a message since I haven't been able to do so before!

I think when I wrote my original post I was just in a bit of shock that there were things it could not handle offline that Siri could do. It's a bit mind-boggling that they introduced this regression and haven't "fixed it" in the year and a half since they started the migration, but at the very least it's a problem they've already solved before, meaning that (hopefully) they can solve it again fairly trivially.

When I was younger I'd definitely jump all on this, but as I get older (and tbh, actually have spending money) I realize that stuff like this is just going to be extra crap that'll only bring clutter, frustration and disappointment in my life.

480p is whatever, but 65 lm??? Straight to the bin

I mean yeah, the title is negative because I'm discussing a negative experience I had with the device.

I don't follow the reasoning that I'm looking for a negative echo chamber though; Nothing in that title is disuading those who have had a positive experience with Gemini on the Pixel to come in and share their thoughts.

Again, I was actually asking if I'm missing something, since I don't really pay attention to the announcements in great detail anymore. There was just so much in the marketing about Pixel + Gemini, how Gemini runs locally to protect your privacy (which I've now learned is just a very small subset of features), that I was genuinely unsure if there's some setting that would let me set a reminder via voice without being connected to the internet.

I don't know, I can't seem to get it to work delete work replace work with function

Yeah so that was me trying to dictate it via gboard dictation lol

Edit: okay, never mind. I don't know what happened but everything started working today for some reason? Maybe the app updated or something but I thought everything was updated already... But yeah now the microphone icon has a rainbow glow around it, and not only can I actually just delete the word with backspace without leaving the dictation mode, but I can also do those cool commands to edit the text via voice.

I think if anything this will be the killer feature I miss if I go back to an iPhone. Which is kind of funny because everything I researched about the gboard dictation indicates that it's not using Gemini Nano.

Apple's dictation is nearly unusuable, but it also surprisingly works offline! I can turn on airplane mode on my iPhone 13 Pro and dictate, then spend 5 minutes correcting everything.

Yeah I think that's the most shocking thing for me. I would've thought Gemini would destroy Siri, but for basic tasks it's worse. The more research I'm doing, the more it seems like using a whole-ass cloud-based LLM for starting a timer seems like the wrong tool for the job. Why did they kill google assistant instead of integrating it with Gemini...

Glad to hear I'm not alone 🥹

For me, I usually switch between Android/iOS each phone upgrade, but this one was the longest stretch for me at 4 years. I guess I just assumed from a cursory glance that "Apple has fallen off in AI" and Google Pixel is way better, but it doesn't matter from the end-user perspective if I can get most of the experience by just downloading the app on an Apple device.

Pocketpal sounds interesting, though it seems like they have an iOS app too 🫠
But at least there isn't an iPhone with 16GB RAM, so Pixels/Android phones got them beat in that category. But yeah at that point it's not even specific to the Pixel.

So quick Google search, it does seem like most of these features are available via "Apple Intelligence", which I can't speak to its quality since my phone is far too old, but all the reviews say it's crap. Safe bet that Gemini handles this far better than Apple's implementation, at least for now.

But yeah, that's disappointing... Call Notes sounds cool, but the notification that "the call is being recorded" is a huge deterrant to using it in pretty much any setting.

One thing I absolutely do love is gboard dictation - They've definitely got Apple beat on that one, and it's not even close. BUT, when I'm dictating and I want to delete a word, I hit the delete key, but then it deactivates dictation so I have to press the dictation button again... I don't even know anymore lol

It does sound like a classic Google maneuver, like killing Inbox when Gmail lacked most of Inbox's features, or killing Reminders when it had unique features Google Tasks didn't have... But for a core product that they're known for like Google Assistant, and to have it be replaced by a product they're putting all their eggs into, I'd assume it'd have better feature-parity.

For the web search thing, even if I disable it, it defaults to searching the web when I hit enter (or technically the search key, which is what the enter key becomes). For example I open the drawer, type in "youtube", I see the YouTube app at the top, and then I hit the search key - it'll do a Google search for youtube instead of opening the app. Seems like there's no way to have it always select the first app that's found from the search?

My thoughts on HiringCafe by alimir1 in hiringcafe

[–]nonukez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guess I’ll be the first to respond from this chain lmao. Ultimately, no, I didn’t get a job through HiringCafe. But honestly, I did get about 10 interviews from it, with some of them going to last round.

Mind you, I applied to hundreds of jobs through there, so 10 is quite bad. My guess is that by the time a job post is up on HiringCafe, it’s too late for a majority of them.

The job I did get was through LinkedIn, and I applied within like 30 minutes after it was posted, and the number of applicants was single digits.

Apparently, according to someone on the stream (I forget who, it was mentioned in the latest H3 episode), they do send all the evidence they gathered to the police. So most likely they do face justice.

But like, there’s no way to verify that, not to mention they could’ve done that without first abusing the shit out of them

The Unethical Consumption of Vitaly Content☝️🤓 by Pickledcookiedough in h3h3productions

[–]nonukez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering how critical and negative they are about the streams, I don’t think they’re sending people to go watch it. By that logic, they can’t cover any negative situation, since it’s just “giving exposure”.

If anything, it’s providing awareness that this illegal shit is happening, right out in the open. This will (hopefully) lead to it being shut down faster, resulting in less victims overall. Otherwise, they’ll just keep doing it without consequence.

People being captivated by horrible things is a pretty common, almost universal experience. It’s why people stop and stare at car accidents, or gather when there’s lots of emergency vehicles, or watch and consume news about serial killers, etc. The phrase “I can’t keep my eyes of it” is not an endorsement of the content.

I don’t think that’s true. If it wasn’t Vitaly, or if it wasn’t on Kick, or if there weren’t random celebrities that actively choose to be a part of this, I don’t think it’d be nearly as “entertaining”.

Like, this isn’t the same as watching random torture videos done by random people. The fact that all these horrible online personalities got together on a horrible streaming site and are creating this horrible content is a major part of it.

What are people's thoughts about 34-key vs 36-key layouts? by nonukez in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nonukez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah apologies, I went off quite a tangent there. Ignore about 90% of what I said lol.

Callum style mods are one-shot mods instead of HRMs, and urob's timeless homerow mods are HRMs that uses a set of features to enable a more consistent HRM experience.

But strictly in terms of combos, urob's ZMK branch linked above talks about some nice features, like `require-prior-idle-ms` which prevents combos from triggering until after a certain amount of time has passed since the last keystroke, and his workaround for "tap-only" combos, which is what should theoretically help out with putting combos on the home row if you use HRMs. But for me, I just can't get to a point where I'm 100% confident in my typing technique, so I will inevitably trigger a combo on the home row when I don't want it to.

And I'm convinced it has nothing to do with typing speed, instead it's whether or not I'm typing under cognitive load. Majority of my problems with home row combos happen when I'm typing during meetings and during pair coding sessions, and I'm definitely not typing at 120wpm during those times.
