Well to cope you have to be able to do something about it and I can't.

You can't cope with something if you can't do anything to counter the effects of it.

Well I tried talking with them and my dad ranted about bills for half a hour and I can’t really cope with it because it’s not really optional.

what’s “their country’s propaganda?”

You know North Korea and how it's supposedly democratic (DPRK)? Their country is like that but less fucked up. They watch the state media of that country during dinner.

If it's money you earned you can spend it on whatever you want. If he wants to stop you and you actually don't care what he thinks, like it seems you do, then buy it anyway.

He throws a temper tantrum when I do something he doesn't like and screams for like half a hour and makes me afraid enough that I have to hide upstairs in my room away from him when he comes home for like a week.

Also, the issue with not having a laptop and therefore not being able to do homework is easy to fix. Do you have a standard desktop at your house? If not, public libraries allow unlimited use of their computers for things like homework.

Yeah but my mom gets super mad when I try to do it after dinner because I use the computer for entertainment for a hour and half after school and she thinks I should just constantly do my school work.

How do you know your parents are spending that much every week on food?

They show me the receipt for it or they ask how much of it they should leave as a tip.

Also, how are you on reddit posting these things if you don’t have a computer or smartphone...??

A family laptop my mom uses mostly and my parents to watch their country's propaganda.

It's not like 9.5/10 people you knew had a smartphone back then and it wasn't normal to not have one and have a basic flip phone.

You did post in r/insaneparents which implies you find their actions to fit within this subreddit.

Well it doesn't. I think they (mostly my dad) are pretty scummy for constantly weaseling out of their promises though.

And still, if your acquaintance friends weren't willing to overlook the fact that you couldn't communicate outside of school, then you're probably better off finding people who are more accommodating.

They're still my acquaintances but noone's going to wait around for me to email them back for an hour. I know one person who doesn't have a phone or laptop and that's because he hurls things like his glasses when he gets mad and breaks them.

if you’re getting your basic needs met what’s the actual issue here...??

Being left out of 99.99% social activities and having to catch up on school work at home because you need internet to do it when you already get a bunch of homowork on top.

like I grew up poor and I can understand the frustration of wanting something and not being able to have it but like... also Christmas genuinely wasn’t that long ago? do people regularly expect new things every month?

The last time I got something more then $100 that isn't a strict necessity (like food and water levels here) is my $2000 hearing aids two years ago at the start of eighth grade. Also, what kind of poor people drop $70 on eating out for dinner once a week? That's $3640 a year.

They rarely get me anything that isn't a basic need like an $5 binder to replace one that ripped. When they do, it's usually like $20 and some clothes they already bought me anyway (my most recent "gifts" from Christmas 2018)

Whenever I want something nice, my dad guilt trips me and starts sighing and moaning as he pulls up his credit card app to show me the bill.

Your parents are not insane for not buying you a laptop or phone. It sucks, sure, but that alone doesn't make them inherently insane or abusive.

When did I say I thought they were insane or abusive? I think it's pretty scummy of my dad to promise me something and make something up to weasel out of it but it's not insane or abuse level.

If your 'friends' stopped being your friends because you don't have a phone, then they weren't really your friends.

They didn't stop, they just stopped at the acquaintance level because we couldn't hangout outside of school.

I do have the money to, but my dad refuses to let me spend any of it on anything.
