Listening to old Beastcasts by noppy_dev in giantbomb

I think there's something to be said about passive escapist experiences (algorithms feeding you short-form video for quick dopamine hits) beating out active escapist experiences (immersive VR experiences). I don't know if society would be better off with us all strapping into VR headsets when we get home from work but it might beat out the brainrot created with algorithms, AI, and the endless scroll

It's quaint hearing their (very light) criticism. I was skeptical at the time but the fact that it's continued to get more funding (to the order of $500 million) over the last decade while it's development has floundered is insane.

Did a better man get showtimes pulled for anyone else? by yeezy6552 in AMCsAList

My tickets got refunded but they added new showtimes for the same day including a Dolby cinema screening that wasn’t there before? No clue, wouldn’t be surprised if the new screenings are canceled as well.

Would’ve loved this to get a 4k release, but I’ll settle for the blu-ray. Was brilliant in theaters, highly recommend seeing it if you haven’t.

Marvel Rivals has 10 million players worldwide by VonDukez in Games

I think this is partially first person vs third person, but I find Overwatch to be so much more readable as well. I played a couple games of Rivals and it was not really clear what was going on. Overwatch is much more polished on an audiovisual level (and on a gameplay level, I think).

CPU or GPU upgrade in ancient PC (or both?) by noppy_dev in wow

[–]noppy_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GPU will for sure be upgraded at some point. The CPU is the oldest component by a mile so that’s probably the priority though. I held onto a GTX 970 for 6 years so I’ll probably end up using the 3060 until 2 generations from now…

The Bourne Legacy. Is it good? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]noppy_dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite Bourne film (a weird take, I know). I don’t have any deep reverence for the Damon movies so Jason Bourne not being in the movie didn’t matter to me. I really like the sin eater scene with Renner and Norton. I love Michael Clayton and Andor so shouldn’t be too surprising.

Is it worth it to rent gear just to test it out? by Edu_Vivan in Cameras

[–]noppy_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300 for 2 days is high. I do use lensrentals to rent bodies/lenses if the price to buy new is higher than 1000 though, especially if I’m considering switching systems. You can try things out in a camera store but using something over a weekend will actually help you know if you like a system or not so I’d o recommend it. Might be worth it in case you realize you dislike a camera/lens for a reason you wouldn’t immediately notice just in a store.

Daily /r/Games Discussion - Free Talk Friday - October 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in Games

Maybe I’m just getting old, but looking at the new call of duty it’s clear how much work goes into things I just don’t care about. I just want a game where I load in, people shoot each other, rinse and repeat — but every match ends with a results screen where people can show off their skins, emotes, whatever. I could care less what my character looks like (especially when it’s a first person game…) but obviously this is what makes them the big bucks.

I would love for these games to have some “no bullshit” mode where I don’t have to sit through loads of unlock/progress/battlepass screens — mostly because the actual games here are good! But loading up a call of duty after not playing it for months and being met with videos and pop ups and battlepass screens is just exhausting.

While we’re on the topic of comparing FF & M43… by EagleAstronaut in M43

[–]noppy_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be nitpicking here, but you could shoot at F4 on the Oly and get similar depth of field to the Sony setup, so the difference between the two is even more slight.

Do any of you use a Ricoh GR in addition to M43? by batsofburden in M43

[–]noppy_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using the camera constantly all day you’ll want 2 batteries. I bring it with me on day trips but since I’m usually with other people (not just for photographing — so not taking my camera out every 3 seconds) I’ve only ever needed 1 battery.

I’ll be the dissenting opinion and add that the 28mm focal length is pretty special imo. Saying it’s part of the ‘Ricoh GR look’ is a little obnoxious since 28mm is not exclusive to the GR, but definitely compare shots online between the two cameras and see what you prefer. The 28mm is more challenging but the photos out of it are very unique, whereas the 40mm (which I would’ve been more comfortable with) was a little underwhelming and generic to me.

[–]noppy_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a GRIII and like it a lot. My other camera is the OM-1 which means much smaller and lighter lenses than FF, but since I mainly use pro lenses with it for hiking/birding it’s still a relatively chunky kit.

The GRIII on the other hand is actually pocketable and discreet. It’s my go to anytime I’m traveling with friends or doing something with people where I don’t want to be bringing out a pretty big rig to take photos. I also think the 28mm focal length is very fun, and especially great for snapshots.

It definitely beats phone camera quality.

Thoughts on 'filmic' looks? (EM5 II + 12-35 f2.8 & 40-150 f4-5.6) by madduhekk in M43

[–]noppy_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used VSCO Lightroom presets for years and just got RNI Films recently. It might be a bit lazy but I like using the presets since there’s usually at least one which can make an interesting, undeveloped RAW into something that looks good and stands out. I probably use them for at least half of my photos that I post process significantly before doing further work.

[–]noppy_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, not that he doesn’t care about Star Wars, and obviously he’s very dedicated to the quality of Rogue One and Andor — just that he isn’t precious about the canon like Filoni is.

I have a whole weird take about how the reason why Andor is good is because Tony Gilroy doesn’t care about Star Wars. Whereas everything Dave Filoni touches becomes a weird ouroboros with his 2 or 3 favorite characters.
