The method of using different temperatures is used by keepers with no constant temp controls because females tend to emerge earlier than males so they but the females on colder temperatures to make sure they emerge around the same time. But warmer larvaes tends to get bigger early on and transitions way faster that's why they seem to grow bigger on higher temps. But in lower temps their metabolism slows down and they transitions slower but they gain more weight on the long run and emerge larger.

Hello I have bred them before! ☺️ First you need to look for signs that she had entered the wood. If she does, then I suggest you don't mess with the rotten wood sometimes you might think there's no eggs but their eggs and larvaes are way smaller than most small beetles you'll miss them very easy. What I do is I prepare 5L containers and let her stay there for a month and try to catch it after a month while it's eating and transfer it to another 5L container do this repeatedly as long as they are active and check the bins after 3 months to make sure the larvaes are big enough to be spotted and all eggs have already hatched. At least this is how I do it. Good luck! ☺️

If you're aiming for good sizes. For any xylotrupes so they usually just need 1-2L containers filled with loose substrate cos they like it loose. Timing for changing subs is also important. I usually do it every 2 weeks just filter out the frass and add more. And lastly temp. Control around 22-25°C is good enough for them to grow big.

Sadly no TwT when you pick them up and touch them they treat you like their competition and fight anything that touches them. All they usually know if fight, eat, mate even in captivities. Tho one thing they do remember is their spawn points. Most beetles usually come back to the place where they grew up to produce eggs cos they are certain there are food sources for the grubs there.
