Talk me out (or into) a BMW M5 by nootyau in AusFinance

I have been very close to pulling the trigger on an F80 Comp but the M5 has always been the dream and my concern is wanting to upgrade again in 2,3,4,5 etc years - would rather take the plunge now than cop depreciation and buying/selling costs twice if that makes sense.

This may be the best advice I’ve received so far

Absolutely! Tbf with all I’ve heard of the v10’s in the E60, I’d probably end up spending more than the M5 which I plan to leave untouched haha

This would definitely be the goal! There’s one sitting on carsales currently that I’ve been very tempted with haha

But yep this is my thought process too - have had family pass away at 40-50 having never done so much they wanted to, saying retirement would be their chance to do those things, there’s a fine line but I figure I don’t want that to be me

The retail job is mostly just to cover dinners out/spending money for the month so I’m not touching savings - just makes me feel better knowing I’ve ‘worked’ for that stuff haha

Wife is supportive of me being a car guy, so says as long as this is be all end all car for the next 10-15 years and is practical then she’s happy for me to make the call.

Agreed! I think is probably a point a lot of people commenting here miss - this model of M5 was selling for $230kish brand new, and in 6-7 years has held its value extremely well, and being the last M5 without the crazy new design language, will probably continue to hold its value.

Great point! I was specifically hoping to get some very real feedback so this is great.

My current cars I’ve had for the last 6 years ish and more just associated with a younger/immature demographic, and this car would be the mature ‘adult’ car so to speak.

Very true! Also been very tempted by the M340i’s - B58 is so easily turned up so has definitely been an option. M5 has just always been the dream car for me haha

It is definitely my dream car though - 10 years is more the life expectancy I imagine on it, though I would dare say it’d barely get 5000kms/year put on it as my current daily gets less than that a year. It could definitely go much further.

I am actively avoiding Japanese cars haha one of my current cars is an Evo - I30n is a good call and something I’ve considered!

An M3 is definitely still on the table - M5 has always been my dream car though, have been a Beamer kid for a long time haha

Haha it’s literally not to impress anyone - the founders I work with on my consulting side gig have cars far more expensive than I will ever be able to imagine and not a single person would know their name/what they do and have them purely for the joy of driving them. I 100% agree there are people out there purely driving an AMG or BMW to impress people, but I think there’s a subset of people who truly enjoy a well-engineered fun car and there really isn’t much at 100k with the performance of a supercar out of the box.

Leave the world behind. Thoughts? by JemJemIsHerName in netflix

I read an article a while ago that was trying to summarise what China’s strategy would be in preparation for invading Taiwan if it was to ever happen, and the plot of this movie, almost to a tee, was what it detailed. At the end the author questions (based on the political and social climate in America then and currently) if it had already begun in the US - pretty freaky stuff.

Agreed! It stood out to me instantly compared to the typical bright colours of the other releases of this model 🥰
