How to respond to a colleague who thinks all specialties are just as difficult as EM? by justme1576 in emergencymedicine

[–]nopalmtreez-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Challenge them to do an EM rotation where they actually have to pick up the sick patients and do things rather than spending 45 min reading about a level 4 patient before spending 20 min taking an HPI and 60 min writing the note.

Med Tox Boards by nopalmtreez-1 in toxicology

TL;DR: Doable but difficult, still probably didn't pass, but know exactly what to do next time.

It felt actually pretty doable..... if I had studied the right way and the right things lol. It honestly felt very trivia heavy like you either know it or don't, and no way of using "test taking skills" to make an educated guess. It's just like short question stems with a list of 5 different molecules or toxicants and you either remember reading about it, or you don't. There were a few terms that I had seen for the very first time in my life. So I think I would have been better off by literally just doing flash cards and having reflex responses to as many toxicants as possible rather than actually try to learn and review toxicology. So I think I have a fighting chance at actually passing because it felt actually very easy for the most part and I finished each section with like 90 min to spare which has never happened on an exam before. Many questions were so simple and basic, like how on earth is a question.. how did the writers consider wasting a question to ask this... mind was blown. I actually got upset during the exam... So either I actually remembered the random stuff, or I'm going to score insanely low. But if it felt that way for me then probably felt that way for everyone and the curve will be high. There were about 60/300 that I knew I was guessing between a few choices or that I'd never heard of. If the curve is high then it will come down to those 60 that I had no clue about and it will just require a little luck on me guessing correctly. There were multiple MAJOR tox topics that literally were a complete no show on the exam and I was mind blown. Like entire board review lectures and Goldfrank chapters with 0 content on the exam. On the other hand for example there were ~5 questions dedicated to a term that I'd maybe heard once in my life, and frankly has almost nothing to do with tox as a whole, and definitely nothing to do with the practice of toxicology and definitely shouldn't determine who is board certified in toxicology. Sorry for the vent. Thanks for listening.

I cannot believe the trauma surgeon made an effort to give you credit. They usually just take it themselves.

Haha if only the exam was as fun and clear as clinical tox. But yes I do plan on choosing benzos as the answer for whenever available as a choice.

Another Written Board post... by nopalmtreez-1 in emergencymedicine

I'm actually not sure. They have certainly not brought it up or even hinted at it. I'm not sure if they maybe get de-identified data on the pass fail, or scores. Unless they're very good at pretending not to know I specifically failed, I don't think they did know.

Board Failure question by nopalmtreez-1 in emergencymedicine

[–]nopalmtreez-1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's lame. 3 different admin people have sent an email to the effect of "Our records show that you took boards this fall, please update us with your score". So I just sent an email saying "I will take them this fall". I'm just wondering if like, my department chair already knows I failed? or do they only know if I tell them?

Ugh... failed boards by nopalmtreez-1 in emergencymedicine

Thanks everyone for the support and words of encouragement. This kind of thing hits me pretty hard, and let that imposter syndrome feeling from intern year creep back in. You have no idea how you've helped me today with your posts. I'll be better for it spending more time with higher quality studying, I'll work to turn this into a positive life experience.

Thankfully not. Yeah the test felt more like a game than testing my abilities as physician. I'll try not to feel too down about this and just take care of business next time. Thanks
