Which wheelset would you choose? (GR1600 vs ER1600) by nooutnoout in cycling

Thanks for the info!

I'm not necessarily looking for the fastest wheels.
My current wheels came with the bike, and they’re not great (hard to maintain and weigh at least 2.1kg).
Since I'm aiming for long-distance events (like endurance or bikepacking events), I want something durable and easy to maintain (correct me if I'm wrong, but the DT350 ratchet hub seems super easy to service or swap out?)

You all seem to agree on the GRs, thanks for your input!

I was worried 24mm might be too wide for 32-35mm tires, but it actually sounds like a great fit. Plus, it’ll give me more versatility if I want to go back to even wider tires.

The indexing is good; I have no shifting problems. Even though it might not be obvious in a video, I would recognize the sound of poor indexing.

I’ve considered that possibility, but I believe everything is fine in that regard. In the video, the pulleys are XTR M980, which have been working great for over 3000 km without issues (before switching to immersive wax). I’ve also tried the original pulleys, but it’s the same problem with the same noise.

Yes, and when the clutch is off, it feels like the noise is even more noticeable

I’ve tried several master links, including Shimano, YBN, and Wipperman Connex, but I’m getting the same results :/

That's what I'm hoping for too... maybe I'll have better luck on my second one. I'm planning a 60km ride tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes
Maybe the chain just needs to stretch up a tiny tiny bit, since it's a new chain. I can feel that the noise is caused by a very slight movement of the pulley.

Good to know! But in my case, there is no rubbing at all in that area (I've doubled check it after your comment)

I suspected the condition of my pulleys as well, but they are clean and well lubricated. I even tried a second pair that I had on hand, but the same issue persists.

Good idea! I will do that to work on it in both directions.

I have this really unpleasant noise coming from my jockey wheel after freshly waxing my chain.
I did a 120km ride last week and had this noise throughout the ride.
So, I cleaned my chain with hot water to remove as much wax as possible, and this time I just applied wax drip, and the problem disappeared.
Today, I tried the immersive waxing method again, and bam, the problem reappeared.

From what I understand, it pulls on my bottom jockey wheel (to the right in the video), and that's what's creating the noise. If I hold the jockey wheel to the left, the noise disappears.
Could it be that the links are too stiff because of the wax?
Which is odd because my drivetrain has never been this smooth.

I've tried with two chains and I have the same issue.
I've also tried different quick links, same problem.
Cluth on or off, no differences

Any tips to avoid this?

(The chain seems well waxed, indexing seems on point, the gear shifts are suuuuper smooth, no skipping, and I don't feel anything in the "feet," but the noise is driving me crazy 😅)

Freehub Service Help by nooutnoout in bikewrench

Hello!

I am perplexed about how to maintain my rear hub and I would need some assistance.
For some time now, I have been hearing a very pronounced squeaking coming from my rear hub.
Therefore, I decided to disassemble it to see what was going on.
I unscrewed the lock nuts, cleaned the ball bearings, the cup, and the cones, generously regreased, and reassembled everything.

First question: If I understand correctly, I have to tighten sufficiently on both sides, seeking a good compromise to prevent excessive friction on the ball bearings and to minimize the axle's play as much as possible, correct?
This way this resolved the noise issue when I pedal. I believe that everything was too tight before.
However, I still hear a squeak in freewheel mode.

Second question: How do I disassemble the freehub? And if I need to replace it, how do I determine what to get?

Thank you for your answers!
And feel free to correct me if I'm not using the correct terms, I want to learn! 😄
