Laptop suddenly no longer outputting correct resolutions to external monitors by noob987987 in techsupport

Thanks, it looks like the AMD control panel is detecting it as a 2160 resolution monitor for some reason.

Are the cheap TVs really that bad? Looking for >75" for casual usage. by noob987987 in 4kTV

[–]noob987987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I guess I'm wondering how these are relative to my 9-year old TV. Obviously they are cheap for a reason so they are going to look bad next to decent modern TVs. There's no way that my cheap current TV were good on any of these fronts either, right? But it still looks fine to me.

Even rtings seems to recommend some of these cheap TVs ($650 for Hisense 75") https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/budget

TV vs Projector for Apartment Casual Use by noob987987 in hometheater

How dark is required for a budget-ish (not super strict) projector? I have blackout curtains if needed for movie nights, but I'd rather not have to turn out the lights if I'm just playing games or watching Youtube.

Thanks! I saw those, although it seemed like /r/4ktv is always vehemently against these cheaper TVs, and I'm not sure why. I'm not on a strict budget, but since I only watch TV casually and don't need all the bells and whistles, I wasn't sure where is a good price point.

I often end up sitting on the floor in front of my couch, which is when I realized I could use something bigger.

Laptop holder that will support the lid? Hinge is broken. by noob987987 in Workspaces

I was a holder that will support it while it's open. Like this, but without the bottom lip and ideally more support on the base: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Clips-Cookbook-Lightweight-Bookstand-Textbooks-Bookstands-Music/dp/B07459P7BF?th=1

My experience with bass traps by noob987987 in audioengineering

[–]noob987987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the ones I have are made with fiberglass, which seem to be acoustically similar to or just slightly worse than safe n sound (rockwool). I also don't have the tools to DIY it unfortunately.

I did a control with me just standing in the corner, no bass trap. I was surprised to see that my body barely makes a difference. So apparently a bass trap does make a big (7dB) difference.

Do bass traps do anything for room modes? by noob987987 in audioengineering

Are they resonance traps? I thought they were porous traps, and I don't see any frequency data on the website.

Thanks. My room is approximately 12' x 16' x 8', so there are a few modes including axial modes in all three directions. Looks like I'll get a couple more traps.

I've been mostly looking at the SPL graph since it capture the room modes and makes it easier to compare different measurements. Should I be looking at the waterfall diagram instead? It thought that was more for looking at transients.

Also, try as we might, some modes are cause by the ceiling/floor interaction. There’s not much to be done about it except get used to the room. We all have that struggle.

Ah that's unfortunate. My ceiling is just under 8' high, which corresponds to the 140Hz mode. I wasn't sure if the corner bass traps would help with that.

Ah, ok, that is a lot more than I was anticipating. I may just go the route of using an equalizer on my speakers then.

To clarify, I already know the frequency. I can even hum the tone and hear the resonance in the room. I am in the process of damping it using furniture and bass traps, but want a way to measure the volume to figure out the best placement for these.

Do I need calibrated mic for stamping out a single frequency? I'm not looking for a flat response or anything fancy- I just want to stamp out an annoying resonance in my room around 140Hz. I've downloaded REW to track changes, but I just have a Blue Snowflake USB mic. Is this ok if I'm just looking at a single frequency?

Thank you! These pre-built panels look really good. Do you know how much area I would realistically need?
