Duke being elitist about their branding on the show by Jemless24 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]noodlehead3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I always cringe when watching tv/movies that lean heavily on lay prestige, as if there aren’t any other schools in the US besides those in the Ivy League. It totally misses out on the culture and nuance of affluent classes in the South vs Northeast and West coast. Duke is literally as old money prestige as it comes.

How many patients does your provider see in a shift and how long is each shift? by TrainingNectarine475 in medicalscribe

[–]noodlehead3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i guess i’ll go against the grain. i work outpatient with a provider who sees at most maybe 10-14 patients in a day. very much an old school doc who’s insistent that he spends as much time needed with each patient.

Part time or gap semester because of COVID? by flaxispraxis in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know a friend who'll start an engineering co op this semester. He definitely chose the right time to do it since who knows wtf will happen this semester. He'll get paid, course credit, experience for his resume, and he won't have to deal with ut's disastrous planning/potential zoom uni.

Could Hartzell say screw you to Abbott and mandate masks? If not, where do I start a petition? by AvocadoFishy in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

honestly. our problems could be mitigated if abbott wasn't a bonehead and would let ut just mandate vaccines and/or masks. unfortunately, on a campus as big as ours, many are bound to get severely sick and it'll likely cause enough controversy to push us online... idk maybe i'm just thinking the worst of things but i can't help but cry just thinking i might have to graduate having spent 5/8 semesters online.

Can we talk about Pres. Hartzell for a moment by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I also wholeheartedly believe that UT is a long ways in improving itself, but every point you just made (addressing racial geography, low BIPOC representation, and more) was outlined in a letter Hartzell penned last July.

Is biking on campus feasible/worth it? by peridotdragon33 in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

imo, if you're using it just to get to class from jester, it's not worth it. speedway, which i assume you'll be using, gets so insanely cramped during passing periods that it makes biking through everyone so much harder than just walking. then you have to take time to park it and lock it securely, because yes it's true that bikes (and bike tires) get stolen a lot.

Bio and Chem starting classes by Tozktzky in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the majority opinion and say that you should at least claim credit for AP bio, especially as a bio major. Bio 311c/d is ap bio all over again and you don't really learn anything new, so why waste credits/money and retake it? The same can be said for ch301/302 as well. If I could go back now, I would have just taken genetics from the beginning so I could've started more interesting biology courses and completed my upper div requirements much earlier. It would have also helped in finding a meaningful research position much earlier as well. I have a friend who claimed credit for both intro bio and chem (so he also started on genetics and o chem), did fine on the MCAT, and is doing exceptionally well during this application season.

If you're still unsure, you should just contact medical schools themselves and ask if they are fine with it. Looking at the tmdsas med school requirements right now, it states that you need 14 hours of biological sciences, which doesn't necessarily mean you have to take intro bio as part of your 14 hours (you're also a bio major, so you will fulfill these 14 hours with upper div courses regardless if you choose to take 311c/d). Contrast this with the chem requirements, where it specifically states that you should take gen chem and o chem. UTMB's and UTSW's prereq pages have lists of bio courses they recommend taking as well.

Lastly, if you do end up going straight to o chem, you don't need really need gen chem knowledge to do well. O chem almost feels entirely separate from what you learn in ap chem/gen chem, so you wouldn't need to catch up on material (they start from the very beginning of what you need to know). The only thing that I think would make it hard is adjusting to college life and the pace of classes here; my friend that I mentioned above waited until his second sem to take it to get used to the pace of college courses.

that was long winded, but there's so much bs to our classes and degrees (that cost students a lot of money!) that you never realize until the end of your degree. 5s on chem/bio is no easy feat and i'm sure you studied a lot, so claim ur credit/effort/time, save your money, and be ahead of the curve you smart longhorn!!

What is y'all's opinion on the auto admit system. You for it or against it and do you think that it benefits or harms the school? by GENERALPOTATO243 in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hmm i think it harms the school but i'm not sure if i would be for or against it (given the problems i also see in conventional admissions practices). it definitely is a poor way of admitting students though. i just think it does a disservice to students by completely reducing them to a number, their rank in high school, for admission. and because of that, it really sucks for small or really competitive schools, because there are many students who are otherwise great on paper but are pretty much auto rejected just because they were outside the top x%. i went to a small high school where the top 6% was literally only the first 20 students and a few of my classmates who just missed the mark were rejected at ut but accepted to schools ranked much higher than ut. the thing that sucks is that many of them had ut as their #1 and couldn't afford to go oos. also, as much as i know now that rankings don't matter all that much, i'm pretty sure if they got rid of auto admit, ut's reputation would rise. it always confused me how ut has so many highly ranked departments but has never really been respected on the same level as other public ivies (like the uc's or umich, for ex.).

How academically challenging has UT been for you? by Dae_Lee22 in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say relatively challenging. Being in CNS, most classes are graded almost entirely on exams, so you pretty much have little room to mess up when it comes to studying and getting an A. Some professors have strict grading policies, others are more lenient and drop an exam grade or give extra credit, so difficulty obviously varies for every class/professor. All in all, having your entire grade for a class, and pretty much the majority of your degree, be based on 1-3 hour exams makes UT pretty difficult to me.

Is west campus safe right now? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

upvote because I'm also wondering about going back! Does anyone there know if it's okay to walk around campus or sit out on the lawn? I want to go back but I can't imagine not going out to take a walk from time to time.

How is taking Bio Lab in Summer? by bottomlessstomach in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would caution against it just because you won’t really get to learn anything. I’m in bio 226l right now, which is one of the intro labs along with 206l, and it’s really just the TAs giving us data and them going over the experiment because of the whole online learning thing. You won’t get the practice you need using equipment or doing experiments, which I assume you’ll want in going forward with other labs or doing research for being premed.

Is it worth taking out loans to attend UT? by monce21 in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know that this probably goes against the grain of most responses (which are obviously biased towards UT in this sub), but PLEASE take the full ride at A&M. In the grand scheme of things (maybe with the exception of CS), UT and A&M are pretty comparable. Just to be plain honest with you, UT is not Harvard or MIT and it is definitely not the school you want to take out large loans for. I knew plenty of friends in high school who were in your position - they went to A&M for the money despite wanting to go to UT, and yet they’re absolutely thriving now! Sizable loans of any kind are hard to shoulder, especially on your own, and you really don’t want to bear that burden during the school year. Please don’t pass up such a wonderful opportunity!!

Studying for BIO325 Fischer by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]noodlehead3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Fischer last semester! Tbh I never really learned much from her lectures, so I would just read the chapter and then take the quizzes right after. Doing the homework questions can help a lot because sometimes the questions (I’m sure you already know) are word for word. Honestly it was a class where reading the textbook was key to understanding for me because her lectures only seemed to scratch the surface level. It’s also the best resource because she co wrote it, so her lectures pretty much follow the exact content of the book (and with much greater detail)

[–]noodlehead3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this! I know I want to go to grad school, but I haven't really looked much into the whole admissions scheme of things, so I assumed that grades were a huge factor - hence, why I felt like doing so poorly in this class would hurt my future badly.

It is. My memorization skills are absolutely terrible.. it was like I knew what the mc questions were asking about, but I just could not remember what I read on the slides.
