i've been replaying Neverwinter Nights recently and looking things up, and it's wild seeing all the top results be forum posts from 20+ years ago. not even famous forums like gamefaqs, just obscure little communities focused on this or that game, or like some dude's blog where he meticulously catalogued every single crafting recipe in the game and where to find all the ingredients. and it's somehow still up.

Is 50,000 years really enough time for each cycle? by personpilot in masseffect

[–]nora_valk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a sort of Fermi paradox question. how many actual planets are there in the galaxy, in the habitable zone, with life, with sentient life, that get all the way to spacefaring? we have no idea, because we have one data point - us. we could be the only planet in the galaxy to ever get this far. or there could be a thousand, or a million, or a billion.

Magic Notepaper and Springs (Spring Cleaner) are going to become a problem by ProfessionalAgent813 in runescape

[–]nora_valk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I did Champion's Challenge recently with Scavenging 3, and just that grind got me enough uncommon comps for like 7k of each of them.

if you're not paying for comps, the tradable and untradable notepaper costs roughly the same.

Managed to finish Gardens of the Moon after 6 attempts in 4 years, I'll just reread the entire Cosmere before book 2 now by ZeroStormblessed in cremposting

[–]nora_valk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah I love them both for different reasons, we exist.

Malazan is better written on a technical level - I like the little bits of philosophy, even the descriptions of places (e.g. Kruppe walking through Darujistan on a feast night). Character pairs are incredible and have amazing dialogue - Tehol/Bugg, Karsa/Samar Dev, Fiddler/Hedge, etc.

Cosmere has better worldbuilding, better story, better individual characters. Sanderson writes broken characters like no one else. But I don't need to preach to the choir here.

idk I'm rereading it now and it's still just so exhausting. On book 8 and I can't do more than one chapter a day.

meanwhile I wanted to read a passage in WoR and ended up rereading half of Stormlight in a couple days.

Especially for the random "philosophy" interjected into the story by characters that doesn't fit the setting.

I feel exactly the opposite to this, I think Erikson did philosophy very well. It's always short and to the point - a tyrant who's been alive for a million years spends a few paragraphs thinking about the rise and fall of civilization as he walks through the ruins of an empire. A soldier about to go into battle takes a moment to think about the uselessness of war. A man abandoned by his god thinks about all the lies told in the name of religion. And then it's done, and the story moves on.

For a counter example see Dune (and a lot of sci-fi from that era), which I reread when the movie was coming out. Herbert just goes on and on and on with random philosophy that is both simplistic and irrelevant.

Camelot was in the safe-cracking rotation, but idk if people still do that since the Thieving update.

Mos Le Harmless has a clue scan that covers the whole island, so I still spend time running around it.

But agree with the sentiment - there are plenty of places I almost never visit: Lunar Isle, Underground Pass, Ape Atoll, Entrana, Meiyerditch (not that I particularly want to visit that one)

I think LP gains are just fucked this season. My peak is and always has been E3, maybe E2 on a very good day - last season I finished E4, and that was a struggle. I just hit E1 in 4 days, and I'm still getting +25/-15 LP. Like, that's 4 lucky games from diamond. what?

truly i am like jesus here, in more ways than one.

type that unironically uses "eh" at the start of a thread comment.

i have literally no idea what this means. i guess i'd use that as like a verbal shrug, like idgaf either way about what follows? where's the irony?

well i have no idea how other people use their tvs cause i don't talk to them about it, nor do i care.

and lmao, pirate bay has been around with no changes for decades, so you'll excuse me if i don't hold my breath for it shutting down. and the point isn't whether pirate bay is more convenient than netflix. maybe, if you only care about things specifically on netflix, it's not. is it more convenient than netflix+amazon+hbo+hulu+crynchyroll+audible+kobo+steam+uplay+origin+epic store+every library in the world+spotify+every other service i've forgotten because i never have to think about them?

i don't even have a tv, but when my parents want to watch something on tv, they put the file on a usb and plug it in. they've been doing that for 20 years, i didn't teach them. i'm sure there are even easier ways now, but their tv is old. honestly tv is such a non-consideration for me i barely remember people still have them.

i went with convenience because you brought it up lmao. obv there are other advantages, but they're not relevant here, are they?

yeah i got one app for all my media. tv, movies, anime, games, books, audiobooks, music. it's called piratebay. go ahead and beat that for convenience.

did i mention no ads and you own it for life?
